The English grammar, punctuation and spelling test assesses your child’s English skills in four key areas in Year 6: spelling punctuation grammar; and vocabulary. It forms part of the National Curriculum tests (NCTs) which are taken by pupils at the end of Key Stage 2. Why does my child have to take this test? • The Department for Education introduced the test because they want to make sure that when children leave primary school they are confident in grammar, punctuation and spelling. The test will ensure that primary schools place a stronger focus on the teaching of these skills than in previous years. • The end of Key Stage 2 is a key point of a child’s education, and we expect parents to want to know how well their child is learning the most important skills. Just as you will receive information from your child’s school about how they perform in reading and maths, you will also receive information about how they are doing in grammar, punctuation and spelling. • The test results will provide teachers with useful information about your child’s progress in each of the key areas. Most children will move to a secondary school the following term, and their new English teachers can use this information to focus their lessons on areas of need. Spelling • 20 questions. • Word read aloud • Word read aloud within a sentence • Word read aloud • Eg. Spelling one: the word is dinner. . We sat at the table to eat our dinner The word is dinner. Punctuation and Grammar • 45min test • Vocabulary Contraction eg. Can not Can’t Inverted commas eg “Hello,” he said. In Summary English SATs for 2014 • Writing- Teacher assessed throughout the year We collate writing throughout the year • Reading- Monday 12th May • ESPAG- Tuesday 13th May What are we doing in school? • Daily Grammar work • Displays • Homework/Blue work record books • Activities on Learnanywhere • Daily Literacy and Maths • Cross curricular writing and maths The Mathematic Tests • There are three tests - test A - test B - mental arithmetic • Test A and B have 40 marks each • Mental arithmetic has 20 marks • There is no CALCULATOR paper – reasons why? It’s Your Turn!! LEVEL 6 maths What is it? Who will take it? What is required? A dragon lived in a cave. The dragon doubled in size every day. After 20 days the dragon filled the cave. After how many days did the dragon half-fill the cave? Kerrie and Karen each bought identical T-shirts from the same shop. Kerrie bought hers on Monday when there was 15% off the original price. Karen bought hers when there was 20% off the original price. Kerrie paid 70p more! What was the original price? This is a good example of a level 6 question because the calculations involved are not particularly extensive yet require an ability to think clearly. The key is to recognise that the 70p represents 5% of the original price. ( 20%-15%). Once you have this you can see that, then it is a short step to find 10% of the original price £1.40. (double 5%) So the original price must be £14.00 Triangle ABC is equilateral. A B C 108º x Not to scale Calculate the size of angle x. Again, to solve this we need to apply and adapt what we know about angles. The two facts are that angles in an equilateral triangle are all 60˚ The angles in a quadrilateral add to 360˚. From here it is relatively simple to calculate angle x. 360 – (60+60+108) = 228 Teacher Assessment • Teacher assessment results are reported alongside the test results. Both have equal status and provide complementary information about a pupils attainment. • However it is usually SATs that are reported/quoted Preparing for the tests at home. • Research has shown that children who achieve Level 4 at the end of Key Stage two will gain the expected five GCSEs with grades A-C at the end of Key Stage three.
