Scoring the SWYC
SWYC 9-Month Milestones
The SWYC Milestones is a 10-item questionnaire that can be asked at 12 points along a
child’s development. This document focuses on the 9-month screening. The age range
for the 9-month Milestones screen is:

9 months, 0 days - 11 months, 31 days old
For each item, a parent can choose which of three answers best describes their child, in
which:



Not Yet= 0 points
Somewhat= 1 point
Very Much= 2 points
1. To score, add up the total number of points. Any missing items count as 0 points.
2. Determine what specific age the child is (i.e. 9 months, 10 months or 11 months)
3. Scores are in the following ranges for each age:

4. Upon scoring the screen:


If a child is in the average or above average range, highlight the milestones that
the child has reached.
If the child is below average, further investigation and referrals are
recommended for any below-average scores.
o Fill out a Health Leads referral form for Early Intervention services.
o Briefly explain that you are referring the child for further developmental
screening. Give parents the “Prescription for Early Intervention”.
