2017 Canada Summer Games Selection Criteria (Coach)
Vision:
• To identify, develop and support both athletes and coaches in the sport of Triathlon.
Mission:
• To support identified athletes to develop to their full potential in the Sport of Triathlon
• To create a supportive environment between athletes and coaches within Alberta.
Team Structure:
• One (1) Coach and one (1) Team Manager will be selected to represent Alberta and
support our athletes. If the Coach is female, the Team Manager must be a male, and
vice versa.
1. Eligibility
Any staff listed as Coach named to Team Alberta must be fully certified under the
National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) to at least NCCP Competition –
Development (Certified) status. These coaches must be certified no later than 90 days
before the opening of the Games (May 1st, 2017).
The minimum certification requirement to be considered for a coaching exemption in
Triathlon for the 2017 Canada Games is as follows: Competition-Introduction Certified, 4
of the 6 Multi-Sport Modules completed and the Making Ethical Decisions Module
completed. Coaches must also demonstrate they have experience coaching junior
athletes and the potential to enter the Competition-Development program.
As well, the Coach must meet the following eligibility requirements:
a) Prospective coaches must be members in good standing with the Alberta
Triathlon Association (ATA) at the time of qualification and must remain in good
standing until completion of the Games.
b) Prospective coaches must submit to a police information check and provide it to
the Alberta Triathlon Association along with the Statement of Interest.
c) Prospective coaches must meet the same residency and eligibility requirements
as their athletes (Section 4) as described in the Canada Summer Games
Technical Package.
d) Prospective coaches must complete a CSG Statement of Interest, indicating their
understanding of the selection process and the time commitment by December 1,
2017.
e) The CSG Coach must sign and return (to the ATA General Manager) a coach
agreement contract in order to coach in the 2017 Canada Summer Games by
June 23rd 2017.
2. Selection
Coach and Team Manager selection will be made by the ATA General Manager by
December 31, 2017.
3. Time Commitment
There are a number of mandatory meetings and training camps that the CSG Coach and
Team Manager must attend in support of the athletes seeking to qualify for CSG. The
CSG Coach will also work with the coaches who support potential and named CSG
athletes to ensure the athlete develops to their full potential and within a supportive
environment. The CSG Coach would oversee the training and tertiary supports provided
at the ATA development camps for the CSG-eligible athletes.
January 2017 – ATA Development Camp in Edmonton
February 2017 – ATA Development Camp in Calgary
February 2017 – Concussion Awareness Session (Edmonton or Calgary)
March-April 2017 – Development Camp in Victoria
May 10 or 11, 2017 – Coach/Manager/Sport Coordinator Meeting
July 8, 2017 – Team Alberta Staging – Sherwood Park
July 27 – Aug 5 – Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg
There may be additional development camps scheduled in May and June which the CSG
Coach would attend. All camps are dependent upon receiving grant funding.
