Our organization has made great strides since coming to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum where we have come to know so many nature loving friends and members. We hope that our 70th Annual Show will inspire newcomers to the joy of growing and showing dahlias and become a member of our society. A show such as ours, and our fellow conference societies, comes together by the efforts of its dedicated members who join together and devote their valuable time and hard work to make it all happen. I want to sincerely thank and recognize each individual who helped out! I’m sure we do it because we love the end result…but in fact we simply do it because we love the joy it gives to others. The main prizes are awarded Saturday afternoon so that the exhibitors from our neighboring North Atlantic States can carry them home in remembrance of the hard work and prize winning winning blooms they have grown. If this is your first experience at our show, please join us for our second show in October on the 11th & 12th. If the weather is kind, you will see many more later blooming varieties whose colors intensify during the early fall weather. .P.S. – While you are here, please visit the William Wolkoff Dahlia Display garden at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, the largest public dahlia display garden in the Northeast with over 1,000 dahlias Sincerely, Joe Laundri, Joe Bonomo and Lenny Nicolosi Show Chairmen Long Island Dahlia Society Board of Directors President ........................................................ Early meetings took place around a pot-bellied stove at Munz’s nursery in Jamaica and were often held in the fertilizer shed. Mr. Aumuller brought together the first show to the public where hundreds of milk bottles were collected and gilded so that all the blooms were resplendent in golden containers. Eventually the meetings moved to Jamaica Hall, and during the course of the last 69 years, LIDS has exhibited throughout much of Long Island. In recent years, the cooperation among the dahlia societies of the North Atlantic Dahlia Conference has led to flourishing success for dahlias. With a hard working, well intentioned membership we can only see a bright future for our society LIDS is dedicated the cultivation and propagation of the Dahlia. LIDS plants and maintains a garden of over 1000 dahlias at Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River, NY. We host 2 dahlia shows each season at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. The first show is on Labor Day Weekend and the second show is a few weeks later in early October. The LIDS holds monthly meetings in the upper level of the Carriage House at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7:00pm. Please contact us at the below address or email to request a copy of our calendar. We will provide you directions with the calendar. Membership is $20.00 per family per year. As a new member you will receive 3 free tubers or cuttings of show grade flowers (our choice) at one of our spring root auctions. The root auctions are held during April, May and June. By becoming a member, you can learn about the culture of dahlias at our monthly meetings and the methods used by our own seasoned growers and senior members. We invite you to participate in our shows, displaying dahlias or just visiting and enjoying the beauty of the flowers. Box 76 West Sayville, NY 11796 longislanddahlia.org DAHLIA FORMS General Rules XI Formal Decorative- Ray florets are flat, partially revolute, or partially involute floret edges. The petals are uniform and regularly arranged, tending to curve toward the stem. First, second and third awards will be made in each class (except seedlings). No award will be made in any class if entry is unworthy. Tri-colors are awarded as noted in the schedule. Judges should check length of the stems especially in close or tri-color decisions. XII Informal Decorative- Ray florets are twisted, or curled, or wavy creating an affect that the petals are not flat. The florets may be partially revolute with their arrangement appearing irregular. The best entries in the nine classes of Other Type dahlias in both 1 and 3 bloom sections will receive Tri-Color ribbons and awards. XIII The decision of the judges will be final. No appeals will be considered except in cases where the entry is in the wrong class. In this case the Show Committee may consider the appeal and act as they see fit. XIV We shall not be held responsible for loss or damage to exhibits or personal property, but will exercise the utmost care to protect exhibits. Baskets and vases should be labeled with the exhibitors name and address for proper return. XV The Show Committee reserves the right to make additional rules, classes, or to change the schedule as it becomes necessary, or to remove from the tables before or after judging any exhibit it considers in poor condition. XVI All entries except exhibitor’s baskets become the property of the Show Committee, to be disposed of at their own discretion at the close of the show. Dahlias are classified by form, color and size. These are the 19 classification forms recognized by the American Dahlia Society. Semi-Cactus- The ray florets are broad at the base, straight, incurved or recurved and the ray florets revolute for up to one half of their length. Straight Cactus – The ray florets revolute for more than one half of their Length; they also may be pointed, straight, or recurved, radiating in all directions from the center of the flower head. Incurved Cactus- These dahlias also have ray florets that are curved for more than one half of the length but the pointed petals have a pronounced curvature toward the center of the flower head. Laciniated -The split or laciniation should be in proportion to the ray floret length. There should be an overall twisting in the area of the split involute or revolute ray florets, to give an overall fringed effect. Ball-Fully double flowers, ball shaped or slightly flattened at the face, and the ray florets are blunt, rounded, or indented, involute for most of their length, fully involute for about one half their length, and normally displayed in a spiral arrangement. Miniature Ball- Same form as ball dahlia, differing only in size. Pompon-Fully double flowers similar to ball dahlias but more globular and smaller in size; also, the ray florets involute for their whole length and fully involute for more than half of their length. Stellar-Fully double, breaking gradually from immature florets to fully developed outer florets. The outer florets should be narrow and involute with a slight recurve to the stem. The less mature florets should possess the same narrow and partially involute characteristic. The depth of the stellar dahlia type should be from one half to two thirds the diameter of the bloom, the greater depth being the ideal. XVII Judges may not participate in decisions involving their own interests or entries. In the event a substitute judge is required, that judge must sign the appropriate sheet. XVIII Dahlia foliage is preferred in both baskets and vase classes. Other foliage is permitted but should not overpower the dahlias. General Rules I. Latest classification list of the American Dahlia Society is to be used, with exhibits entered accordingly, not classified entries to be entered as they appear. II. Show is open to all exhibitors. No entry fee to be charged, exhibitors must sign register book. III. Suitable containers supplied for all classes . IV. There will be no restrictions as to the number of blooms entered from one garden in any class. V. Entries must be correctly labeled with cultivar name. Incorrectly named entries will be disqualified. Unnamed seedlings must have growers ID. Past trophy winning seedlings cannot be entered in the future as a seedling. VI. VII. Exhibitor’s name must be concealed, all entries remained sealed until Tri-Color and further awards are chosen. Failure to observe this rule will disqualify entry. All entries to be grown by exhibitor. Waterlily-Fully double and symmetrical blooms with a side view that appears to be flat or saucer shaped. The ray florets are openly faced giving the bloom a delicate appearance. The center is closed and dome shaped breaking gradually to four to seven rows of fully developed outer ray florets which are also broad and slightly cupped. Peony-An open centered dahlia with two or more rows of ray florets surrounding the disc flowers (small tubular florets which make up the central part of the flower. Each has a pistil and stamens but generally no other conspicuous flower parts). Ray florets adjacent to the disc flowers may be smaller, twisted, and/or curled. Anemone-Dahlias with one or more rows of ray florets surrounding a center of elongated tubular disc florets. These disc florets should be fully developed and present a domed, pincushion appearance. Collarette-An opened faced dahlia with a single row of uniform evenly spaced compound ray florets in a flat plain surrounding the disc flowers. The petaloids that surround the disc are less than 1/2 the length of the ray florets. Single-An open faced dahlia with a single row of uniform evenly spaced ray florets in a flat plain surrounding the disc flowers. Mignon Single-Same as single, differing only in size. VIII. No other flowers permitted, all materials used to support stems must be removed before judging, or entry will be disqualified. Two sets of leaves are preferred on all entries, excluding Pompons & AOTs, which require a single set of leaves. IX. Judging begins promptly at 11:00 A.M.; all entries must be in place at that time. X. Only judges, clerks, and committee people are permitted on the floor during judging. No exhibit shall be removed from the hall without the Show Committee’s Consent Orchid-An open centered dahlia with a single row of evenly spaced ray florets in a flat plain surrounding the disc flowers. The ray florets are involute for 2/3s or more of their length and fully involute for at least 1/3 of their length. Orchette-Has 8 ray florets uniformly surrounding the disc flowers as in the typical Orchid manner. Florets must be straight and involute, becoming fully involute for, at least, one quarter of the floret with a petaloid at each base Novelty Open-Dahlias with characteristics differing from the present classifications. These dahlias will have a disc center. Novelty Fully Double-Dahlias with characteristics differing from the present classifications. These varieties will have a fully double center. Judges should use the form definition listed in the 2014 ADS Classification Book.
