Tonight’s starter #1 Scott Carroll
The Kansas City T-Bones signed former Major League pitcher Scott Carroll to a contract
for the 2017 season on May 10. Carroll, 32 (09-24-84), is a 6-foot-4, 215-pound righthanded pitcher and a local product from Liberty, MO. He split time last season with the
Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers organizations, including three games at the Major
League level with Chicago. He posted an 0-0 record with a 11.57 ERA in 2 1/3 innings with
the White Sox but saw most of his action at AAA Charlotte in the International League. The
right-hander worked in 60 innings with a 5.55 ERA, going 2-8 in 16 games (12 starts) at
AAA. Chicago outrighted Carroll to Charlotte on July 14, 2016 and then traded him to the
Texas Rangers on the 20 of the month, where he would go on to make two stops in the
Rangers organization. He went 2-1 with a 2.92 ERA in seven starts at AA Frisco in 37
frames and was 0-1 at AAA Round Rock in a pair of games with a 10.00 ERA in nine
innings. Carroll started his professional career in the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2007
after being selected in the third round of the 2007 June draft out of Missouri State
University. He reached AAA Louisville with the Reds in 2012 before being released in July
of that season, but would ink with the White Sox three days later. Carroll picked up the win
in his Big League debut, tossing 7 1/3 innings of one run ball in a 9-2 Sox win over Tampa
Bay on April 27, 2014. He would appear in a total of 47 contests for the White Sox over
three seasons, going 6-11 with a 4.60 ERA in 168 1/3 innings and adding 93 strike outs.
Carroll is a native of Liberty, Mo where he was a multi-sport star for Liberty High School,
including being named one of the top-rated quarterbacks in Missouri and earning a
scholarship to Purdue University. Carroll would spend one year with the Boilermakers
before he transferred to Missouri State where he played baseball and football for the Bears.
Last Time out- Went seven innings in 6-2 W at Sioux City (4H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 10SO)

T-Bones Take Over 1st Place With 5-Run 1st Inning
July 5, 2017
Kansas City 6 Sioux Falls 5
Kansas City, Kan. — The Kansas City T-Bones beat the Sioux Falls Canaries, 6-5, taking over the lead in the Central Division on
Wednesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The Canaries got things rolling early on a warm and humid Wednesday night when designated hitter, Burt Reynolds, launched his
seventh home run of the season to left field giving Sioux Falls a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Kansas City quickly responded with a five run first inning beginning with the T-Bones’ most recent signee, designated hitter, Tyler
Horan’s single to bring in center fielder, Ross Kivett, evening the score at 1-1.
Third baseman, Jordan Edgerton, immediately followed adding his own RBI single giving the T-Bones a two run lead in the bottom of
the first. The Canaries’ deficit continued to grow throughout the inning with three more runs from the T-Bones. Shortstop, Jerome
Pena, singled to right field to bring in one run followed by catcher, Leo Rojas’s two-run double extending the T-Bones lead to 5-1 in
the bottom of the first.
Sioux Falls began working toward a comeback in the third inning with an RBI single by left fielder, Ty Morrison, to cut the the TBones’ lead to three. Right-handed pitcher, Chris Perry (1-2, 4.91), assisted the comeback effort by walking in a run with the bases
loaded cutting the Canaries deficit to 5-3.
After a successful first inning, the T-Bones couldn’t respond to the Canaries’ offense. Reynolds’ putout put Sioux Falls within one run
in the fourth inning.
American Association home run leader and Canaries’ first baseman, Chris Jacobs, launched his 14th home run of the season to tie the
game up at five in the fifth inning.
Five scoreless innings later, the T-Bones were able to regain a 6-5 lead with an RBI single to left field by Pena scoring left fielder,
Kyle Petty.
The T-Bones were able to secure the 6-5 win with Pena’s single, winning their their third straight series and taking sole possession of
first place in the Central Division.
Right-handed pitcher, Myles Smith (2-2, 4.50), tossed the win for the T-Bones, while left-handed pitcher, Bo Hellquist (0-1, 5.40),
suffered the loss for Sioux Falls. Kansas City’s right-handed pitcher, Cody Winiarski (1-0, 2.31), secured his 10th save of the season.
The T-Bones (26-18) will begin a four game series with the Sioux City Explorers to finish off their seven game homestand tomorrow
night at 7:05 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark with right-handed pitcher and American Association All-Star, Scott Carroll (4-2,
3.00), taking the mound.
News & Notes
“Steak Bites”
Catching up with the T-Bones
The T-Bones welcome their Central Division bunk mates the Sioux City Explores to town in the second series of the
seven-game home stand and coming off taking two of three in the just wrapped series against Sioux Falls. The week
began with a five-game winning streak and when the dust settled the T-Bones would be a season high eight games above
.500 and a hold a game lead in the division alone in first. On the last road trip, the T-Bones bounced back from a tough
opening night walk off loss at Lincoln, where the ball never left the infield, to win the second game against “Salties” ace
Carlos Pimentel going away with a pair of five run innings 12-4. Kansas City then used a huge relief effort to take the
finale Thursday 4-3. Off to the “Sioux Land” and a three-game sweep of Sioux City before the bus pulled back in to
Kansas City.
Manager Joe Calfapietra and VP/GM Chris Browne have reshaped the club offensively with the addition of infielder
Jerome Pena, outfielder Ross Kivett and outfielder Tyler Horan to the active roster. Pena, who played in Sioux Falls in
2016 was playing this season in Mexico and delivered the game winning RBI Wednesday night in the seventh on a single
off the wall in left. Kivett comes from the Tigers organization and played college ball at Kansas State while Horan comes
to Kansas City from AA Richmond from the Giants system. Kyle Petty out of the Seattle Mariners organization was
added last homestand looking to provide some added pop and protection for Kevin Keyes and Chantz Mack. He got the
game winning RBI to close out the last home stand and had a grand slam last week at Lincoln. Mack was added out of the
Seattle system as well in early June. The team added former Laredo ace Matt Sergey who was placed immediately into
the rotation and paid instant dividends with a win. Sergey was dynamic two years ago in the playoffs when Laredo won
the crown. He has gone 2-0 for Kansas City in the rotation thus far. Sergey joins veteran ace Scott Carroll from Liberty,
Missouri and Chris Perry as a potentially top of the line 1-2-3 punch.
The rest of the staff consists of eight pitchers currently with Calvin Drummond and Gabe Perez rounding out the
rotation. Drummond had tossed three out of five quality starts and Perez is top 15 in strike outs in the AA. Cody
Winiarski has grabbed the late inning high leverage role, while Grant Sides has moved into the setup role. Winiarski has
saved nine games in nine tries. Myles Smith, Luis Paula and Rich Mascheri are also on deck to help the pen. The relief
staff has not allowed an earned run on the current winning streak. Kansas City also added rookie Zach Morgenstern for
depth as well out of Augustana College. There is plenty of AAA and AA experience to go around and not to be forgotten
the Big League resume of Carroll. The team is waiting on the return of Jeff Walters and he could be used in the rotation
or at the back end of the pen once he is healthy.
Four position players have AAA experience for Kansas City in Patrick Brady, outfielder Marcus Lemon and first
baseman/DH Kevin Keyes. Joe Jackson played at AA in the Texas League last season for the Rangers. Keyes is tied for
the league lead in homers. Lemon has been red hot since June 14th with his average climbing from .240 to .323. Lemon
comes in after having a 7-for-14 series in Lincoln and was just named player of the week going 14-for-26 for the week.
The roster includes three players, who played for new manager Joe Calfapietra at some point with New Jersey in the
CAN/AM League; the already mentioned Gabe Perez and new catcher Tony Caldwell and infielder Eddie Newton.
Keyes, Carroll selected to All-Star team
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The American Association announced Wednesday that infielder Kevin Keyes and righthanded pitcher Scott Carroll will represent the Kansas City T-Bones on the American Association All-Star Team July 25
in Ottawa, when the American Association All-Stars take on the Can-Am League All-Stars.
“Both of the guys are fabulous teammates and are having great years for us. I am proud of both of them being named to
the All-Star team and they are both well deserved honors,” said Manager Joe Calfapietra.
Kevin Keyes was named as the starting first baseman for the American Association and currently is second in the league
in home runs with 12 and ranks third in RBIs. The former University of Texas standout has scored 31 team leading runs
while playing first base and designated hitter for Kansas City.
Keyes was the Washington Nationals 7th round pick in the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft and spent seven seasons in the
Nationals organization reaching AAA before joining Kansas City this season. Keyes is a native of Pflugerville, Texas and
appeared in MLB Spring Training games in 2012 and 2015.
Scott Carroll, a native of Liberty, Missouri has tossed five straight quality starts for Kansas City and is 4-2 on the season
with a 3.00 ERA. He has struck out 40 in 51 innings this year for the T-Bones and is fresh off a July 1st start, where he
struck out 10 in seven innings, in a 6-2 win at Sioux City.
Carroll is a former Major League pitcher, who split time last season with the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers
organizations, including three games at the Major League level with Chicago. Carroll started his professional career in the
Cincinnati Reds organization in 2007 after being selected in the third round of the 2007 June draft out of Missouri State
University.
Carroll picked up the win in his Big League debut, tossing 7 1/3 innings of one run ball in a 9-2 Sox win over Tampa Bay
on April 27, 2014. He would appear in a total of 47 contests for the White Sox over three seasons, going 6-11 with a 4.60
ERA in 168 1/3 innings and adding 93 strike outs.
Carroll was a multi-sport star for Liberty High School, including being named one of the top-rated quarterbacks in
Missouri and earning a scholarship to Purdue University. Carroll would spend one year with the Boilermakers before he
transferred to Missouri State where he played baseball and football for the Bears.
“I am thrilled for our players and fans. Credit needs to go to Joe Calfapietra and his staff as well. This is very rewarding as
an organization,” said T-Bones Vice-President and General Manager.
The All-Star starting position players and designated hitter were voted upon by the league’s field managers, while AllStar manager Rick Forney of Winnipeg, selected the pitchers and reserves. A full list of the American Association’s
All-Stars can be found at http://www.americanassociationbaseball.com/american-association-all-stars-announced/.
The 2017 All-Star Game will be played in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada at RCGT Park, the home of the Can-Am League’s
Ottawa Champions. Game time is set for 6:05 pm CST.

Swing and a miss
The T-Bones staff leads the AA in strike outs with 412 through 44 games. The season record in the AA is 782 by Wichita
in 13. At the moment, the team is on pace to pass that mark. The club record is 682 set in 2012. Currently the team is
averaging 9.4 strike outs per game this season. Jonathan Krysa, with 139 K’s in 2004 is the single season record holder
and he has the three highest totals for a single season. Chris Perry leads the club with 50 with Gabe Perez at 45. Scott
Carroll now has 41 for the top three on the club. It will be worth watching to see any other T-Bone can reach Krysa like
numbers while the team is on track break the league mark.
.500 Journey
Kanas City sits currently a season high eight games above the .500 mark. The T-Bones were 7-7 on June 1st last season
the latest the club was at .500 in 2016. In 2015 the club reached the .500 mark on the second to the last day of the season
on September 6th. The team would drop the season finale to go back to a game below that year. That followed reaching
the mark at 12-12 on June 29th. after starting out 1-10 in 2015. In 2014 the club was 30-30 on July 18th and never reached
.500 again and was 1-1 to start 2013 the last point the team was at. 500 that season. This year the team reached it at 7-7 at
Sioux Falls on June 2nd and have stayed at or above now since (26 games). The last T-Bone club to have that long run of
success above the .500 mark was the 2012 season where the team was at or above .500 for 66 games from June 22nd until
the end of the season.
The turn around
The T-Bones sit at 26-18 going into game 44 and eight games above .500. Last year the T-Bones were 19-25 at this point
in the season a 14-game swing.

collegiate season. He was one of three Hokies to start all 62 games in 2013 and led the team with 30 multi-hit games.
Prior to attending Virginia Tech, Horan helped lead Boston College High School to a second consecutive state
championship, while batting .407.
Meet #12 Leo Rojas
Leo Rojas was signed by the Kansas City T-Bones on March 23, 2017. Rojas was
drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 2012 MLB draft from Miami-Dade
College, Kendall Campus in Miami, Florida. The catcher spent time with three
different organizations prior to being picked up by Kansas City. Rojas’ rookie season
with the AZL Giants in the Arizona League posted a .250 batting average, while
contributing nine RBIs and 11 hits. The 2013 season would be the first of three stops
with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in the Northwest League. Rojas batted .306 with
seven doubles and one home run on the season. The South Atlantic League was the
next stop for Rojas as he joined the Augusta GreenJackets for just over a month in the
2014 season, where he had 19 hits and posted a .264 batting average. Rojas returned
to the Salem-Keizer organization for the remainder of the 2014 season. To end the
year, Rojas had seven hits with a .206 batting average, while contributing two doubles
and three RBIs before taking a break during the 2015 season. Upon his return to the
diamond, Rojas made his third trip to Salem, Oregon to rejoin the Volcanoes
organization for the 2016 season. Rojas made two top ten ranks on the Salem-Keizer
roster coming in at eighth with three home runs and tenth with 20 RBIs, while batting
.213 on the season. After spending much of his career in the Northwest League, Rojas
moved on to the American Association when he was signed by the T-Bones in 2017.
Rojas has contributed 24 hits with five home runs and 15 RBIs thus far on the season. A batting average of .267 puts
Rojas sixth on the team throughout the 41 games played thus far in the season. The Punto Fijo, Venezuela native played
for Miami-Dade College with T-Bones outfielder, Omar Garcia, upon coming to the United States.

Meet the “Man on the top step”
On November 30, 2016, Joe Calfapietra was named the T-Bones sixth manager
in the club’s history. Calfapietra (pronounced Cal-fa-pee-eh-tra), 46, brings City
an overall record of 848-740 to Kansas City in 17 seasons as a manager, all at
the independent level. He spent the past 14 seasons as the manager of the New
Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League. Only four of those 14 teams did not reach
the postseason. The Jackals won the league championship in 2004, at the end of
Calfapietra’s second season in New Jersey, and then his teams reached the
league championship series in five consecutive seasons, 2011-15. In 2016, the
Jackals went 62-38, before losing in the first round of the Can-Am playoffs.
The T-Bones and Calfapietra’s Jackals faced each other seven times in
interleague play since 2012, with New Jersey winning four of those games.
Calfapietra started his coaching career in 1994 in this organization, when the TBones were in Duluth, Minn., and were known as the Dukes. In 2002,
Calfapietra was the first-ever manager of the Gary SouthShore RailCats, where
he was the league manager of the year, before starting with New Jersey the following season. Calfapietra lives
in Collegeville, Pa., with his wife and their two daughters, ages 17 and 11. Calfapietra is the T-Bones’ sixth
manager since the team moved from Duluth prior to the 2003 season. He replaces John Massarelli, who went
139-160 in three seasons with Kansas City, including 42-58 in 2016.

Mitchell Shuts Down Wingnuts in 1-0 Gem
Matt Mitchell (2-2) surrendered just four hits to the Wichita Wingnuts (27-24) on Wednesday night at
Lawrence-Dumont Stadium as the right-hander led the Kansas City T-Bones (21-29) to a 1-0 victory with a
complete-game masterpiece.
Mitchell allowed just seven base runners in his first career shutout, and only two runners advanced to second in
the contest. The former Royals prospect retired his final seven batters of the game, including back-to-back
strikeouts to cap the effort.
The lone run of the contest came in the top of the first inning when Keanon Simon singled off Jared Bradford
(0-1) with one out and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kala Ka’aihue. Kansas City outhit Wichita 10-4 in the
game.
Bradford suffered the loss in his Wingnuts debut after allowing one run on seven hits in four innings of work.
Mitchell threw 113 pitches in his outing, 72 for strikes, as he struck out four while walking two. The completegame shutout is just the ninth in T-Bones history, and the first since Cody McAllister blanked the Schaumburg
Flyers 6-0 on June 30, 2010.
