Rusty is 5 years old. He goes to kindergarten at the
school down the street form his house. Rusty loves
school. He has lots of friends, and he has a nice teacher
named Mr. Roberts. Rusty likes Mr. Roberts and always
tries to listen to him and follow his directions.
One day when Rusty arrived at school, he was surprised
to see a new kid in his class. Rusty was curious about
this new kid in his class. At circle time, Mr. Roberts
introduced their new classmate.
“Boys and girls, I would like for you to meet Ruby. She is
joining our class today. Ruby just moved to our town
from the city. Please be kind to her and show her around
the classroom.”

Now, Rusty always liked to do what Mr. Roberts asked. So,
when the class was outside, Fusty went up to Ruby and
introduced himself.
“Hi, I’m glad that you’re in our class. Would you like to build a
sandcastle with me?”
After they had been playing for a few minutes, Rusty’s friend
Ralph came over.
“Come on Rusty,” said Ralph. “It’s time for our game.” Ralph
liked playing with Rusty and did not like for Ruby to play with
Rusty.
“Ralph, I am playing with Ruby right now. I don’t want to play
your game. I’ll play it tomorrow,” said Rusty. Rusty still liked
Ralph; he just wanted to play with his new friend.
“Well, if you won’t come play my game, then I am not your
friend,” said Ralph. Ralph was mad that Rusty wasn’t going to
play his game, so, he ran up and hit him on the arm.
Rusty was very surprised. “Ow!” He exclaimed, holding his arm.
Rusty jumped up and was getting ready to run after Ralph, who
had run away.

Mr. Roberts heard Rusty’s cry and came over to see what was
going on.
“What happened Rusty?” asked Mr. Roberts.
“Ralph just punched me in the arm, and I am going to punch him
back,” Rusty answered.
“Hmmm,” Mr. Roberts said. “Tell me what happened.”
Ruby explained: “Rusty asked me to play, and then Ralph came
over and wanted Rusty to play with him. When Rusty said no
Ralph hit him.”
“Well, I see,” said the teacher. “Rusty, how do you think Ralph felt
when you told him you weren’t going to play with him?”
“I don’t know,” said Rusty.
“Well how would you feel if Ralph said he didn’t want to play with
you?”
“Sad, I guess,” muttered Rusty.
“Instead of hitting Ralph, why don’t you think about what would
make him feel better?” suggested Mr. Roberts.
“Well I guess I could ask Ralph to play with us. And I could
apologized for hurting his feelings,” offered Rusty.
“That’s a good idea,” said the teacher. “Look. Ralph is over by the
tree.”

“Ruby,” said Rusty, “Will you come with me to talk to
Ralph?”
“O.K,” said Ruby.
So they went over to talk to Ralph. Ralph was afraid that
Rusty would be mad at him. He was surprised when
Rusty and Ruby apologized for hurting his feelings and
invited Ralph to play with them.
Ralph apologized for hitting Rusty, and the three went
back to the sandbox to play together.
They had a good time playing together.
