WRAP
WRAP, (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) is a self-management tool to help people have more control over
their recovery and to help stay well. It was developed by Mary Ellen Copeland along with a group of
others who had experienced mental health problems, and is used worldwide.
WRAP is based on the 5 Key Concepts of Recovery;
HOPE,
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY,
EDUCATION,
SELF ADVOCACY
SUPPORT
Our own WRAP, which is personal to us, helps us learn more about ourselves to identify what makes us
feel uncomfortable or unwell and then what we can do to improve our situation and to stay well. A WRAP
is developed over a period of time, which is different for everyone. We can use it every day, especially
when things are difficult and can make changes to it as our situation changes. By creating our WRAP, we
develop a way of having more control over managing the times when we are ill and our wellbeing at other
times.
Medication training for support workers
The training will ensure that support workers are able to safely support service users to take their medications as
prescribed to them.
Participants will gain an understanding of the general and practical aspects of safe medicine handling regardless of
the social care setting.
The training will ensure that support workers have a basic understanding of the different types of medication and
the reasons that they are prescribed.
Participants will have the appropriate knowledge required to support service users to manage their prescriptions –
including ordering and collecting of their medication and returning medication to Pharmacy.
Participants will understand the importance of adhering to and understanding Birchwood Highland’s organisational
policies.
Adult Support and Protection
The Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 came into force in October 2008 to ensure that
adults are kept safe from harm or abuse. The legislation places a duty upon Local Authorities (Councils),
NHS Boards, the Police and others to work together to protect adults at risk of harm. Following a process
of integrating Health and Social Care in Highland, NHS Highland is responsible for discharging
responsibilities on behalf of the Highland Council. This includes the powers to make inquiries and take
action when it is suspected that an adult may be at risk of physical or psychological harm, neglect or sexual
abuse, or being taken advantage of financially. It is important to recognise that any intervention under the
Act must benefit the adult at risk and be the least restrictive option. In Highland, a Safer Highland
Partnership has oversight of a range of public protection activities. These include Adult Support and
Protection, Child Protection, drugs and alcohol, violence against women, MAPPA and youth justice
The Highland Inter-Agency Adult Support and Protection Committee has a responsibility to raise public
awareness of the need to support and protect adults from harm, neglect or abuse.
The following training courses are mandatory which all staff require to attend. These courses will be
refreshed every 3 years.
