With the semi-finals of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada fast
approaching, FRANCE 24 takes a look at the four teams competing for a shot at
the trophy.

The United States will take on Germany in Montreal on Tuesday night in what has
been set up as a clash of the titans.
•
Between them, the two teams have won four out of the six Women’s World Cups
played since the competition first began in 1991.
•
Although the match is too close to call, it looks as though the United States are going
in as slight underdogs. Germany, who are the top-ranked team in the world, put in a
strong performance during the first round, finishing first in Group B with impressive
wins over Ivory Coast (10-0) and Thailand (4-0) and a 1-1 draw with Norway.

The team then coasted to an easy 4-1 victory over Sweden in the final 16, before
prevailing 5-4 on penalty kicks over a determined French side in the quarters.

Overall, Germany have scored 20 goals during the competition – more than
any other team.
•
The US, on the other hand, had to work a little harder to make it to the semifinals. The team quickly rose to the top of Group D, also known as the Group of
Death, after defeating Australia 3-1, but then went on to draw 0-0 against
Sweden, before eking out a 1-0 win over Nigeria.
•
In what was largely described as a lacklustre match, the US beat Colombia 2-0
in the final 16 to advance to the quarterfinals where they managed a 1-0 win
over China.

But while the US can’t compete with Germany in terms of goals scored, their
defence has proven their main strength – marking up four straight shutouts.

"It's just going to be a great matchup. This is what this tournament's all about,"
US defender Ali Krieger said. "This is why we train our entire lives, and what we
train our entire lives for. These are the moments. And we're all so excited to
play."
