Mathematics
Listen to stories with increasing attention and recall,
anticipating key events and respond with relevant
comments, questions and actions. Explore new words –
Jungle, rainforest, canopy, artic, desert, ice, freeze, melt.
Follow a set of instructions.
Ask and Answer How and Why questions related to
Faraway lands and the different animals and climates.
Make up animal jokes and silly rhymes. Describe an animal
character and aspects of different environments e.g.
ice/snow, snow and rocks. Hot seat: Ask the explorer
questions
Use language to recreate role – play: Travel Agents
,Explorers Hide.
Recite number names in sequence to 20 and beyond. Count objects to
10 and beyond. Recognise numerals 0 -10 and order them . (penguins)
Know that a group of objects change when some are added or taken
away.(polar bears) Match numerals and quantity. Compare two groups
saying when they have the same.(monkeys & parrots) Separate a group
of objects in different ways recognising the total is still the same.
(snakes) Estimate, count and check.(ants) Find 1 more, 1 less 5 to 10
objects, say 1 more than a given number. Find the total in 2 groups by
counting them. Camels, scorpions) Use vocabulary involved in adding
and subtracting. Record using marks they can explain. In practical
situations use addition & subtraction to solve problems – doubling,
halving & sharing.
SSM Ordering 2 or 3 items by length or height –(giraffe, polar bear,
ant). Using language related to time (daily routine). Sequence familiar
events. Begin to use money. Measure short periods of time – sand
timer for dressing etc. Re visit 2D & 3D shapes.

To hear and say initial sounds in words.
To seg/blend simple words . Practice cursive letter formation.
Make a Passport, write postcards.
To write own name. To label & write captions for different
animals. Attempt to write a short sentence using phonic
knowledge. To write words that match spoken sound. To write
some irregular common words. List of clothes to pack for
different climates. Rules for explorer/healthy living. Sharing
books, reading from left to right. Listen to stories & join in with
repeated refrains – suggest how the story might end. Listen to
poems about animals that rhyme. Continue a rhyming string.
Discuss the different characters in stories & describe them.
Sequence stories –How does the story begin? Openings – Where is
the story set? Settings. Obtain information regarding different
animals and countries from books (non-fiction) and computer.
Physical Development
P.E. Apparatus- considers safety & manage risks.
Gym, Floor work. Games –Val Sabin balls, hoops, bean bags.
Dressing/undressing, using scissors, tracing, threading,
lacing, small pegs. Peddling vehicles
Making patterns with water – squeeze bottle to make
numbers and letters.
Use different construction materials to make homes for
people and animals in different climates e.g. igloos.
Use den making kits to make shelters for explorers.
Plan a healthy meal for an explorer. Rules for an explorer
to stay healthy – exercise, eating, sleeping and hygiene.
Understanding the world as well:
Make ice, What makes it melt? Why? Compare clothes we
wear in in warm and cold climates.

sand timer when it’s your turn.

Understanding the world
Changes in Winter: likes, dislikes, animals and their habitats –
growth decay & change. Helping birds in Winter.
Talk about home and significant personal events – Tell me about
your Christmas, How did you celebrate? – Christian & Muslim
religions. People who live in different countries , rainforest,
desert, Inuit's. What do they eat? Where do they live? What
jobs do they do? Compare with own environment, where do you
live? What jobs do people in your family do?
Use cameras and ICT to record the hides and homes we have
constructed. Use computers to find out information about
different countries.
Expressive Arts and Design
Use different textures to create a Winter collage link to
food for birds. (U the W).
Design a plate of healthy food for an explorer.
Use collage materials to make artic animals.
Construct papier-mâché igloos and paint them.
Explore textures by making a jungle vine and canopy.
Listen to sounds found in the Rainforest and use
instruments to make music and perform a dance.
Explore how colour changes by painting symmetrical
butterflies. Make clay animals.
Learn songs and rhymes about animals
Sand art to make desert creatures.
Use Role play to experience a jungle hide and travel
