Agents Frequently Asked Questions

Agents Frequently Asked Questions
What agents need to know…
HAP will maintain the former HealthPlus Flint location to serve our expanded sales and service area. We
remain committed to improving community health and wellness throughout all of our service areas, as
well as reinvesting dollars back into Michigan.
Beginning January 1, 2017, the HealthPlus name will be phased out and health benefits will be provided
by Health Alliance Plan (HAP). As a combined company, HAP is excited to deliver to our 675,000
members an even bigger provider network, comprehensive benefits and value-added services and
programs.
Our top priority is to deliver seamless, outstanding customer service. HAP is committed to transparency
and will provide timely updates on news impacting agents and product sales.

Members can expect to have the same access to their respective high-quality provider networks,
benefits and services throughout the year.

Transition plans are underway to address new-business processes, renewals, Medicare, new
individual and qualified health plans.

HAP teams will roll out the new service area maps by product line to agents when we receive
final regulatory approval.

Existing HealthPlus policies will continue to be paid at the HealthPlus commission rate. HAP
policies will be paid according to the HAP commission schedules. For a copy of our commission
schedules, please contact Gina Theisen at [email protected] or 248-443-8505.

Employer groups are transitioning to HAP’s operating system upon renewal and HAP’s
commission schedules will apply.

Agents will not be able to combine HealthPlus and HAP memberships or sales volumes to qualify
for bonuses at this time. Upon transition to a HAP product at renewal, (HealthPlus members who
have transitioned to HAP) premiums and production will count toward HAP’s bonus programs.

All new large and small group business is quoted, enrolled and administered by HAP.

Commercial Renewals: To make the transition as smooth as possible, there will be no changes,
unless requested, to HealthPlus and HAP benefit packages until HealthPlus groups are
transitioned to HAP on their next renewal. Large groups (51+ FTEs) will be transferred at their
next scheduled renewal time to ensure that the member experience will be uninterrupted when
the new plan year starts in a new system. HAP standard commissions will apply after the group
has renewed and transitioned to HAP’s operating system.

Medicare: Both HealthPlus and HAP will continue to enroll individuals in their respective Medicare
Advantage plans in 2016.

HealthPlus individual plans are only available for 2016 Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs).
Are you interested in quoting and selling HAP products? You need to be contracted and appointed
with HAP. Please contact Gina Theisen, agent coordinator, at [email protected] or 248-443-8505 with
questions regarding your appointment status or to request a HAP contracting packet.
What changes can we expect regarding agent commission payment arrangements?
Effective 2/1/2016, in order to sell products and receive commissions, all agents must be appointed
through HAP. All agent commission payments will be paid by HAP. If you have questions regarding a
current HealthPlus group, individual or Medicare commission amount, please contact Adanma Nkume,
agent relations, at [email protected].
Will our sales agreements change?
For 2016, HAP and HealthPlus will maintain their separate agent sales agreements. However, when large
HealthPlus groups renew with HAP, they will be placed on the HAP operating system and standard HAP
commissions will apply. We’re reaching out to all of our agent partners regarding HAP contracts. Be
assured the sales teams are working on new arrangements that recognize the important role agents play
in our success. Our commitment is to keep you updated as these important decisions are made.
Will my customers have any changes to their coverage as a result of the merger?
Customers will transition to HAP plans as they renew. In the meantime, for members and customers with
existing effective plans and benefits, there will be no change. Going forward, we will offer a broader set of
products from the combined organization that may vary from their existing plan but designed to best meet
their needs.
What products will be available to sell?
You can sell the full suite of HAP products, which includes an impressive array of plans for individuals,
groups, Medicare, and Medicaid, with self-funded options available. HAP offers PPO, HMO, HSA, HRA
and EPO plans. HAP individual plans are available on the Health Insurance Marketplace. HealthPlus
individual plans are only available for 2016 Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs).
When will we be able to sell HAP products in new service areas/counties?
We have been able to sell small and large group business in the new service areas since June 1, 2016.
Jackson is the newest in our expanded service area. Agents may quote and sell large group business
effective immediately. QHP products will be available to quote for January 2017 sales after September 1,
2016. Agents can market the 2017 HAP Medicare Advantage plans, beginning on October 1, 2016. The
Medicare Annual Enrollment Period is October 15- December 7, 2016.
I work with both HealthPlus and HAP, whose product am I selling in 2016?
Members and groups will transition to HAP as they renew. HealthPlus individual plans are only available
for 2016 Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs).
Who should we contact with specific producer questions?
Please continue to contact the appropriate HAP or HealthPlus sales teams as you have in the past. Our
sales teams are currently working together and coordinating their activities and support.
How is the merger going to affect the agents’ book of business?
We’re confident that agents, and employers and members, will benefit from HealthPlus joining the HAP
family. Together, we’ll have a significantly larger service area, more products, a robust network and an
experienced and talented team to make it all work. We’re excited about the opportunities for our agents,
who we consider our key business partners.
Will a Medicare supplement be offered?
HAP currently offers a Medicare supplement that will continue to be part of a combined product portfolio.
What is going to happen to the current MAPD plans this time next year? Are they going to be
rewritten into the HAP book of business?
HAP has filed comparable MAPD plans for 2017 with the intent of retaining all existing HAP and
HealthPlus members. Medicare certification and training for agents will be scheduled in late-August. We
will provide product updates when we have received CMS approval.
How will MAPD commissions be paid?
Until we consolidate processes and procedures, we will continue to pay MAPD commissions as we
currently do for products previously sold by HAP or HealthPlus.
