The Assistant will be responsible for on‐site supervision of Market staff, enforcing Market rules
and working directly with vendors and patrons during Market at the Square operations each
Saturday from early May to early November. This position is seasonal and temporary, working
approximately8‐10hourseachweekforthedurationoftheMarketattheSquare(May‐Nov.).The
AssistantwillalsosupporttheMarketDirectorwithpublicrelationsandadministrativefunctions
directlyrelatedtoMarketattheSquareoperationsasneeded.
Dutieswillinclude,butarenotlimitedto:distributingvendorpacketstovendorsatthebeginning
ofeachMarketday,swipingvariouscardsanddisbursingthecorrectamountintokenstopatrons
during the Market, receiving vendor tokens at the end of the Market day, and some light
accounting.
Requirementsinclude:
• AbilitytoworkSaturdaysandbepunctual–mustarriveatofficeby5:20AMandbeon‐siteby
5:45AMatthelatest.MustbeavailabletheentireseasonfromMaythroughNovember.
• FamiliaritywithUrbana’sMarketattheSquareandfarmersmarketsingeneral.
• At least one (1) year of retail/customer service management experience, preferably in a
farmers’marketoroutdoormarketsetting.
• Atleastone(1)yearofexperiencemanagingstaffand/orvolunteers.
• Generalbackgroundandstronginterestinhealthyeatingandimprovingaccesstoaffordable,
nutritiousfood.Knowledgeoflocalfoodpreferred.
• Microsoftofficesoftwareande‐mail.
• Abilitytoliftatleast35pounds
• Ability to multi‐task; resolve conflicts and negotiating with others, handle complaints, settle
disputes,resolveconflicts,andotherwisenegotiatingwithothers;bereliable,responsible,and
dependable,andfulfillobligations;andpositivelyrepresenttheCityofUrbanaandMarketat
theSquaretovendors,patronsandstaff.

Special Event Laborers assist the Market at the Square Director in the following event tasks:
loadingspecialeventsuppliesintoacityvehicle,transportingthesuppliestotheevent,settingup

includeitemssuchastents,trashbarrels,tables,chairs,barricades,supplybins,sandbags,signs,
beverage containers, etc.). The ideal candidate will be punctual, self‐directed, able to creatively
solveproblems,andsupporttheoverallmissionoftheMarketattheSquare.
