The English Riviera – Torquay, Paignton and Brixham
Torquay
Torquay is one of the most stylish resorts in Britain, it is larger that both
Paignton and Brixham with a slightly more cosmopolitan feel. Torquay is of
course famously built on seven hills, however, the waterfront provides over
one mile of level ground with an abundance of cafés, shops, restaurants
and a picturesque seaside promenade. The main high street is
pedestrianised (with the exception of local buses) although it is on a steady
incline. The vast majority of the attractions in Torquay are fully accessible.
Paignton
Paignton is one of the few coastal resorts in Devon where almost all of the
resort is set on level ground, with the town centre, beaches, shops, cafés
and restaurants all within easy walking distance of one another. The main
bus station is also right in the centre of the town and provides great links to
Torquay, Brixham and surrounding areas.
Brixham
Brixham is a picturesque fishing town and is probably the least
commercialised of the three towns on the English Riviera. Brixham is hilly in
places and has some narrow lanes and roads. The waterfront/harbour area
is bustling and vibrant with shops, cafés and restaurants lining the streets.
The waterfront, marina, fish quay and breakwater are all level and easily
accessible.

messages to a Doctor in the Torbay area, who will then contact the patient
directly and discuss their needs.
At Torbay Hospital there is a walk in Medical Centre called Bay Health
Centre based in the Emergency Department of the Hospital in Newton
Road, Torquay.

and for those that may need to use a wheelchair some of the time and can
negotiated maximum of 3 steps.
Mobility Level 3 Independent: Suitable for a person who depends on
the use of a wheelchair and transfers unaided to and from the wheelchair
in a seated position.

for those who are able (possibly with assistance of holiday companions) to
walk a few yards and climb some steps as above.
The nearest shops are about 200m away and there is a bus stop outside the
Atlantis.
The seafront is approximately 400m.
The route to the beach is wheelchair accessible but those with manual
wheelchairs must be aware that the terrain is very hilly away from the
seafront.
The entrance hall is level and is accessible to wheelchairs. All tourist
information, the computer and the payphone are in the hall. We have Wi-fi
internet access.
We live onsite and the entrance to our apartment is off the main reception
hall. Atlantis ensures a completely non smoking and pet free environment.
This is to benefit those with respiratory conditions or allergies.

Car Parking:
Spaces for drivers with disabilities are available in most Torbay Council run
car parks. Disabled blue badge holders do not currently receive free
parking. Torbay Council offer yearly disabled parking permits to blue badge
holders who are eligible. Please visit their website at www.torbay.gov.uk

On Street parking:
Disabled blue badge holders are permitted to park on street on a yellow
line restriction (providing there is no loading ban in place at the location)
for up to 3 hours ensuring that the badge and time clock are displayed
correctly and no obstruction is being caused. When parking in a limited
waiting bay disabled drivers are able to park for as long as required
providing again that the blue badge is displayed correctly.
PLEASE NOTE: Disabled blue badge holders do not have permission to park
in Bus Stops, Taxi Ranks or Loading Bays.

Maidencombe Beach:
Type: Sandy, rocky with cliffs
Access: Difficult and restricted access via a narrow path and set of steep
steps which lead down to the café and beach area.

Oddicombe Beach:
Type: Sandy with cliffs
Access: Access is via a steep road or via the easier Cliff Railway, where a
slope leads to a level promenade above the beach. Access via the steps on
to the beach.

Babbacombe Beach:

Access: Disabled access is difficult. The road down is very steep, there is a
car park at the bottom with a promenade that is level. There are steps

Access: Easy - Access is from the main road to Berry Head, and also by an
easy level walk around the harbour side from the town centre. There are

The Zoo is based in an 80 acre natural environmental park and is
considered reasonably wheelchair and pushchair friendly. Gradients are
less than one in twelve however some appear fairly steep, therefore not all
paths are easy to manage independently in a manual wheelchair.
Wheelchair access is available to the Island Restaurant, shops and all
exhibits. Please ask on arrival for a map of the best routes around the
Zoo. Path surfaces are either tarmac or crushed and rolled stone and there
is plenty of seating around the site.
The Zoo offer visitors the free use of a manual wheelchair. A returnable
deposit of £20.00 is required. Alternatively, there are a limited number of
electric scooters which can be hired for £5.00 plus a returnable deposit of
£20.00. Please telephone the Zoo on 0844 474 2222 to ensure that they are
available.

Living Coasts is a 1 acre site located on Torquay’s harbour. It opened in July
2003 and was built to comply with all relevant DDA regulations. Wheelchair

Mobility: The museum is fully accessible for visitors with mobility problems.
Access to the ground floor is by ramp, while a lift and stair lift will take you

Visitors with visual impairment: The Time Ark Gallery of Natural History has
many items that can be handled. These include tactile birds, fossils and a
lion skin. Certain items in this gallery also have Braille labels. There are also
items that can be handled in the Explorers Gallery and again some Braille
labels. Visitors with hearing impairment: The newly refurbished Pengelly
Hall is fitted with an AV loop.
Parking: The museum has one parking space that can be reserved, please
contact us for details. A large car park can be found on the Terrace which is
only fifty yards from the museum.

The Babbacombe Model Village is built in a steep natural valley, whilst this
adds to its charm it means some steep slopes which affects accessibility. On
entering the gardens there is a moderate to steep slope down and 11
widely spaced steps for about 50m. Coming back out of the garden the
winding path is very steep for about 50m with no steps. These slopes are
difficult and are impossible to negotiate for wheelchair users without the
assistance of at least one, preferably two, very strong and physically fit
assistants per wheelchair and allowing plenty of time.
Taking the above into account, wheelchair users do successfully visit. Apart
from the slopes (entering and leaving the gardens) the garden paths, indoor
areas, facilities and the 4D Theatre are as wheelchair accessible as possible
within the physical constraints of the park. The 4D Theatre has space for a
wheelchair user and there is a disabled toilet at the top of the gardens.
80% of the garden pathway is relatively level. Also worth noting is that the
village is bigger than many first-time visitors anticipate - the path around
the gardens is about 0.6 mile (1km) - more if including indoor areas.
Please note: when you visit, you are welcome to have a look first, or if you
buy tickets and then experience difficulties the Model Village are happy to
offer an appropriate refund within a reasonable time frame. Please feel

There are ramps for wheelchair access onto each train in service, where
there is a designated area for wheelchair users. Customers should be
accompanied by a helper, since train staff are not permitted to assist

suitable for disabled use.

Play area – The Ark is specifically designed to be used by disabled and ablebodied children. The play area was created by a partnership between
Friends of Special Needs Children (FOSNeC) and Torbay Coast and
Countryside Trust. It includes a wheelchair seesaw, a turning stone, sound
boxes, a singing stone, a water feature with seesaw pump and fountain, as
well as slides and ramps, and is a popular attraction for local children’s

The Community Kitchen building houses the ‘Changing Places’ disabled
toilet. The Kitchen has an adjustable height sink, hob and tables. The
Community Garden has raised beds suitable for wheelchair users and has a
relatively flat disabled access area.
The Nature Trail is designed to be wheelchair accessible using boardwalk
and crushed stone. The first part of the trail from the Centre down to the
SSSI zig zags down a sloping field. Occombe Farm Visitor Centre can
