NEW BUSINESS RESPONSES:
1.
COULD TEACHERS ACROSS THE BOARD SPEND MUCH OF THEIR 1ST WEEK OF BELLWORK
TEACHING STUDENTS TO USE THEIR AGENDAS EFFECTIVELY, CREATING VOCABULARY CARDS,
AND MULTIPLICATION FACTS?
*SIP FELT THAT USE OF AGENDA BOOKS WAS COVERED IN ENRICHMENT AND IN INDIVIDUAL
CLASSES. AS FAR AS VOCABULARY CARDS AND MULTIPLICATION FACTS INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS
HAVE DIFFERENT METHODS AND SHOULD BE IN CHARGE OF HOW THEY WANT THEM DONE IN
THEIR CLASSES.
2.
SEVERAL STUDENTS MADE A HUGE SCENE OF BALLING UP THEIR PROGRESS REPORTS AND
THROWING THEM AWAY. MANY STUDENTS COMMENTED THAT THEIR PARENTS ALREADY
KNOW THIS INFORMATION. COULD WE CONSIDER A PHONE CALL HOME FOR INTERIM REPORTS
INSTURCTIONG PARENTS TO CHECK THE PORTAL? OR EMAILING THE SCHOOL IF THEY WANT A
PAPER COPY SENT HOME?
*PAPER COPIES WILL CONTINUE TO BE SENT HOME ACCORDING TO CENTRAL OFFICE.
*AN ALL CALL IS DONE TO NOTIFY PARENTS THAT INTERMIN REPORTS ARE COMING HOME.

*PURCHASING IPADS FOR EACH STUDENT IS NOT FINACIALLY FEASIBLE.
4.

*WE HAVE ANNOUNCEMENT TIME BUILT INTO THE SCHEDULE AND HAVE LIMITED THEM TO 5
MINUTES. ALSO WHEN ANNOUNCEMENTS WERE SENT ELECTRONICALLY PEOPLE DID NOT READ
THEM ON A CONSISTENT BASIS.
5.
CAN TEACHERS CUT IN HALF THEIR DUTY TIME FOR LUNCHES WITH AN ADMINISTRATOR OR
RESOURCE OFFICER OF BOTH IN CHARGE.
*HAVING AN ADIMINISTRATOR OR RESOURCE OFFICER IS NOT RELIABLE DUE TO UNFORESEEN
EMERCENCIES THAT MAY OCCUR.
*TEAMS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ALLOWED TO SET UP THEIR OWN SPLIT LUNCH SCHEDULES
WHERE HALF THE TEAM IS FREE AND THE OTHER HALF HAS DUTY. IF YOUR TEAM CHOOSES TO
DO THIS PLEASE E-MAIL AN ADMINISTRATOR A COPY OF THE PLAN.
Additional Info regarding lunches:

SCHOOL RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR DAMAGED DEVICES. E-MAIL JESSICA FOR A COPY OF THE
FORM.
7.
CAN WE MOVE TEAM/GRADE LEVEL DAYS FROM TUESDAYS TO WEDNESDAYS TO CORRESPOND
WITH THE LONG ELECTIVE DAY?
*SIP CHOSE TO LEAVE THE MEETINGS ON TUESDAYS. THERE WOULD BE DOUBLE MEETINGS ON

New business
1. The question was if the dress code could be amended to allow local HS, and College tshirts as well as Trask t-shirts. SIP thought this should be addressed for next year at a
later date, but not change the dress code at this point in the year. PTA representative,
Mrs. Lord, also mentioned that this would have an effect on PTA sales, which raise quite
a bit of money for the school.
2. Regarding the printer/toner question, it was stated that Jessica would still provide
toner/ink for networked computers at Trask. Networked computers will still be placed
about the school.
3. Money for an after school late bus for tutoring was requested. PTA is checking for
prices as Noble’s PTA funds their after school late buses. It was suggested that we look
into possible grants for the money . If anyone has any suggestions on how to fund this
after school tutoring bus please share with a SIP committee member.
Old business
1. The Lang. Arts SIP goals/strengths/improvement stategies and action steps were
compiled.
2. The goals and plans for Math and Science will be completed on Friday afternoon by the
subject area teams.
***SIP will meet again next Wednesday in place of content meetins to finalize the SIP plan.

New Business:
A. In regards to the question about having a Spirit Week, the SIP committee felt it was
advantageous to the sports participants and the student body. The following
recommendations were made in order to cut down on some of the distractions:
1. Just take pictures of the participants during lunch time.
2. Plan ahead-let teachers know about the pep rally times and activities at least a week
ahead of time. This would greatly help those directly involved in the pep rally
activities.
B. Class disruptions
1. Mrs. Dousharm will address the classroom disruptions that are caused by general
annoucements being made over the intercom during class time.
C. Fundraising concerns were discussed.
1. Mrs. Lord asks for patience with the PTA fundraisers. Being new to this school it is a
learning experience for the current PTA board.
2. Future planning and collaboration will be made with school fund raisers.
3. A school wide Virginia Diner Peanuts fundraiser was discussed. No decision was
made at this time.
4. Another discussion was on offering different levels of PTA memberships (silver, gold,
plantinum) to parents. This idea is how the PTA’s at Trask, Hoggard, and Noble are
offering to parents. We will research more information and consider it for next
year.
D. PTA requested that grade levels and subject areas give them feedback on what they
need from the PTA. They have money in their general fund and want to help the school.
Please meet and create a wish list or needs list for them so they can better meet the
needs of the school. Each grade level/subject area chair should give compiled list of
how to spend the money to their grade level administrators who will share them with
the PTA.
E. Teacher Working Conditions Survey results comparing 2012 with 2014 were shared and
discussed by SIP. Each member of the committee will compile what they feel are the
top 4 areas that can be improved on at this school. All staff are welcome to share ideas
with their SIP team representatives.

A. Academic Pep Rally’s will be held for all grade levels. Mrs. Woodlock and Mrs. Rappold
are in charge and will meet with each grade level to finalize plans.
B. There was a suggestion that we honor our perfect attendance honorees with a dress
down day. SIP accepted this suggestion.
C. A mid-year review of the school’s SIP goals was completed. All areas are on target.
D. PTA would like teacher suggestions for what they would use Bear Bucks for as awards
and incentives in their classrooms. Please send your suggestions in to the SIP box or
your grade level SIP representative.
E. PTA is sponsoring a Color Run/Walk on March 21 at Laney. This is open to the
community as well as all families, faculty, athletic teams, school groups etc. The cost is
$30 (t-shirt included). 70% of the profit comes back to the school. We will share this
profit with Relay for Life. A kick off rally will be held Feb. 13 during enrichment. The
tutu challenge to raise $1000 for Relay for Life is a part of this activity. Please watch
your e-mail for more information.
F. The results of the teacher working condition survey were shared. SIP would like to do a
new survey monkey that will ask for specific suggestions for improvement from the staff
on the areas that came back as the lowest scoring areas. Mrs. Dousharm and Mrs.
Woodlock will be sending out this survey. Please participate. SIP values your input.
G. SIP will also be showing our staff appreciation on Feb. 13th with some snacks in the
teachers’ lounge.

New Business (from the suggestion box)
A. Regarding the suggestion that we dismiss students at the end of the day to the
gymnasium: We use to do this several years ago. SIP felt it was safer to continue to
dismiss as buses arrive. Also the gym is not always available at the end of the day for
the number of students that would be involved. Please feel free to attend the next SIP
meeting to further address your concerns and have a more detailed discussion.
B. The results of the 24 staff members who responded to the teacher working condition
survey were compiled and shared by Mrs. Woodlock with the SIP team. Several
members of the SIP committee will meet to categorize the results and list the items we
can or cannot fix. These results will be shared with the staff.
C. The FBLA and Student Council will be working on a business plan for the PTA’s Bear
Bucks idea. We will hopefully have it set up to go for next year. Also, please remember
to sign up for the Color Run being sponsored by our PTA.

Responses to questions from staff:
1.
Why do we have enrichment? This time could be used to add extra time to lunch or to our
classes. I would prefer extra time in classes especially since standard 6.
Response: At this point, Trask needs the 30 minutes for STAE and to provide EC minutes as part
of students’ IEP’s. Also there has been success with the students in the reluctant readers’
group. SIT welcomes suggestions on more creative or innovative ways to use the enrichment
time for the remainder of the students at Trask. Please email your suggestions to either Amber
Hines or Diana Woodlock.
2.
The elective teachers would like to get rid of the long day schedule for electives. We would like
to see each class each day.
Response: The PE department reported that studies show that students should participate in
some type of physical activity every day. The 90 minute block kills some of the inactive
students. When Lauren polled the elective teachers the majority voted to do away with the two
long days and instead meet every day for each class. Since it affects the elective teachers, and
the majority said do away with long days, SIP agreed to that suggestion.
3.
After students have been assigned to Time-Out, Office Lunch, and ISS several time for related
offenses, at what point does the administration think it is time to have intervention plans in
place and possible consider OSS?
Response: Every referral is situational. The consequences depend on the student, the type or
severity of the incidence, and the number of incidences. Staff members are not always privy to
the investigated details of an incident. Please see your grade level administrator for a more
detailed discussion about specific students’ you are concerned about. They will be more than
happy to share their reasoning and have a discussion with you.
4.
The solicitation of people through school email and school mailboxes needs to stop, especially
when a supervisor is soliciting those who work for him or her. Employees should not be made
to feel they should purchase items from those they work with and under.
Response: Jessica Scharff shared that there is no control over what people within the county
send out in school emails. Regarding what is placed in your mailbox, if it’s in your mailbox and
you aren’t interested please let the person know not to include you anymore. They will not be
offended, and would rather know not to bother you. SIP also suggested that we create “No
solicitation” stickies to place on the mailboxes of those of you that are not interested in
receiving any such type of mail. As always, any other suggestions to address this problem are
welcome.
New Business: Dress code
 The school survey had a stricter dress code policy winning.
 Diana Woodlock has drafted a letter to go home and on the web-site explaining the
reasoning behind this stricter code. This will be shared with the staff.
 All staff members who want a say as to what they would like to see can please email their
suggestions to Amber or Diana. They will compile the results. This must be done by
Tuesday, June 2. SIP needs to finalize the dress code by Friday, June 5.
