20 January 2017 Dear Parents I have received numerous requests for absence from school this past week (grandparents’ anniversaries, overseas holidays, grandparents’ birthdays etc.). Requests for absence from school will be denied, unless the circumstances are of an extremely urgent nature. I remind parents that, for very obvious reasons relating to safety, no skateboarding is allowed on ANY part of the SACS campus. The boys have also been reminded of this. Mr Ball is pictured above with Bronson Rudner (left) and Liam Abrahams (right) at the Western Cape Awards Ceremony last week. Our boys placed as follows in the Western Cape rankings: Mathematics and Science Accounting Geography History Bronson Rudner Mikal Kooiker Zi Yang He Jean-Luc Ciapparelli We are up and running with Google Classroom and the boys are connected to the School network via Wi-Fi and have been allocated 1GB of data per month for the school terms. There may still be some teething problems and Staff will gradually move appropriate aspects of their classroom practice online. Boys are encouraged to be proactive in using Google tools now available to them in order to easily communicate and collaborate in respect of their academics. Pupils who are still not connected for whatever reason are please to approach Mr Jones for assistance. A reminder that the parents’ prayer group meets every Thursday morning at 7:30am in the Brodie Room. All parents are welcome to attend. First Third Third Sixth I remind parents that NO SACS BOY is allowed to drive a motor vehicle on the campus, whether accompanied by a parent or not (and whether he has a learner’s or driver’s licence, or not). This is a strict safety precaution and we do NOT make any exceptions to the rule, at ANY stage of the year. I also remind parents to take care when driving on the campus and, particularly, when exiting off Newlands Avenue. Please ensure you stop if the pedestrian robot is red. The annual Paarl Boys’ High School Invitation Athletics Meeting takes place on Friday 27 January 2017 at their Brugstraat Sporting Complex in Paarl (turn right down Brugstraat at the garage, off Main Road, Paarl). The School arranges transport for our athletes and supporters, the cost being R50.00 (the major portion is subsidized by the school). Last year approximately 500 boys travelled out to support the team and all enjoyed the tremendous ‘spirit’ and atmosphere. The boys travel out in uniform but do not take boaters (not to be brought to School on that Friday). Busses depart from the parking area at the Aqua Centre at 3:00pm. The busses return to the same area at approximately 11:40pm. Blazers and other valuables must not be left lying around at Paarl. In order to reserve their places on a bus, boys must pay their R50 to any of the School Prefects as soon as possible. For any queries, please contact Mr Andre van Wyk, Head of Athletics ([email protected]). On the night, Grade 8 parents should park and collect their sons at the Aqua Centre, while other parents are requested to park and meet their sons up at the School, so as to avoid congestion at the Aqua Centre. 1 We are pleased to be told by King’s College that our two exchange boys, Thomas Mitchell and Liam Schrickker, are making an excellent contribution at King’s College, having attended classes and represented the school in both hockey and football fixtures. They are fitting in well and the feedback from the staff at King’s College has been positive about them. They will return to SACS at the end of January. School will close at 2:20pm on Wednesday 25 January 2017 due to Open Day which commences at 3:30pm. Sport practices will remain as per usual. The South African National Youth Sailing Championships were held at Theewaterskloof Dam during the school holidays. SACS was well represented at these championships and the results were as follows: The new grade 8s arrived at school on the morning of Monday 9 January and, after some administrative tasks, they boarded buses for the Grade 8 camp at Buffalo Drift near Gouda. On arrival they were greeted by the instructors and placed into seven teams. They then had to erect their tents and, for the rest of the day, the teams did ice-breaking tasks to get to know each other, followed by a welcome afternoon swim in the river. In the evening they were taken for a hike where they viewed the wild game on the farm. On Tuesday the teams participated in seven different activities, ranging from paintball and archery to canoeing and water purification. The goal of the camp was for the boys from different schools to get to know each other and to make new friends. They also learnt how important teamwork is in completing any task. Even though the boys were out of their comfort zones, they adapted well and displayed great team spirit. We wish the water polo players well for their fixtures against Rondebosch Boys’ High School, the cricketers well for their fixtures against Paarl Gymnasium and the U14 oarsmen well for the Novice Regatta this weekend. The First Cricket Team play away on Saturday at 9:30am and the First Water Polo Team at home on Saturday at 12:20pm. Yours sincerely K. R.
