UWA Kids Sports Holiday Program - Parents Handbook On behalf of the UWA Sport and Recreation Association (UWA Sports), I would like to welcome you and your child to the UWA Kids Sports Holiday Program. All activities will take place on The University of Western Australia’s (UWA) Crawley campus with developmentally appropriate activities which promote life-long learning of fitness and sporting skills. The skills are experienced in a recreation setting to encourage each child to explore fun and diverse activities. UWA Sports has an excellent group of experienced and enthusiastic staff leading the program, who have participated in extensive pre-training and are certified with CPR/First Aid and all have received their Working with Children accreditation. The UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre, located on the UWA Crawley campus has many facilities including the Sports Hall which includes basketball, badminton, volleyball and other multipurpose courts. The Centre also contains two squash courts, a group fitness studio, eight outdoor tennis courts and a fully equipped gym. The gym and gym equipment will not be utilised by the Kids Program. The Riley Oval which is a multipurpose sports grass field will also be used for the program. Age restrictions are thoroughly enforced. Participants must be a minimum of 5 years-of-age, and under 14 years-of-age at the time of the program’s commencement to be eligible. What to pack for a day at UWA Kids Sports Program Clothing and Shoes Children should come to UWA Kids Sports dressed for a day of activity. We recommend outdoor activity clothes and athletic shoes (no sport sandals or open-toed shoes). You may want to include additional pairs of socks to help with blister prevention. A hat is also required. Water bottle Water is a vital component when being physically active. Parents are asked to send a water bottle/squeeze bottle each day, labelled with your child’s name. Please encourage your child to drink water while they are attending UWA Kids Sports. We also allow for many water breaks throughout the day and cold water fountains are available to refill bottles. Sunscreen Your child will participate in outdoor activities everyday (except when raining). For protection from the sun, we recommended applying sunscreen on your child prior to arrival. We encourage you to send sunblock with your child although sunscreen will be available if required. Snacks and Lunches We do not offer food options at UWA Kids Sports. Please ensure your child brings lunch and snacks for the day from home as UWA Sports does not allow children to purchase food or drinks from the Front Desk. Please include a few snacks in your child’s lunch as the program allows a break for morning tea and afternoon tea throughout the day. We encourage all parents and children to limit the use of peanuts and peanut butter in children’s lunches. As you may be aware, severe peanut and nut allergies are becoming more common in children and UWA Sports are trying to limit children’s exposure to these hazards. We cannot guarantee a totally nut free environment as we are open to the public. Arriving at UWA Kids Sports The program begins at 8:00am with afternoon collection times of 1pm (half day) or before 5:30pm (full day). The 5:30pm pick-up time is strictly enforced. Check-in Procedures We will have a list of all children enrolled in the UWA Kids Sports Program in the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre foyer, if your child is not on the list please see reception staff. Check-in is open from 8am to 9am daily. Please bring your child into the Centre with you for sign-in. When entering the Centre, a UWA Kids Sports leader will be at the sign-in desk to greet you and your child. Late Arrivals All late arrivals (after 9:00am) must report to the front reception area of the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre. Departing from UWA Kids Sports Early Departures Advanced notice must be given in writing to the staff at check-in time if your child needs to leave early. All children who need to leave early will be picked up from the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre and signed out accordingly. Check-out Procedures You are required to sign-out your child at time of collection at the front desk in the UWA Recreation and Fitness Centre. If another person, other than a parent/guardian will be collecting your child, a signed letter identifying the responsible adult who will be collecting your child must be provided at check-in. Valuables Please leave all valuables at home. Label all of your belongings. All phones, iPods and other portable music players, collector cards, hand held video games, etc. are not to be brought to the UWA Kids Sports Program (even during the lunch break). Items that are not appropriate at UWA Kids Sports will be confiscated and locked in the UWA Sports office. UWA Sports is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Accidents and Emergencies In the case of an emergency or accident involving your child, you will be notified following notification of the appropriate emergency personnel. All UWA Kids Sports staff are certified in First Aid and CPR and have been trained in emergency procedures at all locations. Illness If your child should become ill while at UWA Kids Sports, you will be notified. We do not have a registered nurse on staff; therefore, we will ask you to make the decision whether to remove your child from the program for the day. Please call 6488 2286 if your child is ill and cannot attend the program on their enrolled days. Medication/EpiPen/Inhaler We are not responsible for administering your child’s medication. If your child does require medication, the parent/guardian will be required to administer it at UWA Kids Sports Program. Your child is responsible for carrying his/her EpiPen or inhaler with him/her at all times. Your child will show their leader where it is carried on their person. The use of a bum bag has proven the most successful way to do this. In the event of an extreme emergency, the program coordinator will administer the EpiPen. Discipline At the UWA Kids Sports Holiday Program, we are aware that there will be a times when every child has a difficult day. First and foremost, we want to quickly resolve any conflicts and keep your child involved in the activities. On occasion, it may be necessary to give the child a chance to regroup/time out away from the activity area. If your child still has difficulty in the situation, you will be notified by way of a telephone call and/or discussion with the leader at drop-off or pick-up time. If the behaviour persists and conflicts cannot be resolved, or the situation is severe, you will be contacted immediately and the incident(s) may result in suspension from the program. In some repeat situations expulsion may result. We are not a child care facility and do not have enough staff for one-to-one supervision. Therefore, if there is a behavioural incident that requires removal from the day’s activities and you are not available, your emergency contact will be asked to come and pick up your child.
