The conference will focus on learning experiences through masterclasses and workshops. Delegates will receive certificates of achievement for each masterclass/workshop attended. Our keynote speaker, Dr Hamish McAllister-Williams, will present the most up to date evidence from a shortly to be published guideline on prescribing in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Dr McAllister-Williams chaired the guideline development group, which is a joint endeavour of the British Association of Psychopharmacology and the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Perinatal Section. The masterclass (maximum 30 delegates) on risk management in maternal mental illness will be led by Dr Margaret Oates OBE. Dr Oates is recognised internationally for her work in service development, and with the Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths. Currently, she chairs NHS England’s Clinical Reference Group on service development and delivery for perinatal mental health. The masterclass will last 2 hours and will equip those who already have some knowledge and experience in the area, with additional skills in the detection and management of women at high risk of major mental illness in the perinatal period. Workshops (maximum 30 delegates) will last 50 minutes and provide an expert-led introduction to specific topics, aiming to increase knowledge and skills. Topics for this year’s conference will include managing grief in pregnancy and early postnatal loss, basic skills in interpersonal therapy, child protection in maternal mental illness, developing user and carer involvement in perinatal mental illness detection and management, managing eating disorders in the perinatal period, and developing local pathways for maternity and primary care.
