23 “I CAN START A POINT” PRATICE ACTIVITY P17 Singles/Doubles Serve/Return Goal: To understand starting the point. Goal: To understand starting the point (singles & doubles). Rules of the Game: Players are grouped into teams of one server & one returner. Server must serve from the singles position, the returner must return back to the server crosscourt (anywhere on the ½ width of the court). The server then serves from the doubles position and the returner sends it back. Completing this sequence of 4 shots gains 1 point. Players on the team then switch roles. Make sure teams switch from Ad side to Deuce side each point. TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements. TACTIC: To understand starting the point with consistency (in singles and doubles). TECHNICAL KEY #1: Set-up: Server starts in proper serve location (behind Green baseline). Returner starts on baseline in ready position (near singles sideline). . TECHNICAL KEY #2: Impact Point: Server should impact at full upward extension. Returner can respond with either FH or BH (depending on serve placement). Returner should impact: Waist level Out front (in front of body) Comfortable distance from body TECHNICAL KEY #3: Throwing action: Server performs a throwing action to send the serve.
