shows, sport and snow round off the year

No. 11 Autumn Term 2010
shows, Sport and snow round off THE YEAR
Rock Your Baby
On Monday 6th December and Tuesday 7th December
the children in key stage one put on a nativity play called
Rock Your Baby.
Children as young as four were the stars of the show.
The children have all been rehearsing during lunchtimes
for the past few weeks. The first show on Monday morning
was for the key stage one children, this was followed by a
second performance after school to family and friends. On
Tuesday morning the children performed for the children
in key stage two with the final show for family and friends
after school. Everyone worked hard to learn their lines and
their cues, making all four performances a success and
judging by the positive reaction from the audience a big
hit.
The children from year three performed in the choir,
under the direction of Mrs Misquita, they worked just as
hard, singing eight songs.
The show would not have been possible without the
support of all the staff, Miss Angeli, Mr Sternberg and
Mrs Khalfi who produced the show, Mrs Khalfi for the
costumes and backgrounds, Mrs Misquita for musical
direction, Mr Sharma for lighting and all the staff who
helped get the children changed. We would also like to
thank all the parents and families who came to support the
show and we hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we
enjoyed working on it.
Annie Junior
As the newsletter goes to print we are putting the finishing
touches to our production of Annie Junior. Pupils from
Years 5 and 6 have worked incredibly hard during the last
few weeks. 35 children took part in the actual play and 40
children in the choir. Mrs Misquita has been the overall
musical director, with Mr Richards producing the show
and designing the set. Mrs Parsons has been responsible
for the props. Mr Randeria and Miss Charlton took
responsibility for the dance choreography. Of course, Mrs
Khalfi was responsible for the fantastic costumes. A big
thank you to all the children and staff for their hard work.
I’m sure that those of you that came to see the shows, will
agree that we have some very talented pupils at Byron
Court !
Wizard Theatre
On Monday 29th November Wizard Theatre visited the
school. All the children from Reception – Year 4 enjoyed a
performance of ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’.
The Globe Theatre
On Tuesday the 30th of November Year 5 braved the snow
to go on a trip to the Globe Theatre. This fitted perfectly
with our autumn projects of Tudors, the Theatre and
Puppets.
We started with a drama workshop led by one of
the actors. We worked on the start of Hamlet using
Shakespeare’s language and lots of techniques to make
it understandable for the children. This was a very
interactive and fun session.
Next, we toured the theatre itself and had the
opportunity to go on stage and delivery some of the lines
we’d learnt and to sit in the seats and pretend we were the
audience.
The Globe has a standing area in front of the stage for
those who are less well off and can’t afford a seat and this
area does not have a roof so it was strange to be inside
with it snowing on us.
Many thanks to the parents who came with us. Overall,
it was a very enjoyable day, which we all thoroughly
enjoyed.
The British Museum
In year four, during the Autumn term, we have been
studying ancient Egypt. To help us with our learning on
Thursday 2nd of December class 12 and 13 went to see the
‘Book of the Dead’ exhibition at the British Museum. This
exhibition is only running for a short time, therefore we
felt very lucky to have the chance to see it. During the day
we learnt about: the afterlife, spells, amulets, canopic jars
and lots more. We even got to see a real mummified body
that is thousands of years old. We had lots of fun during
the trip and found this experience invaluable. Furthermore,
we would like to thank parents who helped us on the trip
as without their assistance this day would not have been
possible.
North Brent Indoor Athletics
On Monday 29th of November, Byron Court took a very
talented squad to an Athletics Tournament at Oakington
Manor. Byron Court have an impressive record in this
competition, coming second in each of the previous three
years.
The squad consisted of 8 boys – Nickolas C, Calvin,
Joshua, Rashaan, Nicolas H, Laith, Joseph and Mahmoud;
and 10 girls – Maya, Chloe, Helayna, Sharnez, Rhiana,
Nicole, Ahlam, M’Khaiya, Umika and Khadijah.
The children took part in up to 2 track events and 2 field
events.
Byron Court Primary School Tel: 020 8904 2785 Email: [email protected] www.byroncourtschool.co.uk
The field events took place before lunch with Byron
Court coming first in both the boys and girls vertical jump
and long jump and second in the speed bounce (boys and
girls) and the standing triple jump (both boys and girls).
Special mentions to M’khaiya and Rashaan for the
furthest long jumps of 1.04m! M’Khaiya and Rashaan
were also the top boy and girl at the vertical jump, both
leaping 55cm. Meanwhile, Chloe did an incredible 50
speed bounces in 20 seconds to be the best at her event.
Maya was the best girl at chest push, throwing a 2kg ball
almost 6m!
This meant that both squads were second over all behind
St. Joseph’s going into the afternoon track events.
These included the 2 person relay, 6 lap paarlauf (where
2 children run 6 laps between them), a 4 person over/under
relay and a final 4 person relay.
The girls were impressively quick and came second in
all 4 races. The boys too were impressive coming first
in the 6 lap paarlauf where Calvin and Nickolas C. won
comfortably. The boys then came second in the other 3
races.
The Byron Court squad came second overall to an
outstanding St. Joseph’s team who will surely now go on
to win the West London Tournament just as we did two
years ago.
As always the children represented the school with
pride, determination and 100% effort. They were a
pleasure to take out for the day and we are very proud of
their achievements.
Friendly vs St. Joseph’s , Willesden
On Friday 12th November, St. Joseph’s (Willesden) came
to Byron Court for a friendly fixture. St. Joseph’s are a
strong side who beat us recently in the Brent Tournament
1–0. Our boys were determined not to lose their unbeaten
home record and did not disappoint.
Despite St. Joseph’s taking an early lead, Byron Court
came out for the second half and attacked strongly,
looking for the equaliser, but St. Joseph’s goalkeeper was
in great form. Eventually Josh broke free down the left,
his hard shot was parried back to him by the goalkeeper,
he then cleverly lobbed the goalkeeper and Calvin ran
forward to head over the line to make it 1–1.
Both sides had their chances to win, but the defences
stayed firm, with Mahmoud pulling off a good save late in
the game and Oliver defending superbly. Man of the match
was Calvin.
The game ended 1–1, and we gave debuts to 2 boys,
Ramiah from year 4, and Sahel from year 6.
Team: Nick C (Capt.), Mahmoud, Laith, Oliver, Ramiah,
Calvin, Joshua, Mason, Sahel.
North Brent League vs Sudbury
Friday 19th November
Unbeaten in the League since Mr Randeria joined
Byron Court almost 5 years ago, the boys started their
defence of the trophy in style. They went straight on the
attack against a strong Sudbury team. Nickolas, Calvin
and Ramiah were dominating and creating chance after
chance. However, they were continuously thwarted by
the giant Sudbury goalkeeper. Omar came on 5 minutes
before half-time and the Tottenham star soon made the
difference creating chances for Joshua (2) and Nickolas to
give Byron Court a 3–0 half-time lead.
Byron Court added a fourth in the second half through
a Nickolas penalty and even though he missed another
penalty later on, it was an excellent performance from
the whole team and a good result to take Byron Court to
the top of the League. A special mention to our defence;
Mahmoud, Oliver and Laith for keeping a clean sheet.
The Boys squad was made up of Mahmoud (gk),
Nickolas C (c), Calvin, Oliver, Laith, Mason, Omar,
Joshua, Ramiah and Kashif.
Final score: 4–0
Scorers: Nickolas (2), Joshua (2)
Brent Cup Round 1 vs Donnington
Tuesday 23rd November
Byron Court have won the Brent Cup a record 8 times
and looked to get off to a good start this year against a
Donnington team playing their first competitive match in
3 years.
Having already scored 8 goals in their first 3 home
games, Byron Court were straight on the attack looking
to score quickly. Captain and top scorer Nickolas scored
first with a penalty in the second minute and Byron Court
didn’t look back after that. They were 5–0 up at half-time
and they were hungry for more in the second half. The
team scored another 8 as they won comfortably.
The Boys squad made up of Mahmoud (gk), Nickolas C
(c), Calvin, Oliver, Laith, Mason, Omar, Joshua, Nicolas H
and Kashif.
Final Score: 13–0.
Scorers: Mason (4), Nickolas (3), Joshua (2), Nicolas H
(2), Omar and Kashif
Capital Growth programme
After our success in the Brent in Bloom competition we
applied to the Capital Growth programme for funding
to set up our food growing project, we are pleased to say
we were successful and were awarded funding of £500
towards our project.
‘The project is part of the Capital Growth scheme, which
aims to help create 2,012 new community food growing
spaces by the end of 2012. Capital Growth is a partnership
initiative between London Food Link, the Mayor of
London, Boris Johnson, and the Big Lottery’s Local Food
Fund.’
We plan to build raised beds near to the wildlife area
where each year group will be given the opportunity to
grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Recently we have extended the wildlife area as we plan
to design a pampas grass area with a rockery to contain
heathers and lavender, hopefully these plants should attract
bees to the area. We have also been busy planting winter
pansies and primroses in the beds outside classes 1 to 4 as
well as planting daffodil and tulip bulbs. All this has been
possible thanks to the B.C.S.A who have kindly donated
funds to purchase all these plants, so on behalf of all the
Wildlife Club we would like to say a big thank you to
them.
Hopefully the cold weather won’t last too much
longer so we will be able to continue planting the rest
of our winter plants and look forward to spring with the
blooming of many daffodils and tulips.

Cyclist safety near Heavy Goods Vehicles
On Tuesday 23rd November, Year 6 pupils were visited by
Council Road Safety Officers and staff from Pickfords the
removal company. They came to talk to the children about
the potential dangers posed by large vehicles to cyclists,
particularly at road junctions.
As well as hearing some sobering stories from the Road
Safety Officers in the classroom, the children were given
a practical demonstration of the blind spots around large
vehicles.
A Pickfords van was parked on the playground and
children were asked to sit in the driver’s seat and imagine
that they were driving. They then checked their mirrors to
spot cyclists at blind spots around the vehicle and to honk
the horn when the cyclist came into view. The horn was
often sounded too late to have avoided an accident.
Many accidents involving cyclists and HGVs are as a
result of the HGV turning left into the path of the cyclist.
Cyclists should be aware of the blind spots around large
vehicles and that when a lorry pulls out to the right it is
often because it is about to turn left.
We are grateful to Pickfords and the Council Road
Safety Officers for their visit. Parents should ensure
that, before their children start to cycle on the roads, this
important lesson is not forgotten.
Book Fair
Many thanks to everyone that supported the Book Fair
that was held on November 30th and December 1st. We
sold £800 worth of books, which means that the school
have now received £800 of free books. The books have
been distributed equally amongst all 19 classes so that all
the children are able to enjoy them.
All hands to the Pump!
It takes a lot to impress classes 1,2 and 3, but after several
phone calls and e-mails Miss Parker was as delighted as
the pupils to see 6 fire-fighters and their engine pull into
Byron Court.
Although slightly later than planned due to an earlier
call out, the fire-fighters of Blue Watch from Wembley
Fire Station arrived with sirens blaring to teach the pupils
from Early Years about the dangers of fire.
After explaining what to do in an emergency and how
to call “999” the classes were able to ask questions and
carefully inspect the fire engine. “Isn’t it big !” said one
“Isn’t it red !” said another.
Then came the exciting bit – the demonstration of the
hose and water pump. Konrad exclaimed “This is fun”,
and the whole class yelped with delight when they saw
Miss Parker get very, very wet !
Sadly, after an all too short visit, Blue Watch had to
leave as a row of very happy pupils waved them a fond
farewell. Byron Court were delighted that the fire-fighters
were able to come to the School, and all the staff and
pupils are hoping to see them again in the Summer.
Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if some wanted to be
fire-fighters themselves!
Hello and Goodbye…
We’d like to say thank you and goodbye to Mrs DeWinnar
who will be leaving us at the end of this term. We wish her
well for the future.
Miss Pritchard will be taking Class 15 from January, a
warm welcome to her.
As you know, Miss Tobutt is currently on maternity
leave – we’re expecting to hear news of the new arrival
very soon. Mr Moroney has just joined us and is taking
Class 13.
Also, we’d like to welcome Mrs Clark to Byron Court
who will be taking over as the new Headteacher from
January.
