Frank Chillura, Mayor
City of Temple Terrace
Generations of families and new residents of all ages
and cultures embrace our close-knit community. With
its proximity to University of South Florida and our
own Florida College, Temple Terrace is a popular and
convenient community for many faculty, staff, students
and alumni to call home. We’re a true “academic
enclave,” and in this issue you’ll get to meet some of
your USF and Florida College neighbors.
With year-round events and endless activities, Temple
Terrace is a rich collaboration of people working together to enhance the
quality of life for all residents. It was a real pleasure connecting with so
many friends and neighbors during the inaugural Bike with the Mayor event
coinciding with Ride Your Bike to Work Day. More than 70 people joined in
the 2-mile ride along our shady streets, expanding awareness that Temple
Terrace is a multimodal city where walkers, cyclists, runners and golf carts are
welcome on our streets.
I encourage you to join in the many activities available to you in our
community. We’ve been a recreation destination since the 1920s and
continue to offer a wide array of events, programs and activities providing
fun, fitness and sense of community for residents and visitors of all ages.
Enjoy our Amazing City,
P.S. Cool weather brings even cooler events and activities. Keep this
PlayBook handy to find specific dates of upcoming events, or visit www.
templeterrace.com for the latest happenings. Check out page 26 for a list of
community events going on through April 2015. Hope to see you out and
about in our amazing community.
Temple Terrace: Faculty Town
The Place to Live and Play for USF and Florida College Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni
Chances are if you meet someone from Temple Terrace, they have a connection to the University of
South Florida or Florida College. Pride in the USF Bulls and Florida College Falcons runs deep, with
many faculty, staff, students and alumni living and working in our community.

in the community; we had an instant
connection with other families and it was a great way for our kids
to meet other children,” said Dr. Christian Wells, a professor with the
Department of Anthropology at USF.
Christian and his wife, Dr. Karla Davis-Salazar, moved to Temple
Terrace 11 years ago while he was establishing the university’s
Office of Sustainability. Karla is an Associate Dean of Undergraduate
Studies at USF as well as a professor in Anthropology. The couple
has two daughters: Eva, 8, and Ana, 12.
“We’re both archeologists and attracted to places with history, and
Temple Terrace had a real recognizable sense of heritage,” Christian
said. Originally from Chicago, the couple was familiar with Bertha
Palmer, the Chicago socialite who envisioned Temple Terrace, and
they appreciated the connection to their hometown.

associated with an urban area, but live in a community that truly
feels like a small town, where you know your neighbors. “The
friendly people, unique homes, oak trees, and Hillsborough River all
add to the hometown feeling,” he said.
As a busy working mom, Karla appreciates the convenience of
being close to everything – she can even go home for lunch from
work. And it is just a quick drive to the recreation center where their
girls participate in ballet, gymnastics,
tennis, volleyball and summer and afterschool programs.
“So much of our life revolves
around the rec center and Lewis
Elementary,” Karla said. “They are
right in the heart of the community
and a great place to meet your
neighbors. We’ve met more of our
USF colleagues at school and rec
center events than on campus.”
Dr. Karla Davis-Salazar
As big community supporters, they host
an annual Fourth of July party at their home on the 12th hole of the
Temple Terrace golf course, along the parade route, and each year
they purchase a piece of local art at the Temple Terrace Arts Festival.

A Community Distinct in Character
While jogging through

beautiful oaks that shaded
her run, as well as the unique
character of all the homes. She
Candi Ashley
soon moved from Brandon to
a home in Temple Terrace. “The more I ran in Temple
Terrace and visited friends who lived here, I knew
this was where I wanted to be,” she said. “It’s quaint,
safe, has a real sense of community, and everyone
was so friendly.”
Plus, it was much closer to her job as a professor of
Exercise Science at USF, where she teaches and conducts
research. Now a 15-year resident of Temple Terrace, she
likes that once people come to Temple Terrace, they stay.
She has noticed that generations of families continue to
live here. “That says a lot about a community,” she added.
Candi appreciates the Temple Terrace Family Recreation
Complex, where she works out several times a week. “I run
a mile to the rec center, lift weights and run another mile
home,” she said. “It’s the perfect workout.”
Choosing to live in Temple Terrace was a smart move for
these academia, and why not? We are just smart here –
48% of Temple Terrace residents possess a college degree,
making us one of the most highly educated communities in
the region (2006-2010 American Community Survey). The
University of South Florida, Florida College and several public,
charter, magnet and private elementary, middle and high
schools provide every spectrum of academic opportunity.
Candi Ashley discovered Temple Terrace while jogging with her running club and appreciates how close her home is to the recreation center and her job at USF.
