SEND Area Inspection Self-Audit
• From May 2016 local areas will be inspected with regards its local offer of provision
and services for children and young people with special educational needs and
disabilities.
• 5 day inspection with 2 days prior notice
• Involves 3 primary and 3 secondary schools
• First step is for schools and services to complete a self-audit. The audits will then
inform Rochdale’s self evaluation.
SEN Support
• Where a pupil is identified as having SEN, schools
should take action to remove barriers to learning and
put effective special educational provision in place.
• This SEN support should take the form of a four-part
cycle through which earlier decisions and actions are
revisited, refined and revised with a growing
understanding of the pupil’s needs and of what
supports the pupil in making good progress and
securing good outcomes.
• This is known as the graduated approach.
SEN Support Plans
Children, young people and their parents should be involved in a four part cycle:
assess, plan, do, review. An SEN support plan should include:
• The ‘outcomes’ you are aiming for – these should be specific so that when you
review the plan it will be clear if the child has made progress.
• The ‘provision’ is what is needed to meet the outcomes and may include:
– teaching and other support, for example small groups, a teaching assistant or
equipment.
– health or social care provision if it is educating or training the child, e.g.
speech therapy.
– help to prepare for moving to another setting or leaving school.
• When the plan will be reviewed- this should be at least three times a year.
Activity
1.Look at least two SEN Support Plan
templates and compare and contract
2.Group feedback
