YSGOL GYNRADD GWAELOD-Y-GARTH PRIMARY SCHOOL HELP YOUR CHILD WITH MATHS Learning Goals for Reception This leaflet is intended to help you in supporting your child with mathematics out of the classroom. The learning goals are intended to give you some idea of the things your child should be able to do by the end of this year. We welcome your comments about how your child is progressing in relation to any goal. Sometimes your child may need to go back and repeat some activity to help them remember what to do next. Pupil Name ………………………………………………………… GOALS FOR RECEPTION These goals are intended to give you an idea of some of the things most pupils should be able to do by the end of this year. Count in order. Count everyday objects up to 10. Recognise numbers 1-9. Use words like more or less, heavier or lighter. Answer questions such as “how many are left”. Work out one more or one less than a number from 1-10. Start to understand that addition is putting groups of things together and subtraction is taking away. Talk about, recognise and make simple patterns. Name shapes such as a circle, triangle, cube and sphere. Use everyday words such as forwards and backwards. Work out a simple maths problem. SOME FUN ACTIVITIES TO HELP YOUR CHILD’S MATHS Counting the number of stairs on the way to bed. Counting the number of lamp posts on the way home. Spotting numbers on the way home, eg car number plates, house numbers. Working out who is the tallest and shortest, oldest and youngest in the family. Putting magnetic numbers in order on the fridge door. If you put some numbers in order and miss one out, can your child find which one is missing? Can they put all the number 5’s together. Counting buttons, shoes, socks. Playing games such as Snakes and Ladders. Help your child to count the spots or recognise the numbers on the dice. Can they move the right number of spaces? Making patterns with Lego bricks. Sorting coins into piles. Do they recognise a 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p? Looking for different shapes around the house, eg square, triangle, circle, cube, sphere. You might find lots of different shapes in the kitchen and bathroom. Playing dominoes. Can your child recognise the pattern of spots and match them? Playing card games such as Snap and Happy Families.
