6 on 6 Street Hockey Rules
Each player must present a Rowan ID card before each
contest to be eligible to participate.
All intramural participants are responsible for their own medical
expenses. Any student unsure of their physical condition should
check with their family physician or the Student Infirmary before
participating in intramural sports.
Game time is start time. If necessary, each team has until 5
minutes after game time until the game will be called a forfeit. For
each minute after game time that the game must be delayed, the
team in which everyone is waiting will be penalized by spotting the
opposing team a goal per minute.
The officiating will be done by officials who are in absolute control of
the game. Teams are responsible for keeping their spectators under
control. Misconduct of spectators, players or coaches can result in
assessment of a penalty, ejection or forfeiture of the game.
Spectators must also remain in the area designated by the officials.
The officials shall have the power to make decisions on any matters
or questions not specifically covered in the rules.
Length of Game






Game Time is Start Time. Teams must have the minimum number of
players signed in by 5 minutes after start time or team will forfeit.
Three (3) twelve (12) minute periods will be played.
Running clock is in effect until the last two (2) minutes of the final
period. During this time the clock stops for all whistles and scores.
Three-minute intermissions.
Five (5) minute warm-up time starting at game time.
Each team is permitted two (2) time-outs per game, one (1) minute in
length.
Players


Each team will consist of six (6) players including the goalie.
THERE IS A LIMIT OF 2 CURRENT OR FORMER(needs to be one year
removed from the roster) CLUB ICE HOCKEY OR ROLLER HOCKEY
PLAYERS PER TEAM.

Teams may begin play with four (4) players including
the goalie.
Substitutions

Unlimited substitutions, however, a substitute may not enter until the
replaced player is within 5 feet of the teams bench.
Equipment



The Intramural Department will supply two goals and a few round
plastic hockey balls for each game.
Goalie masks are available upon request.
Goalie sticks and chest protectors are provided, but it is strongly
recommended that you bring your own. If our equipment breaks we
are not guaranteed to replace them this season. Goalie pads are
available.
Tie Games



Games resulting in a tie, there will be a 5 minute OT to determine the
winner. A shootout will follow if the winner has not been determined.
Players must be on the court when the game ends to participate in the
shootout, only 3 players can be chosen.
During the playoffs there will be a continuous Overtime (sudden
death) periods of ten (10) minutes (running clock) will be played until
a winner is declared.
Mercy Rule

If a team is ahead by 8 goals at the beginning of the third period, or
anytime during the third period, the game will be ended.
Pinnies




Officials/Supervisor will issue pinnies.
Need to submit your ID in exchange as collateral.
Failure to return all pinnies can result in your team being dropped from
the league.
Purchasing or wearing like colored shirts is strongly recommended.
High Sticks



AT NO POINT MAY A PLAYER RAISE THEIR STICK ABOVE
THEIR WAIST.
ONE exception: if a player is taking a slap shot and they are not within
10 feet of another player, no penalty shall be assessed.
Sticks may not be raised in an effort to knock the ball down.
Goal Crease




No player, besides the goalie, may physically enter the goal crease AT
ANY TIME.
The player may put his stick in the crease, but the feet or body may
not be in the crease.
Offensive player in the crease – play is whistled dead and a face-off
will occur on the opposite end defensive face-off mark.
Defensive player in the crease – play is whistled dead and a face-off
will occur on the near end defensive face-off mark.
NOTE: If offensive player is in crease (interfering with goalie) –
2 minute penalty.If defensive player falls on ball, stopping play
(in crease) – penalty shot.
IMPORTANT
Officials will be instructed to call games closely. Due to prior
incidents and unsportsmanlike behavior the street hockey activity
offering is on probation and under constant scrutiny. Thus,
elimination of the activity is still a possibility if particular incidents
warrant it. READ YOUR INTRAMURAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

INFRACTIONS AND PENALTIES
A list of infractions and penalties is on the next page. Please note –
Captains are the representatives for each team and will be the only
players to engage in discussion with the officials – infraction: 2
minute penalty. Incidental contact may be permitted if both
players are playing the ball, however, the officials will determine if a
player is playing the person rather than the ball. Officials will
determine the severity of each penalty, and penalize
accordingly.
Misc. Rules
-No intentional kicking of the ball into the goal. No penalty occurs,
the goal is just disallowed and the faceoff will be at the opposite end
defensive face-off mark.
-No throwing of your stick in attempt to stop a goal. Thid act will
result in a penalty shot.

2nd Game Misconduct: Out for Season
Players ejected due to “Intent to injure, fighting, 3rd
person in” may be suspended from future league play.
Anyone receiving a game misconduct MUST see the Intramural
Director and Graduate Assistant the following business day or risk
further disciplinary action. Fighting will not be tolerated and teams
involved will be terminated if necessary. Any player accumulating an
inordinate amount of penalties will first be warned by the
department, and then suspended from further play.
