Pupils should be taught to:






understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by
following precise and unambiguous instructions
create and debug simple programs
use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs
use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content
recognise common uses of information technology beyond school
use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support
when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies

Digital Literacy Themes in KS1.
The Computing Curriculum is made up of three strands, Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy.
Digital Literacy is the ability to effectively responsibly safely and critically navigate, evaluate and create digital artefacts using a range of
digital technologies. (David Brown, HMI Computing Lead, July 2014)










What is personal Information and the need to keep it private.
The need to be kind and thoughtful online as in the real world.
That they must tell an adult they trust if they see or hear anything online that makes them feel uncomfortable
All programs, devices, websites, apps and games are designed and made by real people
Someone owns pictures and music online and we can’t just copy them - early awareness of copyright.
We can search for information in a variety of ways and we can influence the outputs of searches.
How to validate information that we find on the internet.
When we share information online we leave a digital footprint.
How to make save and edit digital content i.e. words and pictures, with increasing independence
Develop an awareness of the need for quality and to edit and improve digital content following feedback.

What makes a good
friend.
The qualities of a friend
are the same on and
offline.
People’s feelings can
be very hurt by things
we say online because
we can’t see their faces
We should never meet
an online friend without
an adult. An online
friend we have never
met is a stranger.

Good to Game – Good
to Chat
Year 2









What makes a good
game.
We should always ask
permission to go on a
new game or site.
We should ask our
parents/carers to look
at the game/site with
us first.
We need a strong and
private password to
protect us in games.
If we feel something is
not right we should tell
someone.
Hacking and Griefing
are examples of
Cyberbullying.
Games and sites have
an age rating and we
should only play on
games which are
relevant to our age.
“Free Games” ask us
for our personal
information.
Programmers have
designed free games

Unit 5.1/5.2
Simulations.
Online Games are
essentially
simulations that a
digital creator has
made. ie a real
person had made.
Behind every
simulation are
complex sets of
algorithms which
results in different
outputs depending
on what the user
does.
Some nasty people
write algorithms to
trick us into buying
things or seeing bad
things

Algorithms link the
age of sites we visit

of this is to look on
amazon and see the

South West Grid for Learning Digital Literacy and Citizenship
Our Colleagues at the South West Grid For Learning have produced an excellent Scheme of Work for E Safety and Digital Literacy using
the free Common Sense Media resources
You can find it at http://www.digital-literacy.org.uk/
The resource covers all aspects of Digital Literacy and Citizenship.

Each Year scheme has a downloadable PDF/word document linked from the website and each lesson has a link to the relevant Creative Media Resource on
their website. For example below is the grid for Year 2 lesson 1 . As you can see it has a link “Staying Safe Online” to the Common Sense Media Resources
and in the second column links to other resources.

Another excellent E-safety resource is the Byte eSense Awards that has been produced by Somerset Education Technology Team.
https://slp.somerset.gov.uk/cypd/elim/somersetict/Site%20Pages/e-safety%20pages/e-sense%20Somerset%20BYTE.aspx
This resource provides progressive e-safety schemes of work for each year group from EYFS to Key Stage 4. Resources also include learner assessment
sheets, teacher recording sheets, posters, stickers, certificates and award level webapps. They can all be downloaded and an App is now available.
