Summer One newsletter
Dear Parents/Carers,
This half term the children will be exploring traditional tales in English lessons and with their Guided reading.
The two main texts they will explore will be ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘Rumpelstiltskin’. The children will explore the
characters, setting and plots in the text.
In History the children will be learning about Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 1 and comparing their life
to that of Queen Elizabeth 11. To end our History Unit of work and to link in with Kings and Queens found in
traditional tales we are going to ask your child to come dressed up as a Queen/King/Prince/Princess or Knight
and have a royal tea party.
In Science the children will be learning about plants. They will label the main parts of a plant and carry out an
investigation to find out about the best conditions needed to plant seeds. They will also learn about where
plants grow.
Overleaf, you will see how the subjects are linked into the theme your child will be experiencing and the links
that have been made. There are also suggestions as to how to help your child at home, as this is all part of
working together.
Reminders:




As always, good attendance and punctuality is essential to maintain good progress.
PE lessons are on Wednesday and Friday morning. Please ensure that your child has a suitable kit that
is brought in at the start of the week ready for the lesson.
Library sessions are weekly on a Tuesday afternoon so please ensure your child is ready to return their
library book on this day.
Please make sure that all items of uniform are clearly labelled so that if items get lost they can be
easily returned.
Homework:
 We expect all Y1 children to be reading at home every day. We ask that you sign your child’s reading
record after listening to them read. This then helps speed up the process of changing reading books.
 Phonic words including real and nonsense words will be regularly sent home.
 Learning logs with a Learning Question related to their school work will be sent home on a Friday and
need to be sent back to school by the following Wednesday.
 Maths games and e-books will be regularly uploaded onto your child’s active learn account.
