Get ready for a multimedia journey from prehistory through Ancient Rome, following the adventures of Ragnar, the first trumpeter in human history. Students will learn the basics of sound production, articulation, and navigation of the harmonic series using a natural trumpet (a trumpet with no valves, often called a Baroque trumpet), which will prepare them for playing any of the modern brass instruments in school band. There are only three rules to this method: there is no such thing as a mistake; always applaud after performances and always remain silent during them; and never criticize a performance. The author, Alice Kay Kanack, has been teaching and developing this method since 1982. Intermediate Rock & Blues Guitar covers chord, strumming and pick technique, elements of hooks and melodic patterns, blues riffs, improvisation and performance of several rock and blues songs. Section III: adults TBD Page 10 of 13 Brass for Beginners® for Adults • Class 60 minutes • $415.50 • 15 weeks This 8 week group class is a physically engaging and intellectually stimulating program for adults who never had an opportunity to learn how to play a brass instrument. In addition to learning the basic techniques of brass playing, students will examine and discuss the many historical and cultural contexts in which lip-blown instruments have been used, providing a unique and fascinating perspective on human history. This program is a great introduction to learning any of the modern brass instruments, and a perfect springboard for participation in the New Horizons Band program at MIC. Composer’s Workshop (ages 8-18) • 90 mins • $575 • 6 weeks This monthly class is for young composers who submit their compositions and have the opportunity to hear them played by a designated group of performers. The pieces will be performed by MIC faculty or other highly qualified performers, and there will be instruction regarding how to write for particular instruments. The composers will need to submit their pieces in PDF form, score and parts, written for a specific combination of instruments, by a deadline each month. Pieces do not have to be complete or completely polished, but there should be a substantial amount of music.
