Four Farmington Public Schools’ elementary lunch

to Schools
Farmington MI — Four Farmington Public Schools’ elementary schools are supporting the Let's
Move! Initiative set forth by First Lady Michelle Obama. The Let's Move Salad Bars to Schools program
was launched in 2010 with the mission of donating salad bars to U.S. schools so that every child has
access to fresh fruits and vegetables. This healthy school lunch initiative was founded by the Chef Ann
Foundation, National Fruit and Vegetable Alliance, United Fresh Produce Association Foundation, and
Whole Foods Market. The salad bars are self-contained units, running $3,000 each, that encourage students to make healthy choices.
Currently, Kenbrook Elementary School has the fruit and vegetable bar in use and Hillside Elementary School will be implementing the fruit and vegetable bar in late January. Lanigan and Longacre Elementary Schools are on the waiting list to receive funds to implement the fruit and vegetable bars.
Kenbrook Principal Arnie Rubin said; “Kids are taking advantage of the fruit and vegetable bar; this
helps students get fruits and vegetables in their diet daily instead of occasionally. We have been promoting the benefits of healthy snacks and a healthy lifestyle to the students throughout their curriculum.”
To qualify for Lets Move Salad Bars to Schools, the school must apply for a grant. Once the grant is
approved, the school is put on the approved list and donations for the school can be made online or sent
directly to Let's Move Salad Bars to Schools. It can take up to 12 months for the equipment to be funded.
Schools can accelerate funding of the equipment by encouraging support from the community.
Hillside was first approved for the Salad Bar due to donations raised by Jeff Oberman with United
Fresh. Oberman participated in the Tour de Fresh, which partners with Salad Bars to Schools. Starting
on October 13th this year, 40 cyclists rode a 275-mile four-day trek from Carmel to Anaheim, Califor-

nia. The riders’ goal was to raise $120,000 for 40 privately funded salad bars. Oberman raised more than
$4,000 and named Hillside Elementary School to receive the funds for a salad bar. Oberman is currently
a California resident, but grew up in Michigan.
Ben Pulver, personal chef and trainer, has been working with Principal Robert Kauffman at Lanigan
Elementary School to help raise funds for the Fruit and Vegetable Bar. Pulver is parent of three children
that attend Lanigan. On October 18 this year, Pulver held a “30 Mile Salad Run,” running 30 one-mile
loops and completing addition challenges requested by donors. In between one mile loops, donors asked
him to do bicycle crunches, cartwheels, burpees, and frog hops to name just a few. Lanigan has moved
up the list by adding approximately $1,500 in donations for the Salad Bar.
