EL-60 AND EL-60/i EMPTY/LOAD VALVE TECHNICAL GUIDE Technical Guide For The Product User EL-60/i EL-60 FEATURES: The advantages of the EL-60 and EL-60/i are a smaller envelope and smaller equalizing volume than the conventional SC-1 equipment. In addition: • The EL-60 and EL-60/i are available in 40%, 50% and 60% proportioning models; EL-60 has two pipe connections at the rear and one on the side (volume) of the pipe bracket EL-60/i has all three pipe connections to the rear of the pipe bracket • The EL-60 and EL-60/i incorporate both sensing and proportioning in one axially operated portion • A visual indicator shows empty load brake condition • Automatic replenishment of loading Brake Cylinder in Empty Mode • Automatic increases in Brake Cylinder pressure during Grade Loading • Both the EL-60 and EL-60/i are lightweight, with a minimum of parts • In the empty position (20% load) rock and roll of +/- 1-3/4 inches will not affect the empty load brake • In the loaded position, rock and roll of +/- 1-3/4 inches will not affect the loaded car brake NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CORPORATION A KNORR BRAKE COMPANY www.nyab.com 748 Starbuck Avenue, Watertown, New York 13601 Telephone: 315-786-5200 1-888-TEN NYAB FAX: 315-786-5676 (Administration) 315-786-5675 (Marketing) KNORR BRAKE LIMITED 675 Development Drive Kingston, Ontario, Canada K7M 4W6 Telephone: 613-389-4660 FAX: 613-389-8770 (Administration) 613-389-8770 (Sales) TG-9 / May 2012 / Rev. 09 Page 1 of 4 OPERATION OF THE EL-60 AND EL-60/i EMPTY/LOAD TECHNICAL AND STRUCTURAL FEATURES The EL-60 and EL-60/i use upstream air to effect proportioning. Auxiliary reservoir is equalized with an upstream volume; therefore there is no loss of brake cylinder pressure at changeover. In conventional SC-1 equipment, where the brake cylinder is spilled over into an equalizing volume. The load sensing portion of the EL-60 and EL-60/i is exactly the same as in the traditional S-1 sensor valve, for proven reliability. However, two changes have been made to further improve the reliability: First, a wear bushing has been incorporated in the sensor cover, and second, the adjusting screw has been enlarged from 5/16 inch to 3/8 inch. The proportioning valve is similar to the P1 proportioning valve except that the check valve is installed and moves with the ratio piston. In this arrangement, the ratio piston is initially mechanically positioned, and in empty load brake it is both mechanically and pneumatically positioned. Grade Loading In this design, air from the upstream volume may be recovered to provide a higher pressure as a car is loaded from empty to load. For example, if the control valve pressure and volume pressure were 64 psi and the brake cylinder pressure was 38 psi empty load, as the car is loaded, the brake cylinder pressure would automatically increase to 52 psi or a minimum increase of 35% depending on actual brake cylinder pressure. Installation and adjustment is the same as the SC-1 equipment except that a plug screw need not be removed to determine empty load. The visual indicator may be used to perform this set-up function. Post-Installation Adjustment NOTE The car must be empty and positioned on straight level track in order to properly set the EL-60 Empty Load valve. 1. No set block is needed to properly set the EL-60 Empty Load Valve unless trucks are equipped with new springs, which requires the use of a 1/4" block to accommodate in-service settling of the springs. See NYAB document NYS-114 for full set-up instructions. 2. With the brakes fully released loosen the lock nuts, which secure the sensor arm adjusting screw. Screw the adjusting screw in as far as it will go. 3. Pull the sensor arm down as far as it will go and hold it in position. Screw the adjusting screw out until it just touches the truck side frame, gently return the sensor arm to the release position, then screw the adjusting screw out the required complete turns for the valve in the following table in order to remove the slack from the sensor arm. 60% Valve 50% Valve 40% Valve 4 complete turns 6 complete turns 8 complete turns INSTALLATION 4. Lock the adjusting screw in place using one lock nut below and one lock nut above the sensor arm. Be careful not to change the setting of the adjusting screw while securing the lock nuts. Types of Installation 5. To Check the Setting The EL-60 and EL-60/i may be installed in the same envelope as the S-1 sensor valve if the equalizing volume is mounted separately. The EL-60 is available in right and left hand versions. Left hand models have the equalizing volume connection on the left hand side of the pipe bracket when viewed from the front (the side with the nameplate). The EL-60/i is available in one configuration. In a foundation or truck mounted brake application where one empty load is required per control valve, the equalizing volume will be 375 cubic inches for 40%, 315 cubic inches for 50%, or 250 cubic inches for 60%. With a freight single car test device connected to the car, charge BP to 90 psi and install a 1" block under the sensor arm adjusting screw. When the flowrator ball drops below the top of the tube, move the device handle to position 5 and make a 20 to 30-psi brake pipe reduction, then slowly return the handle to position 3. Note that the Empty Load Indicator is not extended. Recharge BP and remove the block. When the flowrator ball drops below the top of the tube, move the device handle to position 5 and make another 20 to 30 psi brake pipe reduction, then slowly return the handle to position 3. Note that the indicator is extended, indicating that the system is providing empty car braking. If the indicator is not extended, readjust the adjusting screw by repeating steps 1 thru 5.
