Partners for Student Success Honors Algebra II Unit 4: Statistics & Probability In order for your child to be successful, it is important to be consistent with the mathematical vocabulary and processes that will be implemented this year in Honors Algebra II. You may find this resource helpful when supporting your child at home. Unit Concepts Concept Explanation Union A∪B The union (denoted by ∪) of two sets A & B is the set of elements in either A or B. Intersection A∩B The intersection (denoted by ∩) of two sets A & B is the set of all elements in both A and B. Complement “Prime” Everything in the universe outside of A; often thought of as “not A” Addition Rule Used to calculate the probability of the event "A or B", provided that we know the probability of A and the probability of B. Combinations/ Permutation Examples P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B). An ordering of objects. The number of permutations of r objects taken from a group of n distinct objects. Combinations- Order is not important. Permutations- Order is important. Cecil County Public Schools 2014-15 1 Honors Algebra II Unit 4 Partners for Student Success Independent Event Two events are independent if the occurrence of one has no effect on the occurrence of the other. Standard Normal Distribution “Bell Curve” Distribution of data that illustrates what percentage of data falls within a specified standard deviation of the mean. Standard Deviation σ The standard deviation is a measure of the spread of the data away from the mean. Z-Score The number z of standard deviations that a data value lies above or below the mean of the data set. Skewed Distribution Skewness is a measure of the extent to which a probability distribution "leans" to one side of the mean. Example: If a coin is tossed, the outcome of the first toss (heads or tails) has no effect on the outcome of the second toss. If A & B are both independent events, then the probability that both A and B occur is: For the data set x1, x2, …, xn, the standard deviation is given by: z xx , where x is the mean σ Additional Resources www.corestandards.org o View the current math standards.
