Watering Instructions for new trees
By Hand
1. Water once every 5-7 days depending on temperature. (windy and 90’s every 5 days)
2. Take the hose to the base of the tree place it on the ground so the water will soak the whole
root ball.
3. Turn hose on ¼ open so the water will slowly soak the root ball. If the water is running off close
the valve more. If the tree is on a slope start on the high side.
4. Leave the water run for approximately 12-15 minutes.
5. Repeat this from April to the end of September
6. October through March water once a month for a total of 30 minutes for a nice deep soaking.
Unless there is 4 inches of snow on the ground.
Watering Instructions for new trees
By Drip
1. Water once or twice a week. The trees need 3 drip lines and need 10 gallons of water per
week.
2. April through September deep soakings are the key 10 minutes every day does not
work for trees.
3. October through March. Take the hose to the base of the tree place it on the ground so the
water will soak the whole root ball. Water once per month
4. Turn hose on ¼ open so the water will slowly soak the root ball. If the water is running off
close the valve more. If the tree is on a slope start on the high side.
5. Leave the water run for approximately 30 minutes. Unless there is 4 inches of snow on the
ground the entire time. (rarely happens)

7. Please note: Some shrubs will show shock quickly do not panic, if the leaves burn simply adjust
your watering (i.e. If currently watering 2 times a week move to 3 times per week…3 times per
week move to 4). Approximately 2 weeks later new foliage will grow.

Watering instructions for new shrubs
Following are some general guidelines for ensuring success with newly planted shrubs. Extreme
weather conditions or unusual drainage situations may require some adjustments.
April thru September
Water 2-3 times per week
A #5 shrub needs 5-7 gallons of water per week—not per watering
If watering by hand—place hose at base of plant, at ¼ normal volume to allow water to slowly
seep into the soil. If on a slope, place hose on high side. Let water run for 5-7 minutes. If water runs
off, reduce hose volume and increase time.
If drip system, use 2-3 drippers evenly distributed around shrub. Note, as shrub grows, you will
need to move the drippers further from the center of the plant. The length of time you need to run the
drippers depends upon gallons per hour. You want about 2-3 gallons per plant, every 2-3 days.
Signs of stress or shock on newly planted material is not uncommon. If leaves burn, increase the
amount and/or frequency of watering. New foliage should emerge in about 2-3 weeks.
Symptoms of both over and underwatering can look very similar—yellowing, drooping, etc.
The only way to determine which situation you have is by checking the moisture level in the soil 3-4
inches below the surface at the edge of the rootball or by the drippers. Do this before watering. If
moist wait a day or two and check again.
October thru March
Water once or twice a month with the hose at a slow trickle for about 15 minutes to allow a
deep soaking. If there are four or more inches of snow on the ground for the majority of the month, it
may not be necessary to water that month.

A 6’ evergreen or 2” deciduous tree needs about 10 -20 gallons of water per week.
