To formulate criterion for climate proofing of private
agricultural investments in developing countries
Specific objectives:
Research area: Preliminary
discussions with local partners and
local Finnish Embassy suggested the
Niassa province (north) as an area
with several PAI including
investments on agriculture, biofuels
and forest plantations
1. Mapping of private agricultural investments in
Mozambique (PTT-UEM)
2. Studying changes in livelihoods and availability of
ES in the neighbourhood of selected investment
sites (PTT-UEM)
3. Evaluating the effect of selected PAI on the
Adaptive Capacity of local communities to CC
(VITRI-UEM)
4. Estimating the change in carbon stocks as a result
of land use change and the reallocation of local
communities to new areas (VITRI-UEM)
Expected outcomes:
2. Studying changes in livelihood
and availability of ES:
•Survey topics (structured interview):
• Demographic background
• Means of livelihood
• Perceived impacts of PAI on
livelihood
• Perceived impacts of CC on
livelihood, and adaptation
strategies
• Perceptions related to changes
in ecosystem services
• Identification of the livelihood
resources most important to
climate adaptation (CRISTAL)
• Provide a better understanding of real costs &
benefits of private agricultural investments (PAI)
• Quantification of the impact on the adaptive
capacity of communities
• Identification of key factors affecting adaptive
capacity
• Policy suggestions in relation to the current legal
and institutional framework

3. Evaluating the effect of selected
PAI on the AC of local
communities
• Use of CRISTAL V. 5
(http://www.iisd.org/cristaltool/)
• Using the information collected
during the livelihoods analysis
1. Mapping of PAI: A similar exercise
as the one prepared by the DECIDE
project in Lao PDR. Selection of
specific research sites will be based
on the following criteria:
• Size of investment
• Accessibility
• Type of investment
• Presence of similar sites to be used
as reference points

4. Change in carbon stocks as a
result of land use change &
reallocation of local communities
• Above ground + below ground +
soil carbon
• Different methodologies in different
land uses
• May require preparation of own
allometric functions
