Dear Parent/Guardian,
We are excited to announce that this year we are going to have a chess team
here at Southwest Middle School. We have teamed up with Polk Scholastic Chess to
offer tournaments that will be held at Highland Park Church of the Nazarene, Family
Ministries Building, 4730 Lakeland Highlands Road, Lakeland, FL 33813. The 2014 –
2015 tournament season fees will be $35.00 per player. The schedule this year is as
follows:
Tournament 1 – October 25, 2014
Tournament 2 – November 15, 2014
Tournament 3 – December 13, 2014
Tournament 4 – January 10, 2015
Championship – March 21, 2015 (Must have played 12 of the 16 rounds to qualify for the Championship)
All players are responsible for their own transportation to and from the
tournament location. The team/player check-in time is 8:15 – 8:30 a.m. sharp.
Students are expected to follow all rules of Southwest Middle School whether at school
or at a chess tournament.
This is a Chess Team so it is expected that all players know how to play chess.
Chess practice will be held every Thursday in E3 at SWMS from 4:10 until 4:45 p.m.
The first practice begins, Thursday, September 25th. Parents (Guardians) should pick
up their child after practice by 5:00 p.m. at the very latest.
For your convenience and benefit players registration will be done online
only (deadline is Sept. 27th). No paper registration for players will be accepted. For
registration and payment go to www.polkscholasticchess.com. To reserve your spot,
please sign this paper if you are interested in the Chess Team by Thursday, September
25th and give it to Mr. Long in E3. If you have any questions, please see Mr. Long in E3

By signing this you are agreeing to allow your child to join the chess team and you are
responsible for transportation to and from the chess tournaments.
