Wonder Tale Sleep Set competition
Five design teams are participating in this year's Sleep Set built-room competition. Drawing on the essence of
fairy tales and folklore around the world, The Studio at Harrods, Areen Hospitality, Shaun Clarkson ID, Oliver
Heath Design in collaboration with Interface Hospitality, and Anita Rosato Interior Design will each weave
their own story into a guestroom concept that touches on the human condition while playing with
perceptions, to engage and nurture the guest in new ways.
Each will explain their response to the brief during a conference session, with the winning team announced on
24 November at 7pm in the Sleep Bar. The judges for Sleep Set 2015 are Katy Ghahremani, Partner at MAKE
Architects, Erik Nissen Johansen, Founder and Creative Director of Stylt Trampoli and Javier Hortal, Director

Sleep Bar
Re-imagined afresh each year, the Sleep Bar (in association with Sleeper) is the social hub of the event, and
hospitality design specialists Conran+Partners are harnessing of the power of storytelling through wonder
tales with a design inspired by Lewis Carroll's timeless Alice's Adventure in Wonderland. The design team
aims to challenge the familiar concept of what a bar should be and visitors can expect to see "a kind of hypercharged reality, with some unexpected perspectives, reflections and upside-down-ness!" says Tina Norden,
project director.

Convergence
A series of installations and conference presentations at Sleep will examine the opportunities presented by
shared spaces within modern hotels. As hospitality lifestyle brands surge in popularity, lobby and bedroom
concepts are melding work, relaxation and play. Challenging the norms in spatial use are three leading
architecture and design studios that will investigate how combining apparently contradictory influences can
result in bold innovation.
Multidisciplinary practice Il Prisma Group, which has pioneered a revolution in attitude towards how we use
interior space with its mission to redefine habits, will create the Social Harbour. This is a refuge for new
nomads, digital travellers and smart workers – a place to express individuality as well as seek like-minded
tribes. Described as an inside/outside experience, it allows users choice to create a personalised space where
they are supported, rather than dictated to, by design and technology that can transform the environment.
The Manser Practice, in association with exhibitor Elegant Clutter, will consider the meaning of convergence
when opposites are fused to create something new and unexpected. "Exciting things happen when the
functional and fanciful merge", says Jane Lawrence, Director of Interior Design. "This is particularly true in
hotel design where it is important that the hotel fulfils the guest’s practical needs but also stimulates the
senses."

International architecture and design studio Perkins+Will will examine the rise of the frictionless office as
improved mobile connectivity leads to more flexible work environments. As the office turns into an
increasingly abstract concept, hotels are emerging default workplaces for many professionals. With experience
in hospitality, fit-out and workplace consulting, the team will identify the potential opportunities in this
behavioural shift and how to optimise them in hotels.
In addition to exploring the Convergence installations, visitors can gain further insight from the designers on
day two of the Sleep Conference when they each present the thinking behind their proposals.
