FRANK BEAMER QUOTES POSTGAME VIRGINIA TECH AT PURDUE On what worked so well offensively “I think we’re going to look back and appreciate this win. I think this is one of those that can get us rolling. Our offense was efficient for the most part, but we still had a few passes we should have hit and had a few we should have caught. Defensively, we’ll look back and see. I think we got better. We did some good things in the kicking game. We had some nice returns. “This was a game against a good team. They’re getting better. So I think this is going to be a good win when we look back on it.” On getting scores from all three phases “That was big. We always talk about whoever is on the field has a chance to get a score. That happened today, and that was pretty special.” On Brenden Motley getting him on his blindside “Any time your quarterback is getting blindsided, it’s a concern. We’ve got some offensive linemen that I wished were a little more experienced, but they’re getting experience each week, so hopefully, we won’t have a back-side hit next week.” On Brenden Motley’s overall performance “I think he’s doing well. I like the kid. I like how he’s handling things. He doesn’t flinch. I’ve used that word before, but he doesn’t. He hangs right in there, and he’s a good quarterback for this football team.” On starting Adonis Alexander “It was the package we were in there in the beginning, but he’s a guy who’s got talent. He’s size, and he’s got speed. We want to get him in on some more special teams. We want to keep bringing him along. I think he’s got a good future.” On seeing something in Purdue’s punt game “We’re always trying to block it, and Wisconsin, I believe, blocked one on them last year. We tried to do a couple of things that they had done. We’ve got to get it, though. When you get back there, all you’ve got to do is block the kick. It looked like to me that it was right there a couple of times. You got to go to stage 2 – one is getting there and two is blocking the kick. We’ll work on that.” On Sean Huelskamp’s performance “I think he probably did well. We always talk about him being a Jack Tyler, and I think that’s about what he started out with today. I thought he was pretty solid.” On stopping Purdue’s running backs “Our first thing from a defensive standpoint is to stop the run. We wanted to make them one-dimensional, and when you do that, you gain an advantage. So that’s going to be a priority every week.” On inserting the first-team offense back in the game in the fourth quarter “I was trying to win a football game. When it gets down to 20 points, and an onside kick and another long pass, and all of a sudden … I’ve seen things happen. So we put our first offensive linemen in there and we were going to run the football. When the second group gets a chance to get in there, they better get going. If not, we’re going to get the first group in there.” On all the penalties “Penalties are upsetting. We’ve had too many. We had a lot last week, and we’ll look at it. Those are yards you have to make up. There is no sense in it.” On whether he was surprised that Bucky Hodges drew single coverage “We’re getting to the point where it gets tough. I think our two outside receivers are very good. You put Malleck in there, and that’s a tough guy to cover. It’s not just Bucky. We’ve got a group of receivers that makes it tough to double up.”
