Teachers & Classroom Use
The familiar scenarios in Be Safe Around Water provide an engaging way for students to address
personal behaviours and strategies to remain safe in potentially unsafe situations (around water), and
knowing who or where to go for help in the community (links to Health & Physical Education, WA
Curriculum).
The game has a scientific knowledge base, and as such gently introduces students to notions of hazards
around water safety. With colourful icons and fun animation Be Safe Around Water guides students in
problem-solving through informed personal decisions and demonstrates where people use science in their
daily lives to understand the effects of their actions and to solve problems which relate directly to their lives
(links to Science, WA Curriculum).
This game could be used to ascertain prior knowledge of the students understanding of unsafe situations
around water, and gently introduce students to this subject. This game could also be used to support and
consolidate learning of water safety, being alert and aware of unsafe situations, leading to appropriate
personal behaviours and strategies to remain safe.
The game engages the player in an educational and interactive way. Suggested uses :
• load it to individual tablets for singular/pair play to promote a class discussion on water safety
• load to class IWB/Smartboard, as a learning reward for the entire class. The game involves the
identification of eleven hazards, which could be the responsibility of various students in the class, and
observed by others. Achieve ‘Safety Star’ status for the whole class.
