resources and supervision.
Job Purpose
To ensure that pupils are:

well-supervised and safe during their lunch breaks;

provided with high-quality, creative and safe play equipment;

given the support and guidance to play safely outside (or inside in the case of ‘wet play’);

able to enjoy their play times through the implementation and supervision of games and play
activities; and

relaxed and refreshed in order to fully engage with afternoon learning.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Encouraging positive and creative play:

Keep a record of school play equipment, ensuring that it is in good condition and safe to use.

Source and order new play equipment and activities based on feedback from children, SMSAs
and the SLT.

Oversee use of the PlayPod including opening the pod and creatively distributing the ‘spare
parts’, overseeing pupils’ play and ensuring that it is tidied up quickly and efficiently.

Set out and tidy-up play activities to ensure that pupils make the most out of lunchtime
resources.

Actively engage in creative play with pupils, paying particular attention to children who seem to
be struggling to involve themselves in play with their peers.

Monitor and coordinate play rotas (football pitch, etc.).

Give advice and support to members of the SMSA team with regards to encouraging and
supervising positive play and role model these qualities at all times.
2. General SMSA responsibilities:

Accompany pupils to the dining halls from their classrooms in a safe and orderly manner.

Supervise pupils as they eat and encourage them to finish their meal if necessary.

Help pupils tidy away their food and go outside to play (or back to their classrooms in the case
of ‘wet play’).

Supervise pupils’ play times in line with the Lead SMSA’s instruction, ensuring that they are
engaged and safe at all times.

Respond to any behaviour concerns in line with the school’s Behaviour Policy.

Administer first aid where appropriate.

Report any concerns about pupils’ eating, behaviour etc. to the relevant staff member.

Promote positive behaviour and constructive play at all times.
