8th Annual Bridgewater-Raritan Basketball Camp
Camp Notes
Monday, August 1st, 2016
Bridgewater-Raritan Varsity Head Coach: Gene McAteer
Welcome to Basketball Camp
o Pay attention to detail: Personal responsibility and accountability are expectations
at basketball camp. This means you stay with your group, pay attention to
instructions, and be ready to act.
o The ability to listen attentively and focus on instruction is expected from all
campers of all ages.
o Listening skills & eye contact
Anticipate what the coach will say. Guess what is coming next. Then
listen intently to see if you were right.
Listen to what your coaches tell you & watch the demonstrations by the
high school & college players. Be ready to try the drills when you get the
chance.
Be alert & ready to do what you are asked. This way less time is wasted
and you will have more time to play basketball.
If you listen & try new things, you have the opportunity to learn and grow
as a player. The key to success however, is to work on your own when you
leave camp. This is how you become a better basketball player.
Monday Morning Stations
o Ball handling with 1 ball with Coach TJ Driscoll
Players will practice ball handling in a stationary position with right and
left hand
Ankle, waist, and shoulder height dribbles
In and out move
Crossover
Rolling ball front to back on the side of their body
Players need to work on keeping their head up to see the floor
o V – Cut Shooting with Coach Dan Banz
To set up to this drill you need two lines on each wing two balls in each
line first player in one of the lines does not have a ball.
The player without the ball will make a v-cut by going down to the block
and plant on one foot and pop back up to the elbow.
Once they are at the elbow they will receive a pass from the opposite
elbow for a catch and shoot.
The shooter gets their own rebound and switches lines passing the ball to
the next player in the new line without a ball.

The passer will then make a v-cut for a catch and shoot and the drill
continues
Panther Shooting with Coach Addison Rielly
Two teams shoot from the elbow first to a certain makes wins; played at
the end of camp daily
Give and Go Lay-ups with Coach Megan O’Hara
Players had two lines at each wing like in V-Cut Shooting
There will be two or three in one line
The line with other the ball will have the first player flash to the elbow
with their hands ready to receive the pass
The player with the ball will pass to the flashing player and move towards
them as if they were going to receive the ball back
That player will then plant their foot that is further from the basket and cut
back door
The player with the ball will deliver a bounce pass for a lay-up
The drill was done on both sides so players worked on their right and left
handed lay-ups
Attack the Basket with Coach Sterling White
Players will start at half court and dribble in to the 3 point line
At the 3 point line they will make a dribble move and attack the basket
The player will want to change speed and direction with the dribble move
as to get their defender out of position and beat them to the basket.
Friar Drill with Coach Alden Christensen
-The Friar Drill starts with a regular two on one fast break from
half court. The shooter then runs to half court, they will be the
defender in the next two vs. one.

Half Court Friar Drill
-The player in the corner will throw a pass to half court and both
corners will run to half court.
- The two players involved the first 2 on 1 that did not shoot will
then go to the corners to be the outlets for the next group
-The player who receives the pass at half court throws a cross
court pass to the other player to start the next two on one.
-The defensive player can jump the pass so the offensive players
must be aware of what the defense is doing and not throw a
weak pass or a pass without looking.
o 2 Ball Shooting with Coach Mitchell D’Elia
www.brbasketballcamp.com
Two lines start under the basket where the lane line meets the baseline.
One line has the ball in the front of the line the other has it with the second
player.
The first player runs to the block and across the lane as if the block on the
court is a screener.
They will make it across the lane and receive a pass for a lay-up from the
opposite line.
As the player makes the pass they will run behind the shooter in the same
fashion to the other side for a lay-up.
The rebounder gives the ball to the opposite line they came from and goes
to the back of the line.
Set a goal at each spot to make then take a step back to continue, the hash
marks on the lane, the elbows, and three point line are good indicators in
which you catch and shoot from.
Continue to step back as you reach your goal. You can add onto the end of
the drill with pump fakes and get to the rim for a lay-up, jab and go for a
lay-up, or rip through and go for a lay-up with different finishes like a
power lay-up, one foot right and left lay-ups, inside hand lay-up or reverse
lay-ups
o Spin Out, Pivot, Shot with Coach Tony Calorusso
Players start under the basket with a ball
They will spin it out to around the elbow area
They will jump stop when catching the ball so they do not establish a pivot
foot on the landing
The players will first pivot to the inside for a jumper
Players will then pivot inside shot fake and attack the basket
Players will do the same thing pivoting to the outside
Monday Morning’s Contest Contest is 1 on 1
o
o
The 1 on 1 contest helps us create even teams for fair and competitive games
Offensive Teaching points
Be in triple-threat position ready to drive or shoot. Use a shot fake or jab step to
try and get the defense off balance or out of good position. As often as you can,
drive the ball to the basket and get a close to the rim as possible.
Use your jab step to help get an open shot. More often now, players are being
taught to jab directly at the defender, directly between their legs to illicit a
reaction from the defense.
Jab step then drive to the basket – {JAB & GO}
Jab step to back your defender off then shoot your jump shot - {JAB &
JUMPER}
Jab step then step across and go to the basket –{JAB & CROSS}

Coach Justin Matisak’s Drill of the Day
Get Back Transition Drill
Players divide into two teams. Black team starts with a rebounder (1), a defender (5), an outlet
player (2), an attacking guard (3) and a player at half court ready to transition (4). The red team
starts with a defender (x1), a trailing defender (x2), an outlet player (x4), and attacking guard
(x5) and a player at half court ready to transition (x3) in a two on one situation.
Player 1 will outlet the basketball to player 2 who will advance the ball to player 3 without a
dribble. Player 3 will attack player x1 with player 4 for a 2 on 1. Player (x2) will sprint back to
help defend.
One shot only in the drill. The defensive rebounder will outlet the ball then follow to the line.
The other defender will stay on defense again. The offensive player that shoots will sprint back
on defense. The other offensive player assumes the position at half court. The drill continues to
run with an outlet pass and advance pass and attack.
Monday Afternoon’s Contest X - Out
o This contest improves a players pivoting, ability to push the ball out, and finishing
at the rim with a lay-up
o The player will start on one of the two elbows
o The player has 45 seconds to make as many lay-ups as possible, make or miss
they will gather their rebound and dribble to the opposite elbow then pivot and go
back to the basket to attempt another lay-up
o Pro Contest 2 Ball X – Out
Same drill however the player must dribble two basketballs to the elbow
and in for the lay-up
www.brbasketballcamp.com
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016
Tuesday Morning’s Contest is the Mikan Drill
o The Mikan Drill is named after NBA great – George Mikan who was a Hall of
Fame pro player in the 1940’s & 1950’s. George excelled at left hand & right
hand baby hook shots around the basket.
o The modern version of the Mikan Drill features continuous righty & lefty lay-ups.
Players must quickly move and get a good angle so that they may bank the ball in
high & soft off the square.
o Make or miss, players rebound the shot and step through to the other side.
o Again, get a good angle so that you are not attempting a shot from directly under
the rim.
o In the contest, players strive to score as many lay-ups as possible in a 30 or 45
seconds
Bridgewater-Raritan Varsity Head Coach: Gene McAteer
o
Free Throw Fast Break
Set up as if the defending team in a free throw situation
Player top of key (1) – On the missed shot will run to the sideline getting their back to the
sideline so they can see the floor when they catch the pass
Players on the lane (2) and (3) will loop to the outside staying close to the sidelines as in
the previous drill
Player 4 will sprint the court directly to the rim
Player 5 will rebound and trail the play
Player one has multiple options kick it up to 2 or 3 for lay-ups or catches on the wing
www.brbasketballcamp.com
If 2 or 3 catch on the wing they can look for an entry pass to player 4 running
the court or take a jumper on the wing
They can also wait for the trailing player 5 for a lay-up
Player 1 can attack with a speed dribble into the front court
If they choose this option they can entry pass to the 4
Player 1 can kick it to 2 or 3 on the wing or streaking in for a lay-up
Or they can wait for player 5 trailing the play diving to the basket
Coach Justin Matisak’s Drill of the Day
Iowa State Speed Transition Drill
as seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VT5-ewrRoM
This Drill works on outlet passing, running the floor, and finishing at the rim. We set a lower
goal for our campers than in the video. Iowa State has been a very successful college program
over the last half decade with Coach Fred Hoiberg now coaching the Chicago Bulls.
Tuesday Afternoon’s Contest is Partner Hot Shot
o In hot shot, players have 45 seconds to make as many shots as possible from
different locations on the floor
o One camper will shoot and get their own rebound
o They will then pass to their teammate for a shot
o Each location is worth a different value
Block is worth 2, elbow 3, foul shot 4, and three pointer with 5
Players must shoot one shot from each block, one from each
elbow, a foul shot, and a three before they can move around freely
They can not shoot the same point value shot twice in a row
o The partners will report their score to the coach and the highest tandems will
advance to the finals on Friday.
Bridgewater-Raritan Varsity Head Coach: Gene McAteer and Junior Varity Coach Steve Kline
2 on 1
Offensive Focus
o Spacing the floor
o Attack the defender, make them make a decision as whom to
guard
o Look to score, don’t pass for no reason
o You can’t pass 3 or 4 times, at that point the defense will be back
already
o Make quick decisions
o Finish at the rim
Defensive Focus
o Get back and protect the rim
o Play out from under the rim, don’t try to pick up at the foul line
it will lead to a lay-up
o Jab at the offensive, try to make them pick the ball up
o Get them to settle for a jump shot and box out

Wednesday’s Teaching Stations
3 Line Passing into a 2 on 1 with Coach Mitchell D’Elia
Drill starts with 3 lines on the baseline one under the basket the other two where the
three point line meets the baseline. The player in the middle has a ball and will pass
back and forth to each wing player as they make their way up the floor. Once they
reach half court and the ball is in one of the wing players hands the two outside
players will attack the middle player in a 2 on 1 scenario. The players will play until
the offense scores or the defense gets a rebound
Ball Handling on the Move with Coach Megan O’Hara
Players will work on their ball handling as a group. There will be a cone half way
across the court in front of each line. Players will line up on the sideline and will first
dribble full speed with their right hand up and back then hand off to their partner to
go. Next they will speed dribble up and back with their left hand. Moving on players
will now perform a series of dribble moves at the cone at center court, players need to
focus on changing speed and direction to make their dribble move effective. Players
will speed dribble to the cone at center court and perform a crossover dribble get to
the other sideline then back performing a crossover again. Following the crossover
players will work on their between the legs dribble, the between the legs dribble
allows players to protect the ball with their body. Following the between the legs
dribble players will do a behind the back dribble at the cone. Another move to work
on is a back dribble to a crossover, players will speed dribble to the cone the take two
dribbles back protecting the ball with their body, then crossover and explode passed
the cone. Other dribble moves to practice not included during ball handling session.
Spin move, it is important to keep your hand on top of the ball, young players tend to
put their hands under the ball resulting in a carry. Players can work on a hesitation
dribble, when approaching the cone players will slow and stutter step to get the
defender off balance then explode around the defender, perform this with their left
and right hands. Another dribble move is an in-and-out dribble up and back with their
right hand then with their left hand. Not all ball handling drills done in the station due
to time constraints, but all moves should be practiced by players on a regular basis
Star Passing with Coach Steelo “The G.O.A.T” White
Player 1 starts with ball at the right block. Player 2 is at the three point line between
the wing and top of the key. Player 3 is in the corner opposite player 2. Player 4 is in
opposite corner as player 3. Player 5 is in a similar position as player 2 on other wing.
There will be a line under the basket behind player one. Player 1 passes to player 2
then follows their pass to the right. Player 2 passes to player 3 then follows their pass
to the right. Player 3 passes to player 4 and follows to the right. Player 5 cuts the
basket as player 4 throws a bounce pass for a lay-up. Players must meet the pass not
just stand and wait for it. After the lay-up is made or missed the next player gets the
ball before it hits the ground and starts immediately.
Rebounding With Coach Addison Reilly
Players line up in a free throw situation. There is 1 offensive player and 1 defensive
player on each side of the lane. Coach misses the shot the defense will box out and go
after the ball. If the offense gets the ball the defensive play will do push-ups
www.brbasketballcamp.com
Cougar Shooting with Coach Dan Banz
Players line up at the baseline directly under the basket. Every player has a basketball
except the first player. The first player will run out to a spot on the floor and turn
having there hands up ready for a pass. They will catch and shoot and get their own
rebound and bring it to the back of the line. The passer will then sprint to a spot for a
catch and shoot. The drill continues for a set time or until the players make a certain
amount of shots. Add one dribble pull-ups to the drill to continue to work on different
aspects of the game
V-Cut Shooting Attacking the Basket with Coach Mark Beida
To set up to this drill you need two lines on each wing two balls in each line first
player in one of the lines does not have a ball. The player without the ball will make a
v-cut by going down to the block and plant on one foot and pop back up to the elbow.
Once they are at the elbow they will receive a pass from the opposite elbow for a
catch and shoot. The shooter gets their own rebound and switches lines passing the
ball to the next player in the new line without a ball. The passer will then make a vcut for a catch, rip through, and then one dribble to attack the rim.
Argentina Passing Drill with Coach TJ Driscoll
Put a player in each corner of the court, a player on both sidelines positioned at center
court, and to right under the basket on the baseline. The two balls start with two
players standing opposite each other. The pass the ball to the person to the right of
them and then exchanges places with the player opposite of them…run! The ball
continues around the court after each player passes he runs to the opposite spot i.e. one center court sideline to the other. Make players stop in the middle of the drill and
switch direction the ball is passed or the type of pass
Drive and Kick with Coach Alden Christensen
There will be two lines at half court, one on the left and one on the right. Balls will be
on the left side to start. The player will dribble in to the three point line and make a
dribble move to get into the lane. They will jump stop in the lane. The opposite line
will drift down the court from the half court line to the wing with the initial dribble.
As the ball handler attacks the lane they will fade to the corner for a kick pass for a
jumper.
Wednesday Morning’s Contest is Hot Shot
o In hot shot, players have 45 seconds to make as many shots as possible from different
locations on the floor
o Each location is worth a different value
Block is worth 2, elbow 3, foul shot 4, and three pointer with 5
Players must shoot one shot from each block, one from each elbow, a foul shot,
and a three before they can move around freely
o They cannot shoot the same point value shot twice in a row
They will shoot the lay-up with one hand one ball
www.brbasketballcamp.com
Coach Justin Matisak’s Drill of the Day 4 on 4 Transition
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tt_u1RV4wA
Players will line up 4 v 4 with the offense on the baseline at the three point lines and lane lines.
The defense will line up at the three point line extended facing the baseline.
A coach will throw the ball to an offensive player on the baseline, the defender across from that
player will run and touch the baseline as the other three play defense.
The goal is for the offense to covert in a 4 on 3 transition opportunity. If they don’t they will play
4 v 4.
Unlike the video, after players go on way we will pause the drill and set up flipping the offense
and defense.
Wednesday Afternoon’s Contest is 2 on 2
o 2 on 2 basketball helps teach certain aspects of the game
Teams were selected at random in each age group
If the offense scores they stay and accumulate wins, if the defense gets a
stop they will then go to offense and a new team will come on the court
o Offensive Focus
Moving without the ball whether it be a basket cut or a v-cut to get
yourself open for a pass.
Pick and roll basketball which also includes the pick and pop game.
o Defensive focus
On ball defense and denial defense
“Bumping the cutter” or not allowing the offensive player to cut in front of
you for an easy lay-up
Communication on ball screen defense whether to switch, hedge, go
under, or fight over the screen
Thursday, August 4th, 2016
Thursday Morning’s Contest is Ray Allen Corner Shooting
o Players will have 45 seconds to shoot and make as many corner jumpers as they can.
o There will be a passer at the foul line to deliver a pass to the shooter.
o The shooter will back pedal to the sideline and run in to the corner so they are
stepping into every shot they take.
o Two rebounders will be under the basket like in the Steph Curry shooting contest.
Bridgewater-Raritan Varsity Head Coach: Gene McAteer
2 Line Passing
o Players will line up the distance of the lane apart
o Players will pass back and forth while running the length of the court and back
o They will execute different passes
Chest
Bounce
Alternate Chest and Bounce
www.brbasketballcamp.com
3 Line Passing
o 3 line passing drill in which the players line up one in the middle of the key and
the other two on the wings. The player in the middle will pass back and forth to
the wing alternating back and forth.
3 Man Weave
o The drill starts with three lines on both baselines, one directly in the center of the
court, and the other two on the wings. Run the 3 Man Weave with the players
passing the ball to the wing and replacing the wing player by running behind them
as the wing player passes across court to the opposite wing and follows their pass.
The player who receives the ball at the foul line area will jump stop and throw a
bounce pass to the cutting player for a lay-up. The player who threw the pass and
the third player will receive a pass from the next players on the wings on the
baseline for a jump shot. They will get their own rebound and pass to the next
players on the baseline.
5 Man Weave
o One player is centered on the baseline, a player on both wings, and a player in
each corner. The ball starts at the top and the passes to one of the closer wing
players and follows his pass but instead of like a 3 man weave and replacing
behind the player he/she passes to they will replace behind both players on that
side of the court. The player who receives the first pass then passes to the opposite
interior wing player and follows their pass behind both players. The players in the
corners are the next to receive passes and as the first two passes are thrown they
begin to move towards the center of the court to cut down the distance of the pass.
Once the players in the corners receive the pass and make the respected pass they
will follow their pass as well and replace behind both players on the opposite side
of the court.
Coach Justin Matisak’s Drill of the Day
Jayhawk Shooting
Three lines under each basketball, one under the basket, the other two by the three point line
The starting side there will be one ball in the middle line in the first players hands and a ball in
each of the side lines in the second players hands
On the opposite end the two players on the outside lines have a ball
The first side players will run a three man weave, after the pass they will run behind the player
they passed to
When they get to the opposite foul line area the player with the ball will make a bounce pass and
the wing will go in for a lay-up
The passer will get a pass from the baseline for a jump shot, the player not passing or shooting
the lay-up will still follow their pass and get a pass from the baseline for a jump shot
The player in the line under the basket will get the ball out of the net and start back the other way
with the two passers from the baseline
The drill continues, players need to focus on catching and passing without traveling
www.brbasketballcamp.com
Bridgewater-Raritan Varsity Head Coach: Gene McAteer
Passing Races against Coach McAteer and Coach Matisak – make games
competitive by playing against another duo or try to get two basketballs
with one player
One hand catch and pass
o Players start with the basketball in their right hand
o They pass it catching it only with their left hand
o They then pass with their left hand back to their partners
right hand
o Only catching the ball with one hand
One hand catch switch and pass

to their partners left hand
o Upon catching the ball that player will pass it from their
left hand to their right hand then pass
o Every catch is with their left hand and pass is with their
right hand
o Do the same thing except catch the pass with the right and
pass with the left
Figure 8 into pass
o Partners perform a figure 8 between their legs by passing
the basketball between their legs from their right hand to
their left then wrap the ball around their left leg and pass
between their legs left to right and then pass with their right
hand
o The pass should be a scoop pass with a little speed on it
o Partners catch and perform the figure 8 again
o Race to 10 or 20 or until two basketballs end up with one
partner
Thursday Afternoon’s Contest is Swish

o Championship Friday
Friday afternoon we have our contest finals as well as our Panther Shooting
Tournament. Each league will have the top 12 campers, based on results from
the week, compete to win the competition finals in a 1 on 1 Tournament, X –
Out, Mikan, and Hotshot.
The Panther Shooting Tournament is a bracket tournament in which every
team will compete. Each round will be played to a different make total until
we crown a champion
o Winning, Losing, sportsmanship, and character…
Enthusiasm is a great thing; however, make sure that it is in a positive manner.
Winning and losing is something that applies to all players of all skill levels
because no matter how good you are, eventually you are going to lose at
something.
How you behave after a win or loss shows a lot about your character. You
should strive to win and lose with class and style; because how you act reveals
a lot about who you are as a person.
These characteristics are essential not just in basketball but in life as well. It is
important to be respectful in victory and defeat to the opponent. It is easy to
shake hands in victory but it shows more when you are able to after to defeat.
Friday’s Teaching Stations
Passing Tag with Coach
Passing Tag is a game that incorporates all of the vital components of being a
solid offensive basketball team. Players must be able to pass, catch, &
communicate with one another while running, sliding, & moving at game speed.
The objective for the team with the ball is to tag the other team’s players with the
ball which would result in that particular player being eliminated! Play continues
until all five members of the other team have been tagged out. The team that does
not have the ball must “run away” and avoid being tagged out for as long as they
possibly can. The game is played in the half court. No dribbling is allowed. And,
you may not throw the ball at the other team. Once you catch the ball, you may
pivot but that is all the movement that is allowed as you stretch and try to tag
people out. In tagging the other team, you must maintain solid possession of the
ball. If you drop the ball while trying to tag out the other team, the person is safe.
One of the keys to success is for the team with the ball to pick one player and
surround that one guy. Try to trap each person near the sideline and pass the ball
more quickly than the player can move. To make the game competitive keep track
of which team tags out the other squad in less time.
Competitive Team Shooting from the Corner with Coach
Players will play panther shooting as we do at the end of each day however this
time the shot will be from the corner. Coaches may add a shot fake one dribble
pull-up for older campers to work on different game shots.
www.brbasketballcamp.com
Dribble Knockout with Coach
Every player will have a basketball. There will be a designated area in which
players need to stay within to stay in the game. Players must maintain their
dribble while trying to knock other player’s basketball outside the designated
area. If the player loses their dribble while trying to knock someone out they are
out of the game. You must maintain a dribble at tall times. As players get knocked
out the designated area will become smaller. Players can not kick or throw their
ball at another ball in an attempt to get someone out.
Make Miss with Coach
Each Camper gets to take a shot they choose. The rest of the group picks if they
will make it or miss it. If they guess correctly they do not have to do anything. If
incorrect they will have to do a fitness exercise.
Around the World Shooting with Coach
Players will shoot from the block, each hash mark, the elbow, the foul line, the
opposite hash marks, opposite block and a three pointer. They will get to shoot
until they miss. First player to make it around the world wins.
Competitive Team Shooting from the Wing with Coach
Players will play panther shooting as we do at the end of each day however this
time the shot will be from the wing. Coaches may add a shot fake one dribble
pull-up for older campers to work on different game shots.
Make it, Take it with Coach
Two teams on the elbows. Each team has 6 cones on their side of the baseline.
Players shoot. If they make it they take a cone from the other team’s side. If they
miss they go to the back of the line. First team with all 12 cones wins.
Dribble Races with Coach
Campers will have to complete a dribble race before the other team does. If they
do not they will have to do a fitness exercise
