This course explores the historical development and
contemporary conceptions of Latina feminist theory in
the United States from 1960s to the present. Students
will be introduced to foundational writings in Latina
feminist theories. We will consider how scholars have
theorized a Latina feminist tradition. We will explore
how the shared and divergent experiences of Latinas in
the US have contributed to the development of the
body of Latina feminist theories.
We consider Latina theorizing around the subject of the
intersectionality of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality
with a focus on how Latinas have critiqued and reshaped the fields of ethnic and gender studies in US.
Topics include, but are not limited to: triple oppressions
theory, identity politics, mestiza consciousness, Latina
subjectivity, and lesbian identities.
