Asset Management and Investment Planning Group
Purpose
The prime purpose of Asset Management and Investment Planning is to realise value from
assets and achieve organisational strategic objectives. As a discipline, Asset Management has
been developed by asset rich industries and will shortly be codified through new standards to
be published by the International Standards Organisation (ISO).
Asset Management principles and best practice when applied to the management of medical
equipment can unlock significant benefits including; the adoption of optimum medical equipment
technologies, greater financial sustainability, enhanced risk management and optimal decision
making – including when to replace aging equipment, how to finance acquisition, and how and
when to dispose of medical equipment.
NHS Supply Chain is developing an Asset Management Blueprint which will provide manuals,
guidance and decision support techniques specifically for the NHS to support trust’s manage
their medical equipment and the realise the benefits that this can bring.
Definition of a Consultation Group: A group of finance, maintenance, procurement and clinical
experts brought together by NHS Supply Chain to provide input, expertise and guidance on key
issues, ensuring that the development of the Asset Management Blueprint meets the needs of
our customers, the NHS.
Vision: By drawing upon advice and input from the Consultation Group, NHS Supply Chain
aims to produce an Asset Management Blueprint that aligns with best practice and meets the
specific requirements of the NHS.
The ideal candidate for this Consultation would match the following criteria:
Expertise – knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:

Finance (Finance Directors / Senior Finance Managers), planning, procurement and financial
management / accountancy of medical equipment acquisition.

Electro-Biomedical Engineers (Heads or Deputy Heads): Maintenance, repair, operation, risk
analysis and management of medical equipment.

Procurement: Planning and procurement of medical equipment.

Medical Equipment Utilisation / Operation and disposal within a hospital setting – including
equipment tracking and deployment, disposal and / or the use medical equipment in the
diagnosis and treatment of patients.
