Q2 2016 - Hope Through Health

Quarterly Progress Report
Q2 2016
10.1.2015-12.31.2015
Dear Friends,
The end of 2015 marked the completion of another successful year for Hope
Through Health and our partner organization, AED-Lidaw. In 2015, our organization
intensified our focus on quality, completing a series of targeted quality
improvement activities, and worked to improve access to quality healthcare
services for all individuals. Thanks to your support, we were able to expand our
services beyond HIV/AIDS care this year, through the launch of our Maternal and
Child Health Program. The initial results from this program, described on pages 4, 5,
and 6 of this report continue to be very encouraging.
Here are some highlights from the second quarter of fiscal year 2016:
•
•
Hope Through Health received five grants, including two renewals of funding
from the Browning Kimball Foundation and the Weyerhaeuser Family
Foundation. We began new partnerships with Child Relief International, Positive
Action Children’s Fund, and Vitol Foundation. We are deeply grateful for the
support of these and all of our partners for our work in Togo!
In its first five months, the Maternal and Child Health Program has surpassed all
targets. Through this program, high quality healthcare services have reached
94.7% of children under five and 71% of pregnant women in the communities
served. See page 4 for more exciting results from the Maternal and Child Health
Program.
We would not have been able to expand our impact and achieve these results
without your unwavering support. We are deeply grateful for your partnership,
which has allowed us to move ever closer to our vision of high quality healthcare
for all in the underserved nation of Togo.
As with all of our efforts, we welcome your feedback. Please feel free to reach out
to me or any member of our team with your questions or suggestions. We would
love to hear from you!
With gratitude,
Jennifer Schechter, MSW, MPH

A DAY IN THE LIFE:
MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM
COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER
In the morning, Reine wakes up early to
prepare breakfast for her family before
leaving the house with her youngest son,
Marveil, on her back. Yesterday she was
performing door-to-door active case
finding in one of the furthest villages in
her work zone when she found a child
with pneumonia. She treated the child
with amoxicillin, and now must return for
a follow up visit.
She greets acquaintances as she walks
through fields of corn, yams, and
peanuts. Since she carries her son on her
back, she transports her work supplies on
her head.
Reine carries her son, Marveil on her
back on her way to a home visit.
When she reaches the house of
the sick child she sees that the
little girl already looks
significantly better than the day
before. Reine discusses with the
mother and verifies that she
properly administered the
medicine yesterday and this
morning. She advises the mother
to contact Reine right away if the
child becomes more ill or if the
mother notices certain danger
signs.

After her successful follow up visit,
Reine stops by the house of a
pregnant woman that she
identified a few weeks ago. The
woman was scheduled for her first
prenatal consultation last week and
Reine wants to make sure that she
attended.
Reine checks the woman’s health
booklet to read any updates the
midwife may have written. She
discusses a birth plan with the
woman, helping her identify when
she will travel to the health center
to deliver, who will accompany her,
and what she will bring along.
Reine discusses prenatal care with a woman in
her home.
On her way home for lunch, Reine
is stopped by a father who
hurriedly shows her the way to his
house. His son has had a high fever
for three days and the father is
worried. Reine consults the child
and using a rapid test, determines
that he has malaria. She treats the
child for malaria and makes a note
in her book to return to his house
tomorrow for a follow up visit.
Finally, Reine returns home to care
for her own children and get a little
rest before her neighbors come
knocking on her door again in the
afternoon.
