DESCRIPTION: The game of volleyball for elementary Phy. Ed. Class is played on a rectangular court divided by a tightly stretched net. Teams consist of 4, 5, or 6 players. Front row players start on the green line and the back row player start on the yellow line. Before the back right person serves they will say their team score, then the other team’s score. (Ex. “3 serving 2”). If the ball hits the net or ceiling on the serve it will be a side-out for the receiving team. Each team may hit the ball a maximum of three times in returning it across the net. The ball is returned back and forth until one team makes an error. Only the serving team can earn a point. If the receiving team commits a fault a point is scored. If the serving team makes an error or commits a fault, side-out is called and the other team serves. The team must rotate clockwise one position before serving. A player may not hit the ball twice in succession. EQUIPMENT: Gator Skin (Specials) Volleyballs, VB Net, VB Courts SUGGESTIONS: 1. Have the students sit in their starting positions. (On the yellow line in front row & red line in back row.) GLOSSARY: Blocking: A defensive player: attempting to block or stop the returning ball over or near the net. Ball: Volleyball (Gator Skip – Special) Nerf Center Court: The line under the net Fault: Is an error in play or failure to return the ball to the other side of the net. Game Point: The last point of the game. Net: Center court, above the centerline separating or between the two teams. Point: Awarded to the serving team for any infringement of the rules by the receiving team or an unreturned shot. Rotation: Shifting position clockwise just before the next person serves. When a team wins the serve, they will rotate one position then serve. Out of Bounce: When the ball lands outside the playing court. (Balls that land on the sideline are in play or not out of bounce). Service: Putting the ball into play by the right back player. Set: A high pass, player uses fingertips with wrist tilted back to set the ball high in the air. Side-out: Ending the team ‘s right to serve because of an infringement of a rule. Violation: Fault or an infringement of a rule. A foul such as a lift double hit or four hits on one side.
