Chemicals Management of
Wastewater
•
Wastewater is the liquid waste generated by the use of water by a household, commercial
entity, trade, factory or industry. This wastewater needs to be treated and disposed of in a
manner that will preserve and protect public health and the environment. The use of
chemicals by the generators of wastewater is becoming a greater concern as many of these
chemicals can have serious short to long term negative impacts on public health, flora and
fauna and the environment in general.
•
Pharmaceuticals used for the treatment of diseases are not all used up by the body and
when excreted are not readily broken down by sewage treatment systems. These then enter
the food chain via bioaccumulation or persist in the environment posing a risk to the health
to both humans and animals. The same is true for the numerous other chemicals that are
used in industry and commercial activities. Poor public and environmental health can have
severe repercussions on a countries social and economic development. As such, there is a
need to address the use and treatment of these chemicals. As a country we need to look at
the implications of poor chemicals management in wastewater not just for our children and
grandchildren, but also for ourselves. As such one will need to look at a policy framework for
the sound management of chemicals for reuse, treatment and disposal.
