Glenbrae Children’s Centre Standards & Quality Report Session 2015 – 2016 Contents Our nursery What is this report about? How successful are we? Our Achievements Promoting Equalities What’s Next? Our Nursery Glenbrae Children’s Centre is situated in the Strone/Maukinhill area of East Greenock. Our main feeder primary schools are King’s Oak and All Saints and we have strong links with these schools at transition time and throughout the year. Places within the nursery are allocated in line with Inverclyde Council’s Admissions policy. We also offer some wrapround places for children whose parents are in employment, education or training. Glenbrae caters for children aged 0 – 12 years. 9 full time equivalent (F.T.E.) places for children aged 0 – 2 years 20 F.T.E. places for children aged 2 – 3 years 30 F.T.E. places for children aged 3 – 5 years 24 places for children aged 5 – 12 years The Nursery is staffed by a Head of Centre, a Depute, a Senior Early Years Education & Childcare Officer, an Early Stages Teacher, 13 Early Years Education & Childcare Officers, 9 full time and 4 job share/part time. We also have 1 Early Years Support Worker, 4 Support Assistants, a Clerical Assistant, a Bus escort/Auxiliary and a Family Support Worker. Within the Out of School Care we have 3 staff. Ancillary staff consist of a Caretaker/Driver, 2 Cleaners, a Cook and a Kitchen Assistant. The centre is recognised as a community resource and offers a variety of services/activities to meet the needs of the community. Centre staff have strong links with a variety of agencies in the community and recognise parents as the prime educators of their child. This philosophy underpins all our work with families and we aim to:- o create an atmosphere where parents feel valued o develop positive meaningful, relationships o provide regular opportunities to discuss children’s progress o inform parents and where appropriate consult them about centre matters o be sensitive and responsive to family needs The parents room is open every day and is used for Nurturing Sessions/Play Sessions; Parents Group and Bookbug sessions. The Family Support Worker supports staff with a variety of home link activities and gives support to vulnerable families within and outwith the Centre. What is this report about? The report is to show the developments being made within the nursery. We use various tools to gather evidence including:Staff/Management meetings Room meetings Working groups Displays of children’s work Consultation and questionnaires with children/parents Children’s Profiles Staff observations National Document ‘Child at the Centre 2’ Inspection reports Quality visits from Education Services and Quality Improvement Officer Priority 1: Staff to gain knowledge of the new Building the Ambition document which will help them to improve the learning environments and outcomes for children. How are we doing? Training has been delivered to staff on section 6 – What do children need? and section 7 – Putting pedagogy into practice. Continuing to work through the document with staff. A ‘Green Week’ was held in the nursery. Children have an ECO song, code & charter. How do we know? An ECO floorbook has lots of photographic evidence of work. Priority 3: Peer Assessment - Staff to assess each other’s practice (peer assessment) which will help to improve outcomes for children. How are we doing? Most staff had the opportunity to carry out a peer assessment visit in another playroom between January & March 2016. How do we know? Our Achievements Parent’s Achievements Eat Better to Feel Better The nursery acheived funding to have a member of staff trained as a community chef and will provide cooking sessions for parents within the centre over a six week block, starting in September. Parents took part in Heart Start Fire Safety Health & Wellbeing Parent Fundraising Having raised funds within the nursery, the parent group decided that rather than keep all of the money raised, they would share it with some charities including The Teapot Trust, The Salvation Army, Reach for Autism and Children in Poverty Inverclyde. Our Achievements We took part in the Science Fayre organised by our local cluster group. We demonstrated how children learn from 3 – 18. Our focus was Space. The local Cluster group of Schools and Nurseries will be showcasing the learning at the Scottish Learning Festival in The SECC in September. Promoting Equalities What have we done in the past year to promote equality? Fair Trade days were held within the nursery where parents were able to gain information & purchase resources.
