NMP Summary Report

FORM #1
NMP Summary Report Instructions
Refer to the NMP Worksheet you have completed and enter figures into the NMP Summary Report (Form #3 & #4)
Online video tutorials are provided on the Coalition’s website at https://www.esjcoalition.org/nmpTraining.asp
1. On Form #3 fill in the Management Unit names for the parcel(s) you are reporting. This can be the actual Assessor
Parcel Number(s) or management unit(s).
NOTE: Include information from each certified NMP Worksheet you completed on a separate line of the NMP
Summary Report (Form #4). Each NMP Worksheet is based on similar crop and nitrogen use rates.
2. Record the Specific Crop from Form 5 for each parcel in the “Specific Crop” column on Form 3. The Specific Crop
List is important to review for farmers with perennial crops. We need to know the age of the crop and the purpose
of the crop as it results in substantial differences in yield.
3. Enter the irrigated acreage for each parcel from box #10 on Form #3.
4. On Form #4 fill in the Crop Year from box #1 and your Member ID from box #2 of the NMP Worksheet (This
information is for Coalition tracking purposes ONLY.)
5. Enter your name and the date that you are filling out your NMP Summary Report in the space for Submittal Date
and Forms Completed By.
6. Record each management unit name from Form #3 in the Management Unit column on Form #4.
7. Sum the total irrigated acreage associated with each Management Unit and record it in the Total Acres column.
8. Record the Specific Crop associated with each Management Unit.
9. On Form #4 in the Total Available N Applied column, add the ACTUAL Total Available N Applied and the N in
Irrigation Water values together (shown in blue below). For A/Y, divide the Total Available N Applied per acre
(calculated above) by the Actual Yield per acre ([box #22 + box #25] ÷ box #11). All calculations are on a per acre
basis.
10. Fill in the production unit (box #7) for the yield Production Unit. Pounds or tons are the preferred production
unit. If you report in units other than pounds or tons please use the Production Units Cheat Sheet to convert your
yield to pounds.

MANAGEMENT UNIT PARCEL INVENTORY
Parcels requiring an NMP Summary Report due to groundwater vulnerability are listed below. If you
returned an NMP Summary Report for 2015, the Management Unit, Specific Crop type and the acreage
will be prepopulated for you. Re-group Management Units, APNs, or parcels as needed. “Management
Unit” is the description or name given to the property listed on the sheet as a group. You can also use
the Assessor Parcel Number (APN) as a descriptor of the Site Location or Management Unit.
(See
Form #2 example sheet.)
If you do not apply nitrogen fertilizer to your fields these forms are still required to be returned. Simply
fill in the crop type, acreage, and on
Form #4 put zero for nitrogen applied. If you are willing to
provide the yield per acre that would be helpful to show how much nitrogen you are removing from the soil.
If APNs are leased by other farmers, it is the sole responsibility of the member to make sure this
information is provided. Please contact Coalition Membership Services (209) 846-6112 to update
contact information for parcels leased to other farmers. Updating this information ensures that the
Coalition receives all the necessary information for all High Vulnerability parcels.
The following information has been pre-populated with information submitted last year regarding the
crops, parcels and acreage farmed. If this information is not the same as the previous year, please
update by crossing out the information and writing in the correct information.

Please note if any management units experienced drought, pest, or salt stress. If fields were not
harvested due to economic stress please indicate here. Any additional information pertaining to the
2016 harvest you think would be helpful please include.

Box number refers to the 4-page nitrogen management plan distributed by ESJWQC (copy for 2016 enclosed).
Reporting Actual Yield is not required; this column was added to assist you with required A/Y calculations.
Gross weight includes all part of the crop that is removed from the field including culls, shells/hulls, etc.

Determining The Amount of Nitrogen in Irrigation Water
Irrigation water can be collected and analyzed for nitrate by a laboratory to determine the amount of
nitrate (NO3) or nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) in water. The concentration of nitrate can then be
extrapolated to determine the pounds of nitrogen per acre foot of water.
How to convert between NO3 and NO3-N:
To convert Nitrate (NO3) to Nitrate-Nitrogen (NO3-N), multiply by 0.2259.
To convert Nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) to Nitrate (NO3), multiply by 4.4268.
How to convert to pounds N per acre foot:
Water Content Of:
PPM NO3
PPM NO3
PPM NO3-N
PPM NO3-N
Multiply By:
0.052
0.62
0.23
2.74
To Determine:
Pounds N/acre inch
Pounds N/acre foot
Pounds N/acre inch
Pounds N/acre foot
*water analyses from most labs report NO3 in units of ppm, but it is very important to pay attention to which units the results
are reported.
How to determine Pounds Nitrogen from Pounds N/acre foot:
Multiply the Pounds N/acre foot (or inches) by the amount of acre/foot (or inches) water applied.
Amount of Nitrogen per Area:
Pounds N/acre inch
Pounds N/acre foot
Multiply By:

Converting Total Applied Fertilizer Amounts
to Pounds of Nitrogen Applied for Common Products
(see your fertilizer manufacturer for exact conversions)
Nitrogen fertilizers have three numbers on the label such as 10-20-10 or 10-10-10 and these numbers
represent the percentage of the three major nutrients, nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (N-P-K).
Below is a table of examples of how to determine the amount of pounds of nitrogen in different
fertilizer products.

The table provides the pounds of nitrogen applied based on the concentration of nitrate-N in irrigation water and the amount of irrigation water
applied. To calculate the pounds of N applied with irrigation water, determine the concentration of nitrate-N in the irrigation water and the
amount of water applied. The number in the table is the pounds of N applied to the field in the irrigation water only.

The fields/parcels have different NMPs due to different crops, amounts of nitrogen applied and/or types of nitrogen
applied. These fields are managed differently.
1. Make copies of page 4 and fill in this information at the top:
2. Assign a name/label to each of your NMP Reports that will be practical for your records. This name/label is
called your NMP Management Unit. Examples include, NMP-Home or NMP-1 [Any name of your choice] that
will help identify which report is being referred to.

NMP Management Unit Parcel Inventory
If there are more than 6 parcels associated with a single NMP you will need to use the following inventory template to
track the parcel information including APN, Field ID, Crop and Acres. The top rows are examples of how to fill out the
inventory. A blank printable copy of this table is available on our website or paper copy available up on request.
