Conscious incompetence - this is when you know that you want to learn how to do something but you are incompetent at doing it. Conscious competence this is when you can achieve this particular task but you are very conscious about everything you do. Unconscious competence - this is when you finally master it and you do not even think about what you have such as when you have learned to ride a bike very successfully" 7/13/2017 Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools “We will lead the nation in improving student achievement.” 5 Rate Yourself… Unconsciously Incompetent I have no idea why the students in my class are not successful. Consciously Incompetent I know how important online learning is, but as an online instructor I am really not yet effective in … If I were able to …. that would greatly improve my instruction. 7/13/2017 Consciously Competent I can effectively teach online because I make sure that I remind myself to follow the best practices I learned when I was oriented to teaching online. I don’t need assistance with my courses. I can demonstrate to others what I do during the course of a semester. Unconsciously Competent Online teaching is 'second nature‘ for me I can monitor my online course while I am watching television I think I am a great online instructor, but I am not sure why. As I travel to other countries and visit with their ministries of education, I am deeply concerned about the United States falling behind in our approach to education. Other countries are centering their educational strategies on expanding access using e-learning. What’s more, countries from Singapore to Mexico are training every K–12 teacher how to teach online, as a way to give them the needed experience in effective use of educational technology in face-to-face environments and to prepare them to teach virtually. China is digitizing its entire curriculum and Mexico already did, five years ago, in its Enciclomedia project. Singapore has 100 percent of secondary schools using online learning. And as part of its pandemic preparedness program, Singapore goes so far as to hold “E-learning Week,” where school closes down for an entire week; this ensures every teacher knows how to continue teaching online and every student knows how to utilize online learning. Online Instructors Become unconsciously-consciously competent – a master of your craft Recognition of “additional expertise” Participate in a network of online instructors and educational technologists 7/13/2017 Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools “We will lead the nation in improving student achievement.” 9 How Can the Online Endorsement Benefit Me? Brick and Mortar Instructors Research shows that the skills learned by online instructors transfer back to the face-to-face classroom in a very powerful and productive way. 7/13/2017 Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools “We will lead the nation in improving student achievement.” 10 How Can the Online Endorsement Benefit Me? Practices that translate to the face-to-face classroom (just to name a few)… Developing/Using Rubrics Developing/Using Authentic Assessments and Performance Tasks Utilizing Backward Design Incorporating Multimedia Assignments/Using Multimedia in Delivery of Instruction Differentiating Instruction (formative assessment, learning profiles, etc.) Including Peer Assessment/Collaboration (intra-school and inter-school) Including Student Reflection/Journaling Including Better Quality Feedback to Students (Explicit, Aligned to Standards) 7/13/2017 Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools “We will lead the nation in improving student achievement.” 11 How Can the Online Endorsement Benefit Me? Educational Leaders (Administrative, Media, Technology) Demonstrate more skilled instructional leadership “By 2019 about 50 percent of high school courses will be delivered online.” (Christensen) 7/13/2017 Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools “We will lead the nation in improving student achievement.” 12 Online Teaching Facilitates Tiered Interventions for Student Learning Online learning provides differentiated instruction using online tools and resources that support collaborative student-centered learning. Online thinking tools are active learning places where students engage in robust discussions, pursue investigations, analyze complex information, and solve problems. Tier 1 STANDARDS-BASED CLASSROOM LEARNING: All students participate in general education learning that includes: •Implementation of the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) through research-based practices •Use of differentiation of instruction such as flexible grouping, varied instructional strategies •Monitoring progress of learning through multiple formative assessments and analysis of student work Georgia Department of Education Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools February 5, 2008 All Rights Reserved More Information Please visit the Pioneer RESA ETC web site at http://www.pioneerresa.org/ETC/endorsement.html to learn more about the Online Teaching Endorsement Kathy Cox, State Superintendent of Schools “We will lead the nation in improving student achievement.” 15
