“Irish construction industry output to
be 42% higher in 2016 than in 2012,
according to the Society of Chartered
Surveyors. Construction skills are
once again in demand as the supply of
quantity surveyors, project managers
and senior engineers tightens.”
Project management skills and relevant
certification
Mechanical, electrical building services
and structural design skills
Site professionals who are aware of
recent changes in the building codes
Salaries in 2016
Salaries for all construction positions
should rise, although some at a moderate
rate. Quantity surveyors and design
engineers with 4-5 years’ experience are
likely to see pronounced rises due to
demand and supply at this level.
Top Tips For 2016
For junior engineers, excellent MS Excel, MS Project and
Primavera skills are all seen as very relevant whether you
are looking at project management, planning or quantity
surveying. Also companies increasingly appreciate candidates
who understand programmes, commercial aspects and how
projects fit together in a practical way.
For graduates or ex-tradespeople looking to become more
involved in engineering/project management, pursue third
level education to the highest level to give yourself more
options (i.e. a level 8 engineering degree will give more
options than an ordinary degree/diploma). Most contractors
who are now hiring express a preference for degree level.

Thoughts on the Market
2016
At present, the construction market looks in an
increasingly healthy state compared to the significant
fall off in activity at the end of the last decade. There
is an increased level of activity in both the commercial
and residential building sectors, with both larger and
medium sized companies benefiting. We are seeing
both design and site professionals in demand and the
increased level of jobs has also had a positive effect
on opportunities for tradespeople such as carpenters
and electricians. The upsurge in activity has meant
that contracting and consulting companies are facing
challenges however in attracting staff in certain areas,
particularly intermediate (3-5 years’ experience) level
engineers and surveyors, as many in this bracket
relocated to the UK or further afield in countries such
as Australia.
CONSTRUCTION SERVICES
Architectural Technician
Certainly more jobseekers who emigrated are starting
to look at Ireland closely again, and Sigmar were able to
successfully place several candidates relocating back
to Ireland in 2015. However despite salary increases
in Ireland, salary levels in the UK plus exchange rate
differentials provide significant competition.
