WELCOME TO STOKE
Today we welcome players, management and supporters of Stoke for our second home league
game of the 15/16 season. Stoke have started the season with a first week loss away at Dudley
Kingswingford, 17-31, followed by a win at home last week, 27-20 against Hereford. A good
pointer to this afternoon’s game was their pre season Staffordshire Cup fixture with Leek which
ended 22 all (with two tries for Will Sant) with Stoke progressing to the next round as the away
team. Notably Stoke seemed to dominate Leek in the scrum.
Last season each team won their home game with Kenilworth winning 27-16 early in the season
and Stoke winning 10-3 in the Christmas fixture. This latter game was notable for the two sets of
brothers who played for Kenilworth that day, Josh (on debut) and Harry O’Brien and Rhys and
Tommy Jones (also on debut). Our other debutants that day, in a very young team, were James
Nichol and Hector Smith. In the end Stoke finished last season in 6th spot (to our 9th) with fourteen
wins and fifteen bonus points.
MIDLANDS 1 west
This season we have lost local sides Berkswell & Balsall, Earlsdon and Barkers Butts and this will
mean a few extra miles on the clock to places such as Burton, Dudley K, Bournville and Bridgnorth
although we should not complain about the latter as they have a delightful clubhouse in downtown
Bridgnorth that doubles as a pub!
There are four teams with two wins to date, ourselves, Stratford, Burton and Bridgnorth with
Stratford and ourselves in first and second spots, courtesy of two bonus point wins. Still without a
win are Hereford, Walsall, Whitchurch and Leek, with Leek at the foot of the table.

LAST FEW WEEKS
It has been a rather good opening to the season with two wins against decent opposition, 25-6 over
Leek and 30-23 away at Silhillians. Captain James Wadey scored two against Leek with Joe Jepps
and Gaz Renowden also scoring. Against Silhillians it was Bobby Thompson who stole the show
with three tries with Hector Smith (his first) and Josh Hickman also adding tries. A very annoyed
chap at Silhillians was Hector’s dad, Alistair, who missed his try! (but has managed to obtain a
copy of the video). It is worth praising at this stage the guys who turned out last week – truly
superb and thanks to Sean, Jai, Jimmy, Joe, Hector & Marcus for stepping in late, and superbly too!
However, where were the guys from the previous week?
The Colts had their first game last weekend losing 0-38 to Leicester Forest.
The Cavaliers have been out both weeks losing, 14-45, to Ampthill 4th’s and defeating Old
Leamingtonians 2’s 43-5. The threes lost first time out to Rugby Welsh first XV and last week,
combining with Old Coventrians 3’s, they lost to Leamington 2’s.
WARWICKSHIRE SECOND XV CUP
Our second XV have been drawn against Berkswell and Balsall in the 2nd XV cup, preliminary
Round, at home on the 27th September 2015. The winners will play Shipston, also at home, in the
first round proper on the 1st November 2015.
KENILWORTH LADIES GEAR UP FOR FIRST EVER MATCH
It was only 10 weeks ago since Kenilworth Rugby Club opened its doors to a new women’s team
and the team have now got 30 players on its books. Training and participation numbers have been
very impressive and the club has been greatly overwhelmed by the reception which the section has
received in recent weeks.
Over the last few weeks, Community Rugby Coach Dave Lote has ran guest sessions with the
Ladies and he was in awe of what had been accomplished in a short space of time. Dave said ‘I
can’t believe that it has only been a few weeks, but you have already created a strong team with
lots of drive and enthusiasm; credit to the coach and all involved in making this happen’. Over the
next few weeks, Head Coach Tim Burden will now focus on putting all that the squad have learned
over the summer in preparation for the first game on September 27th against Handsworth (12.45).
Skipper Sarah Munday seems very confident that the team are going into the first game in top form,
‘we are excited about the prospects of running out unto the pitch for the first time, the Ladies are
confident and ready for the challenges ahead and there is no doubt that we will come out on top’
Munday said. Would you like to give it a go or do you know someone who would? Training takes
place at Kenilworth RFC Training Grounds, The Cowpatch, Glasshouse Lane, CV8 2AL (next to
the Wardens Cricket Club), every Wednesday from 7pm. For further information, email

MORE NEW FACES
Joss Selby has been busy with his registration forms echoing the success of our recruitment policy.
He has signed four more players, all of first XV potential.
Sam White, a 26 yr old back whose most recent club was Rugby St Andrews. Sam has also played
for Old Laurentian.
Harry Kaufman, a 23 yr old centre who has been playing Rugby League with Oxford and who
started his league career at Coventry University. Harry is a Civil Engineer and he made an
impressive debut for the Cavs last week.
Ryan Stephenson, a 32 yr old hooker/centre who has signed from Dorset Dockers. Ryan is a
Chiropractor at Kenilworth Chiropractic Clinic.
Rob Gardner, our 22 yr old ex Colts hooker who has recently been playing at Barking.
On the debit side we have lost Freddie Mills to Broadstreet and for some reason Dale Glover has
signed for Leamington – if anyone knows why then let us know!
