To: Randolph Student Government From: Senior SGO Members Date: 2/3/2012 Subject: Senior Lounge Purpose: To formally request a designated lounge for the senior class The Problem with the Current System At the moment, seniors lack an area where they could freely go and work on things such as college applications and homework for their advanced courses. Seniors who have shortened schedules have nowhere to go before afterschool activities and may result to wandering hallways. These seniors don’t necessarily want to go outside and would rather use their time efficiently with peers who are able to assist them. Seniors also want an alternative to going outside for lunch as it may not be feasible for them to do so every day. A Solution to the Problem A senior lounge would be a place where the graduating class could focus on college applications, passing classes, and fulfilling all of the requirements necessary for a successful senior year. It would create a communal area where seniors could continue building a network that will thrive beyond high school. The lounge will also provide an opportunity for the seniors to interact with one another and unwind from the stresses of senior year. It would add yet another incentive for underclassmen to make it through to graduation. a. Pre-requisites for entry 1. Seniors must have passed all of their 1st semester classes. They must qualify for senior activities and be eligible for going outside for lunch. 2. They must sign an agreement promising to abide by rules and an Honor Code. b. Furnishing 1. The cafeteria space adjacent to the student’s cafeteria. 2. With Mr. Dermott’s assistance, we can pick out furniture. Fundraising can help pay for necessary items but we accept the constraints and will make the most of what we have. 3. Randolph’s Art crew can paint a mural. 4. A central board in the lounge can keep seniors up to date with spirit days, monetary dues, application deadlines etc. 5. Lockers can be placed inside the lounge and can be used whenever seniors are free. This is important for seniors who start at later periods. 6. At least 1 computer and access to a printer. A couple of textbooks to work on homework. c. Supervision 1. A member of the support staff can routinely supervise seniors in the lounge. d. Food 1. Seniors should be able to take their school lunches to the lounge or return from outside to eat in a safe location. Proposed Floor Plan Conclusion Completing all aspects of the lounge can be done gradually. However, it is important that we at least consider opening up the space as soon as possible to allow the 2012 cohort to enjoy these benefits for their last few months. We acknowledge that it is a tremendous privilege and would be forever grateful if we were to at the very least have a place to call our own. It would affirm to us that A. Philip Randolph is now a place where the student can have a voice. Omar Pineda (President) Edgar Rivera (Vice President)
