2008-2009 NEWMAC Coaches' Post Season Proposals
Grouped by Sport
Voting Results
Cross Country
Motion #1: Postseason meeting to take place as a conference call every other year.
Passed: 10-0-1
Rationale:
 The cross country season does not end after the conference championship. The NCAA Regional occurs in
two weeks and the track season has already begun, which makes it tough for the coaches to make the
meeting. They either end practice early or cancel practice to attend.
 Voting for both Coach of the Year and the Sportsmanship Award can take place online.
 Due to the part-time status of coaches, the meeting must take place in the evening, which takes coaches
away from personal responsibilities.
 The coaches interact on a weekly basis at various meets. If there are issues, they bring them up on race
day.
Defeated: 2-8
Rationale: Value of in-person meetings
Field Hockey
Motion #1: Highest seed retains host of semi-final and final games at the regularly scheduled times on an alternate site
if regular season home field unavailable.
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: Reward for being highest seed.
Motion to Refer to Championship
Passed: 10-0
Points of Consideration: Is it critical on a college campus rather than a high school; member institution vs. another
member institution campus
This addresses time being sacred-is it?
Motion #2: If alternate site not available for both semifinal games at regular time, the second semifinal will be played
at 2nd seed. Championship will remain at highest seed.
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: To retain the regular championship game time schedule.
Motion to Refer to Championships Committee
Passed: 10-0
Points to consider: Is it critical on a college campus rather than a high school; member institution vs. another
member institution campus; This addresses time being sacred-is it?
Motion #3: Coaches would like to investigate changing post season schedule to a Saturday, Friday Saturday schedule
to allow more flexibility for field use and weather conditions.
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: This allows Sunday as a backup day in the event of a rain out on Friday or Saturday.

Motion #4: Coaches also ask that event managers be more visible and proactive with crowd control at games; they
should be available to officials before the start of the game and be available during the game for officials to request
crowd control/ ejections.
Withdrawn but discussed and emphasized
Motion #5:
NEWMAC Tournament contests should take precedence over regular season NEWMAC contests. If multiple
NEWMAC contests are played on the same day, the team traveling to the NEWMAC championship tournament
would get choice of established tournament game times the following game times: 11:00am or 2:30pm (1:00pm or
4:30pm with lights). Any change to the established game times must be agreed upon by both institutions
MOOT
Men’s Soccer
Motion #1: The goalkeeper receiving the highest number of votes will be on the First Team and the second highest
vote getter would be on the second team. Any goalkeeper nominated is also eligible for Player of the Year.
Passed: 7-0
Rationale: The rationale was to have only GK representing the first and second team. That would be in line with how
the game in played in terms of 10 field positions and one GK. The player of the year voting takes place first so if a GK
were to be the player of the year he would be also on the All Conference first team.
MOOT
Motion #2: Teams will follow the NCAA pre-game protocol for the NEWMAC semi-finals.
Passed: 7-0
Rationale: We are looking to follow NCAA protocol just we do during the regular season. With a double header for the
NEWMAC tournament all participants of the first game are to have left the bench area before the 40 minute clock
begins.
Passed: 10-0
Women’s Soccer
Motion #1: Coaches moved to follow the listed procedures for selecting two goalkeepers (top vote-getter to first team,
second leading vote-getter to second team) and then to add the remaining keepers to the All-Conference ballot. This
would allow more than two goalkeepers to be named to the All-Conference team. The motion also included a
stipulation that any remaining keepers that are voted All-Conference MUST be placed on the second team, so as not to
place a third goalie above the second-highest vote-getter from the previous vote (who is automatically on the second
team).
Passed: 10-0
MOOT
Motion #2: Remove winning percentage column from the conference standings as they appear on the conference
website. Remove points from entire season column
Action – conference office will request this of Presto for men’s and women’s soccer
Motion #3: All NEWMAC Tournament officials should be assigned by Roger Taylor.
Passed: 10-0
Defeated: 5-5
Rationale: No institution uses Roger Taylor currently for women’s soccer

Defeated: 0-10-0
Rationale: Administrative/Staff issue – work/life balance; additional cost (dinners rather than lunch)
Women’s Tennis
Motion #1: The tennis ball for the NEWMAC championship should be the ITA recommended ball
Passed: 8-0
Rationale: That is what most teams play with during the regular season.
Passed: 9-0-1
Motion #2: The tennis liaison will poll the tennis coaches in January or February to see if there are any additional
recommendations they would like to put forward for consideration by the AAG, due to decisions made during the
convention.
Passed: 8-0
Rationale: The ITA Convention is in December. Sometimes decisions are made at that convention that would impact
play for the next year.
Withdrawn
Motion #3: Everyone agreed that it would be helpful if we could eliminate at least one of the Tuesday matches. The
group proposes that the matches scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13 th be moved to Saturday, Sept. 5th.
Passed: 6-1-1
Rationale: Tuesday matches present a problem for teams
Defeated: 0-8-2
Rationale: Starts season too early
Volleyball
Motion #1: That an official scorer be hired as a part of the officiating crew for all rounds of the championship.
Passed: 10-0
Defeated: 2-8-0
Rationale: Additional, unnecessary cost
Motion #2: That the tie breaking procedures be broken down more to make them more understandable.
Passed: 10-0
Withdrawn by liaison-more clarity needed
Men’s Basketball
Motion #1: Proposed a Wednesday/Friday/Sunday at highest seeds (two semi final sites).
Passed: 7-0
Rationale: Best format from a coaching/playing perspective with a day of preparation and a day of rest in the interest
of student-athlete welfare. Limited, if any (?), missed class time with single Friday evening contest.
MOOT
Motion #2: Proposed a Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at highest seeds (two semi final sites).
Passed: 5-2
Rationale: Best format from a coaching/playing perspective with a day of preparation and a day of rest in the interest
of student-athlete welfare. Limited missed class time with Thursday evening contest.

MOOT
Motion #3: Proposed the same alternating format (from one year ago that was referred to the Championship
Committee) with WBB in that in one year one gender would host the tournament on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and
the other gender on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday.
Passed: 7-0
Rationale: Alleviate the facility pressure of a 4-contest day and at least for one gender each year would allow for a
‘rescheduled’ date (Sunday) to complete the tourney due to inclement weather including the sentiment that the
positive result of having more than one men’s team in NCAA tournament in recent years would not have occurred
had the tourney not been played to completion.
MOOT
Swimming and Diving
Motion #1: To hold the coaches meeting 1 hour prior to the start of the meet.
Passed: 10-0
Passed: 10-0
Motion #2: Reinstate institutional control/choice to stay overnight the Thursday prior to the start of the meet.
Passed: 10-0
Rationale:
 Student-Athlete well being
 NEWMAC Core Values
 NEWMAC Mission Statement
MOOT
Motion #3: 11:00 am start time for all preliminary sessions of the NEWMAC Championship starting in 2010.
Passed: 10-0
Rationale:
 Based on outcome of previous motion.
 Allows for consistent championship timeline.
MOOT
Motion #4: NEWMAC Senior Award; Awarded to the senior (swimmer and diver) who accumulates the most points
over career at NEWMACs in individual events.
Passed: 10-0
Rationale:
 Rewards significant contributions at the NEWMAC Championship
 Paper Certificate Award/Website
Defeated: 0-10
Rationale: Consistency with other NEWMAC sports
Softball
Motion #1: The higher seed would be designated the Home team throughout the tournament: including the if game.
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: see motion #2 rationale
Passed: 8-2
Motion #2: The higher seed will have choice of dugout and uniform for each game. Exception would be if the highest
remaining seed cannot host tournament then the Host Institute would retain home dug out.
Passed: 9-0

Page: 5
Rationale: rewarding the regular season champion. This is clear to umpires, teams and host institutions prior to
tournament. Discussion: Rain outs during Tournament week. Stay with current policy in handbook. First round rain
out coaches stated that all Teams want to play games if possible.
Passed: 9-1
Motion #3: If Tournament First Round games are moved to next day due to inclement weather then the next step
should be: If the Highest seed’s facility is not playable the next day, the games would move to the next highest seed
site.
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: to make all things equal they would prefer no games be played if all three teams cannot get to the location.
Motion to refer to softball coaches for further clarification
Passed: 10-0
Motion #4: Tie breaking procedures for teams in tournament. Next step after Head-to-head competition results. *
a. Records among teams that are tied.
b. Use a comparison against a ranked order, beginning with the top seed until the tie is
broken.
…..should be
 Results common opponents in region games played in region
 Results common opponents in region games played out of region
 Results of Common opponents non region games played
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: see motion #5 rationale
Passed: 9-1-0
Note: In-region as defined by NCAA
Motion #5: For the bottom teams if in tie breaking procedure the next step would be a Play in game not Flip of Coin.
This will be played no later than last available date of regular season. Home/Away will be determined by coin toss.
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: Coaches would like to make every effort to have seeding decided on the field. In region needs to be
separated because of spring trips schedules are not controlled.
Defeated: 0-10
Rationale: Cost concerns, logistical challenges; we do not do this for other sports
Motion #6: Games 3 and 4 will be played no more than 30 minutes after the completion of the first games.
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: chance of not getting games in.
Change from 5pm game time.
Passed: 10-0
Motion #7: Regular Season: Add to the Halted Game Procedure NCAA rule 6.2.2 which states
“The Score of a regulation tie game shall be the tie score when the game was terminated.”
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: This would clear up the tie game situation
Passed: 10-0
Motion #8: Regular Season: All weekday games start time should be no later than 3pm.
Passed: 9-0
Rationale: Five games got suspended this season. Teams do not have to get out any earlier from class because teams
would skip or announce lines ups during warm ups.
Coaches felt the cost of suspended games was an issue.

Passed: 10-0
Motion #9: Change Coach of the year Award to Coaching Staff of the Year.
Passed: 9-0
Coaches felt staff should be rewarded along with head coach
Motion: Refer to Awards Committee
Passed: 6-4
Women’s Lacrosse
Motion #1: Coaches recommend that all NEWMAC institutions that sponsor the sport of Women’s Lacrosse review
and train statisticians by utilizing the IWLCA Manual. Game stats to be tracked would include: Goals, assists, ground
balls, draw control, caused turnovers, turnovers, fouls, free position, shots, clears, minutes played, games started,
games played.
Passed: 7-0-0
Rationale: The list of statistics outlined in the IWLCA Manual is a standard list of statistical information that is
routinely used for All Conference and All American selection.
MOOT (voted on SID motion)
Motion #2: Coaches recommended that the new 5 team conference tournament format include a single play in game on
Wednesday #4 seed vs. #5 seed with the #4 seed hosting. Semi-final and championship games should be played on the
following Saturday and Sunday with the #1 seed hosting both days regardless of win/loss outcomes in semi-finals.
Passed: 7-0-0
Rationale: This format emphasizes importance of regular season conference play, rewards #1 seeded team, creates a
championship atmosphere and allows the host institution appropriate time to plan and execute the event.
MOOT
Men’s Tennis
Motion #1: Coaches recommend the semifinals be scheduled for Thursday and the final be scheduled on Saturday. The
location for the semifinals would be at the highest seeds and the final would be hosted at the highest remaining seed.
Passed: 6-0
Rationale:
 Separate semis and final so student-athletes are not playing for 6-7 hours of tennis on one day
 Creates more of a tournament feel for student-athletes as two teams will be playing at home on Thursday,
and one team will be playing at home on Saturday
 Having a Thursday/Saturday format allows administrators ample time to make transportation
arrangements
 Friday could be a rain date if needed
MOOT
In the event this does not pass, the group recommended the next proposal:
Motion #1b
Coaches recommended the semifinals be scheduled for Saturday and the final be scheduled for Sunday. The highest
seeds would host semi-finals, and the final would be hosted at the highest seed on Sunday.
Passed: 4-1-1
Rationale:
 Separate semis and final so student-athletes are not playing for 6-7 hours of tennis on one day
 No missed class time
 Allows for ample preparation of the championship host

Motion #1: Conduct the post season meeting as a conference call.
Passed: 6-3-0
Rationale: To save travel expenses
Defeated: 2-8
Rationale: Value of in-person meetings
Motion #2: Allow more than 4 participants in each event from an individual institution if that institution has more than
4 athletes who have qualified for DIII NE championship in that event.
Passed: 5-3-1
Rationale: Student-athletes are being excluded from the NEWMAC meet in events where they are highly competitive.
In most instances, these student-athletes have traveled to the meet anyway, so there is minimal, if any, additional
expense.
Defeated: 4-4-2
Rationale: Favors deeper teams
Motion #3: Use Direct Athletics for entries and results/performance lists updates for all NEWMAC Championship
meets.
Passed: 9-0-0
Rationale: Direct Athletics has become the universal standard in the region and will rank our athletes regionally if we
use them for entries. Currently used by NESCA, MASCAC and the IVY League among others. The charge is $.25 per
entry and they will work with all of our timing companies. (2009 Championship charge $.10 per entry at
www.onlineentries.com with no regional performance list update)
Passed: 9-0-1
Baseball
Motion #1: During the NEWMAC Baseball Championship Tournament, except the championship game, change the
procedure for determining Home and Away from a coin flip (NCAA) to the highest seed in each game will be the
home team.
Passed: 7-0
Rationale:
-Coaches did not feel that operating procedure was necessary for the NEWMAC tournament.
-Takes away the advantage of being a higher seed that was earned during the regular season.
Passed: 8-0-2
Motion #2: Push the 2010 NEWMC Baseball Championship Tournament back one week from its current date.
Passed: 7-0
Rationale:
-The 2010 NEWMAC Baseball Tournament is scheduled to occur one month prior to the NCAA tournament (5/20/10).
NEWMAC’s have consistently been no more than three weeks prior to the NCAA’s. Coaches are concerned about the
length of time between these two tournaments.
Passed: 8-0-2
Motion #3: Coaches recommend moving to a three game series for regular season NEWMAC contests. See
attachment.
Passed: 7-0
Rationale:
-Expanding regular season is consistent with goal of placing more emphasis
on conference play.
-Reduce tie-breakers
-The coaches agreed that they could accomplish this format by
using three Tuesdays and six Friday/Saturdays. Propose to alternate

Home and Away every other year and rotate teams every two years.
Passed: 5-3-2
Effective 2011
Motion: Spring scheduling committee to look at spring schedule to see if it will fit with all principles to see if it
will work to move the first week of NEWMAC competitions to weekend of April 24th for baseball.
Passed: 10-0
Motion #4: Utilize a #4 seed vs. #5 seed play-in game and a four team double elimination tournament for the
NEWMAC Baseball Championship Tournament for the 2010 season.
Passed: 7-0
Rationale:
-With the new bracket sizes for Championships beginning next
year the coaches felt having a #4 vs. #5 play-in game was fair.
Passed: 9-1-0
Motion #5: Coaches recommend the #4 vs. #5 play-in game be played on Wednesday and the four team double
elimination tournament be played on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at one site. Friday’s 1 and 2 seed, Saturday 3
games at #1 seed, Sunday at #1 seed.
Passed: 7-0
Rationale:
-No need to use Wednesday with new format.
-Games times for the first day of double elimination could be 9:00am,
12:30pm and 4:00pm.
Passed: 10-0
Motion: For 2011 forward, baseball move to a 4 team double elimination tournament (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).
Passed: 10-0
