Language GAMES

COMENIUS
Language GAMES
Thematic area, sector: Education
Duration: 01.08.2008. – 31.07.2010.
The aim of the project is to broaden students’ horizon in intercultural dialogue, founding opportunity for students’ initiative
and creative language learning as well as practical teaching using the method of learning together and from each other.
Leading motto of the project is GAME:
1) Language games for learning conversational skills. German and Latvian students developed interactive language teaching
materials,
2) Creative games - developing them the project members learned practical woodworking skills using two methods – manual
and technologies.
Teaching Latvian was assigned to students and to create the 10-day teaching set each student chose one topic, worked out
lexical and grammar exercises in order to teach this topic to new friend in an attractive way using songs and games.
Practical part of the project was based on developing creative games. In mixed groups students designed blueprints and made
educational board games which were later presented to five Talsi nursery schools and the the Centre for Women and children in
crises.
Next stage of the Project took place in Germany where the students learned about the advanced technologies in woodprocessing plants „Schiffler”, „MAGE”. They discovered much new in German culture and traditions as well as in social daily life.
Among the project activities there was a meeting with the Mayor of Falkenberg, a trip to Sprehwald organised by Herzberg Rotary
club, raft building and testing down the river Elster, learning German. Creative ideas the students outlined on paper, then made
them in wood, developing a new game that was named “Rip – rip” and it was given to junior students in Falkenberg.
The new game gave rise to interest also back home and many wanted to purchase it therefore we started to produce it in
the program Junior Achievement Latvia. Students’ training company “Wood Games” offered the game „Rip-rip” in the market
receiving nomination „Innovative Product” more than just once. As a reward the students’ company was invited to take part in the
first annual fair „Made in Latvia”. So the product created during the project COMENIUS stood next to well known Latvian
trademarks.
The products of the project are:
 Interactive Latvian learning programme „Latvian in 10 days”
 Creative team forming and cooperation stimulating game „Rip-rip”.
