Monitoring of teaching and learning
throughout the school in order to
ensure good quality teaching

Monitoring of teaching has continued with a focus on KS1 and
writing. The English and Maths subject leaders also monitored
teaching in KS1 and KS1 teachers observed Y3 lessons too.
The school liased with Amanda Evans, Headteacher at
Inglewood who advised KS1 teachers on the teaching of
writing. Sarah Barratt visited Inglewood Infants to see the
teaching of Read, Write Inc
The Curriculum
Staff (including Head) to receive training for
implementation of new curriculum in readiness
for 2014.
Following training for the Maths, English and ICT subject
leaders and Headteacher, changes were made to the
curriculum.
It is envisaged that the Junior and Infant
Curriculum will need adapting and freshening up
and will be a major part of school improvement
towards the end of 2013-14
In Maths, the teachers have adapted to the changes and the
Abacus Evolve Scheme has also changed accordingly.
In English, a new and updated scheme ‘Wordsmith’ has been
purchased to ensure coverage.
In ICT, Mrs Vickers has joined with the Carlisle computing
hub receiving up to date training.
For topics, the teachers and Headteacher re-organised and
changed the topics taught giving the curriculum a fresher feel.
New EYFS Area
To make the most of the outdoor areas at the front
and the rear of school. Possibly look to new
storage of outdoor equipment and movement of
the pirate ship.
It was the first year that Reception had had their own
classroom and their own teacher (Mrs Graham). She worked
closely with the LA EYFS team in order to profile the children
accurately.
New equipment was bought for the EYFS including a Little
Tykes House, Sandpit, Guttering and new signage.
An I-Pad Mini was purchased was purchased to enable
accurate profiling using 2Simple Profiling
Results overall were a significant improvement on 2012-13.
LITERACY
Investigate ways of improving
writing at KS1 in order to try and
get pupils to reach L3.
DAC to broker English consultant to work with

As previously mentioned, Amanda Evans worked with the
KS1 teachers, new methods were introduced and monitoring
by the Subject Leader and Headteacher increased.

The school achieved its best results in writing at KS1 for over
a decade with 11% L3. Reading was also above the Cumbrian
Average (100% L2+). At KS2, Reading results were excellent
(92% L4+). Writing was above the Cumbrian Average with
39% at L5+ but slightly below at L4+. SPAG results were
considerably lower than the Cumbrian Average with 62%
achieving L4+. 92% of children made 2 levels progress in
reading with 85% of children making 2 levels progress in
writing.
MATHS
Introduce Abacus Evolve to KS1
and EYFS
Ensure that new materials are ready, resources
made and teaching is effective.
Abacus was introduced to KS1 and the teachers have adapted
it to suit the needs of the children. In Maths, KS1 results
improved with 22% achieving L3 and 100% achieving L2+. At
KS2, the school achieved 62% at L4+. 62% of children made
2 levels progress.
Happy Puzzle Company /Maths RI or/and inschool Mathletics event
Partly due to Maternity leave and NQT teaching, this didn’t
happen.

A dedicated role play area has been established in the Infant
classroom. The room has been refurbished which has created
more space. The outdoor area at the front of school needs
improving and using in 2014.

New Maths groups were set up with children being taught by
ability rather than by age. As mentioned earlier, Maths results
improved in 2014.

The quantity of Phonics teaching increased. Results continued
to improve with 55% achieving the required standard. The
average score for the Y1 was 33.4 out of 40 , an increase from
26.7 in 2012 and 23.1 in 2011.
Time was allocated for the KS1 teachers to plan together.
They met fortnightly and now have a greater understanding of
what each other are doing and have planned more effectively.
ICT
Raise the achievement of pupils by:
BUILDINGS AND

Reviewing techniques used for assessment and
involve pupils so they are aware of targets set.
Children complete their own record sheets and also get the
opportunity to review their own work
Continue to look for opportunities to work with
secondary schools and outside agencies
Purchase topic related software for EYFS role
play area
All the children in the Juniors worked with Creative Futures
on an animation project in the Spring Term. Les Cooper, ICT
Technician worked with children in Y5/6 at Lego Robots.
Big Tracks were purchased for children lower down the school
to improve programming and Espresso coding was trialed.
Provide laptops/tablets for KS1 children
20 tablets were purchased during the summer of 2014.
To refurbish the library
The library was refurbished in )ctober 2013 and new furniture
bought. As well as providing non-fiction and fiction books for
children to read and research from. It has also provided Mrs
Scott, learning support teacher, with a better room to work in.
Paint the exterior of the school
Replace old curtains with blinds in hall and Infant
Classroom
The exterior of the school was painted in August 2014 and
fascia boards were repaired.
Blinds were fitted throughout the school in December 2013.
To construct a shed for gardening equipment
The shed was not constructed, although shelving has been
purchased for the container which has helped with storage.
In addition to the above, the school has had a new boiler and a
new water heater fitted, the staffroom has been refurbished and
the Infant classroom has had a new carpet, new radiators and
been decorated.
GOVERNANCE

The Governing Body have been kept well informed about all
areas of school improvement and as a result have been able to
monitor the school’s performance more rigorously.

ADMINISTRATION

managing the school’s finances easier.
This did not happen but becomes a greater priority for 2014
due to time lost by Admin/Head as a result of delays/errors by
the LA.

A new website was purchased in December 2013. It was up
and running in the New Year and is updated with photos,
newsletters and information as well as all the necessary
requirements for a school website.

Mrs Scott has had a regular timetable for learning support

her Maths Recovery training during 2014.
